The preferred handgun of Mossad Assassins and Israeli Sky Marshals.

To import these handguns into the USA Century Arms needed to pin and weld a fake can on the barrel essentially making the handgun pretty useless other than for novelty.

Under the Gun Control Act of 1968, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), Treasury`s agency with regulatory authority over firearm issues, adopted "Factoring Criteria" to be used to determine whether a given handgun is eligible for importation under 925(d)(3). Under the criteria, a handgun must meet certain "prerequisites" and achieve a sufficient number of points under a "point system" which awards points based upon a handgun`s overall length and height (pistols) or frame length and barrel length (revolvers), weight, caliber, frame construction, safety-related features, and miscellaneous equipment such as target sights and grips.

5,000 of these handguns were imported from Israel a few years ago and have been slowly selling for the 250-300 dollar area depending on vendor and condition.
I decided to take a few pictures of my personal fake barrel extension removal process for your enjoyment.
The supply of these fine Beretta handguns will run out in a few months since century arms has sold the last batch to distributors. If you are on the edge of purchasing one I would advise you to purchase one now before they fall back into the collectors market.

First you have to disassemble the handgun. I covered up the barrel landslide so the Finish doesn't get marred.

now one must identify where the fake can was pinned and welded, the Finish should look different where the pin is located and should be fairly easy to spot near the threads.

What purpose did the fake can have to get around the import rules? Just made it longer and that was ok?

ATF form 4590 gives one point For Each 1/4” Over 6” in Overall Length. Also one point per OZ with total Weapon Weight W/Magazine.

Total needed is 75 points for a semi automatic handgun.

the bench grinder helped heat up any Loctite holding the screw or fake can in place. This process should be done fairly quickly because of this.

Yes, I have eight. I plan on jewing some out on gunbroker in a few years when cost and demand goes back up.

They are amazingly reliable shooters and eat up even the worst quality 22lr.

And there you have it! This handgun is an amazing suppressor host if you can deal with the non-kosher thread pitch of 1/2x20. I simply purchased an adapter that iconverters threaded for the cans I have.

Every single pistol i have converted so far has had good threads that are concentric to the bore and they are just as reliable with a can.

Somehow kicks less than my Ruger 22/45 bull barrel even though the beretta weighs much less.

The open top design allows you to see what is going on in the action and makes press checks easy.

I just wish It had a 10 round magazine instead of 8.

Apparently Israeli agents carried it on an empty chamber with the hammer back and safety off when carrying it concealed. The action is like glass yet groups are very tight because the barrel mounts right into dovetails on the frame.

Takedown is super easy with the beretta style takedown lever.
>>
>really want one of these little guys

Anyway, good thread OP.

>>30299583
I have a feeling the cans were made/done on the cheap by Israeli Armorers on the behalf of Century arms to get them past Customs/ATF. The weight of the can also helped get to 75 points so they can import it.

The standard Beretta 71 doesn't meet the 75 points required for foreign import of a handgun under the gun control act of 1968.

Beretta slapped target sights and an extended barrel to import them for a few more years but the model was never truly popular in the states. It also helped that the Israelis were buying hundreds of thousands of them.

When the 92 came out they made a 22lr conversion kit for that frame which makes the right amount of points for import.

I love my 71. Has anyone had any luck sourcing replacement recoil and magazine springs? I've been looking into adapting springs from other guns but haven't found anything that will work for sure.
>>
>>30302945
There was a guy selling them on rimfirecentral but he has run out and is hording the rest for himself.

I suspect he was scalping/reselling the springs he bought from numrich.
>>
>>30302859
Fuck, it's such a small and light little thing too, which is why I like it more than the conversion kits or the Neos, the 71 is something you could teach a kid to shoot with.

Did people make normal short barrels for when the long barreled ones were sold in the US?

So while we're at it, how would the removal of this fake suppressor go? I have one and my Form 1 should be back by the end of next month. When I first got it, the manufacturer said the barrel is pinned on. The pin is visible from the outside and meets the threads like this. How do I get the pin out since it is not a screw? Do I just have to take a dremel and go to town on this thing?
>>
>>30303435

Grind the weld off the side(s) of the pin and tap it out with a punch? It'll be easier if you don't care about the fake can.

>>30303435

Typically the fake PBS style suppressors are pinned through the muzzle device detent hole rather than a drilled hole like on the Beretta 71.

Usually you can just fit a cutting wheel between the front sight block and the fake suppressor to cut that pin, then heat the base of the fake suppressor to melt the loctite they probably coated the threads with. The muzzle device detent hole is usually open on both ends with a roll pin securing the detent and spring. With a fake can on their they have covered the rear opening with a bead of silver solder or weld.

Dunno if this is the case if yours but that's how mine is.

Pin is only in one side. Like this.

Don't care about the can at all. It's going to have a muzzle brake on, and eventually a real can
>>
>>30303476
I'd be willing to pay that for one in decent condition to have it, after all, the Beretta 84FS can go for that and that's something that was imported fairly recently (and I'd honestly carry it)
>>
allan's armory will occasionally have one that already has the fake can removed.

I want one myself, but my current situation does not allow for one.

>>30303525
Post 68's and target models come with sensitive and bulky adjustible sights which I wouldn't want to carry. Also most 71's are pre 68 which means it has the crossbolt safety and pre revision parts.
>>
>>30303555
God I wish Beretta would reinvent the Cheetah line and bring it back to the US.

Turn the 84FS into a locked-breech gun so that the slide is super easy to manipulate, make a modern variant of the 71

>>30303604
This. The 84 is too big of a handgun for it not to have some kind of a recoil reduction system. I would rather carry a compact polymer frame 9mm that has the same capacity at the same size and 3/4 the weight of the cheetah.

fake can is pressed right up against the gas block so I can't tell of there's a pin in it

however...
>>
>>30303848
>>30303883
this is a strange pin I've never known coming out the back of the detent. I am unfamiliar with how muzzle devices should mount to the M92 so I'm wondering if this one, held in by a roll pin, is the one holding the can on?

The suppressor has a really small amount of back and forth play if you screw on it
>>
>>30303790
One of my "excellent" condition Beretta 71's came with a finish like yours, the slide has half original finish and then was dipped in a park tank.

Needless to say I sent it back to get another one with the original finish. Unacceptable.
>>
>>30303883

Oh hell. Then yeah you have a pin going right through and butting up against the threads. Ohio Rapid Fire and some others tended to avoid doing it that way because it can easily jack up the threads since most customers were planning to SBR. You'll have to get some decent drill bits and very carefully drill that out. I'd probably cut away some of the fake suppressor to expose more of the pin as well.

Your detent pin looks like it was either installed wrong or it got pushed out hard enough to bypass that small roll pin on the side. There should be a spring that goes with that detent too.

I grabbed a picture of a typical Yugo gas block muzzle device detent from google images. This is how they typically work and applies to the Bulgarian and current Russian integrated gas blocks too.

There is a channel that has a detent pin that locks into a groove on your muzzle device. That pin is inserted from the back along with a spring and kept in place with the roll pin you can see in the picture.
>>
>>30303941
This. I would try and go at it from the side.

Last option would be to cut it down to as small as you can get it and them make two cuts on each side just short of the threads. Then drive a wedge into the crack and break the chunk off the threads.

So it should be in there further than it is? I just knocked the pin out and the detent won't go in either direction. Guessing the fake can is pressed up against it and pushing it out? I suppose I'll do an update thread on this whenever I get my Form 1 and have a go at the threads.
>>
>>30303971
