You have have been tasked by your company:
You have one week to come up with a practical Gun Sword to pitch to the DoD or you will lose your job
go
Bring back the M1897 with fancier, killier sword bayonets.
Boom, done.

A semi-auto 556 rifle that is pointy
I resign.

I'd probably spend the week writing my CV and a presentation to go with it.
Before the pitch I'd hand out my CV, then I'd present my resume to the DoD reps that showed up, and I'd finish by explaining what I was tasked to do that week.

This is a ff7 thread?
I'd just ripoff Square and give them Seifers gunblade.

I dust up my resume and schedule some interveiws. when my deadline is up I sue them for asking for the impossible.
i doubt Boeing or GE gives their designers an ultimatum to make Jetsons cars or Cold Fusion in a week or be fired.

Redo my resume and jump ship, if this is the direction where I work for is going then I won't have a job with them for much longer anyway.

boarding cutlass style weapon with a 9mm pistol in the hilt, shoot guys then hack them to make sure.
weapon is to be given as a sidearm for naval boarding parties and as shipboard weapon to put down mutinies.
its a fucking stupid design, but then its a fucking stupid brief
Lets just sauter a knife blade on the barrel of an m16 and reduce the quad rail to only be like 9 inches.
So basically just permanently affix a bayonet but longer?
1. Take your average AR or AK or whatever you prefer
2. Add the smallest and lightest possible blade that counts for their requirements
3. Use it exactly like a normal gun
Sounds practical as fuck to me.

I would attach a large bayonet-sword to the underside of a traditional assault rifle; something that could be used for slicing and stabbing. It would make the gun significantly heavier, sure, but it would essentially turn the thing into a broadsword.
