Where? If the Mongol armies invaded Eirope they would have lost pretty succinctly because of their style of warfare and the geography, but if they where on the defensive it would be a massacre in the other direction.

Horse bows can't pierce steel plate. hell, late medieval plate was even safe from 120lb warbows.

now a horse archer is probably a bit faster on his light horse and minimal weight.

once the Mongolian is out of arrows or the knight's horse is dead, the Mongolian wouldn't be able to do much execpt run.

if it were an actual fight the knight would more than likely win.

I say more than likely because real fighting isn't made of absolutes

The Franks had the best heavy cavalry and fortifications in the world by the late 13th century, but were politically divided and generally unruly, undisciplined, and insobordinate in battle. The Mongols were better disciplined and united, but even with their Chinese engineers I bet they would have had a lot of trouble with the great castles in France. In more confined battle fields the shock of the first charge could be decisive.

So it's a toss up. The petty barons of Europe could have easily totally fucked themselves with battle plans by committee and feudal rivalry like in every one of the later crusades and the Mongols could have just have easily been stalled by fortifications or crushed by the charge of heavy horse and couched lance.

The whole "hurr durr east asians were better at everything" meme needs to die. I like history but can't read anything anymore that doesn't piss me off with its modern liberal biases.

the 13th century was where plates began to gain real traction in armor. but even so, mail with a gambeson underneath is plenty enough to stop a horsebow. ask any crusader about his time in the holy lands.
