So, I'm doing some reserch into infantry loads.
In 1944, Australian infantry marching order, everything a soldier would need for three days, weighed in at fifty five pounds.
In 1986, the first gear I was issued with, weighed in at thirty kilos.
2006, it was up to forty two kilos.
2016 and weighing my body armour, helmet, pack and all weighs in at fifty two kiloS.

I have access to all the uk army, USMC, us army, French army, German army, Canadian and Brazil load caring studies and they are all saying the same thing:
Grunts are carring too much.

My question is, do YOU think you are humping too much?
Forget the macho my pack weighs more than yours bullshit, I just want an honest opinion on the weight infantry carry.
>>
Why are you on 4chan in what must be your late 40's
>>
>>30271033
Fifty one.
And I'm here because I'm asking in every forum I can find to get a wide range of opinions before I set up the defence survey.
>>
>>30271038
defense survey huh??

got any land 400 info
>>
>>30271029
Very interesing topic. I was conscripted as a Fussilier (Infantry Rifleman). Reading your post I realize I fucking carried nothing.

4.1 kg for the rifle
3-4 for the harness with pouches (gas mask, ammo...)
The pack couldn't have been more than 12-15 kg..
>>
>>30271051
Nothing, I'm working on getting GASG to buy lighter gear.
>>
>>30271059
Plus the ballistic vest, another 9 kg.
>>
Strayan...51... enlisted 1986... still ARA.... browsing /k
>Are you me?

Yeah, packs get bigger and we get more shit to fill them with.
About the only improvement is AN/PRC-152 over -25/77 sets
>>
>>30271059
Light infantry is disappearing.
Resuplying a force every day seems to be too hard for some reason.
Higher command want troops that can be all but independent for a week.
Every one in body armour, lots of shiny kit to show off and networked.
>>
>>30271067
I have fond memories of the 77 set.
Five periods of instruction and you could use it.
The 150 and 152 take two weeks to learn.

I guess it makes sense for the defence force of a small nation. We won't get parachuted into a hundreds of miles desert land.

pic is our MREs :D
>>
>>30271086
Is that a meal?
>>
>>30271086
Yeah its a can of delicious chilli con carne with a small cooker. Usually reffered to as Chilly Johnny. Good enough in cold winter nights...

You have my sympathies.
Australian rations are not bad.
Better than us MREs
Not as good as the French
Italian rations come with wine but you have to put up with garlic in everything

Strayan Ratpacks seem to have at least doubled in size in 30years.
Still strip out half of it and throw it away.
>almost get nostalgic for Corned beef #2, yes it was as crap as Beefinpeanutbutter to eat cold straight from the tin, but at least you could add the curry powder and freezedried rice to cook a decent feed when you got the time
>>
>>30271111
Go find an airsoft thread somewhere, kid, soldiers are talking here
>>
>>30271033

Why are you on 4chan when you're clearly underage and a faggot?
>>
>>30271111
Kid, do you have any idea how old /k/ is?
This is probably the "oldest" board around. The reason being many convenientional gun forums are AWFUL.
>>
>>30271138

Same with UK ration packs I've found.

I'd normally trade out my bagged pudding for some oat biscuits but aside from just not carrying half of it there's not much you can do to shed weight. Enough food for a week's exercise was a significant weight - not including water.

A detailed understanding of an infantryman's nutritional needs has meant they now know how many fucking calories we need. The only way you could get more energy for less weight would be energy gel/powdered food but after 2 days that stuff is horrific.
>>
There is room for improvements.
We can't really cut down helmets and CBA until some nextgen technology arrives, but we can cut weight in other areas.
Goretex/polarfleece jacket was a good start.
Bivybags and Snugpak Softies instead of the nylonfilled fartsack.
Stop adding trendy jackrat items into the CR1M, maybe try some of those endurance concentrated goos and powerbars instead of more pissofflollies to give the same energy/protein and less bulk.
Carbonfibre e-tool handle - not a sexy new weapon, but hasn't been looked at since 1960s
>>
The best you'll be able to do is shave a couple kilos here and there, a little at a time.
>>
>>30271188
Unfortunately that shit costs money, money defence would rather spend on P8's, new subs and ships, f35s and of course paying for sluts tit jobs and faggots sex changes. Shame really.
>>
>>30271214
Speaking of shaving.
Fuck it off. It's a hangover from the 1800s and only stull there to keep the Reggies amused.
Save weight in not carrying the razor, spare blades, whichever soap/foam, plus the extra cups canteen, and the extra water that is wasted not hydrating, plus extra hexamine to heat it.
>don't pull the 'improves morale' BS, anyone ever met a bearded Sascat with bad morale?
>>
>>30271229
Maybe doesn't improve morale, but certainly increases hygene. You can at least be sure that your troops wash their face and hands minimum once a day.
>>
>>30271029
In 1944 only US Army was fully motorised, so the soldiers had to actually march with that shit.
>>
>>30271172
This board and also /ck/ - which is full of drunk old cunts.
>>
>>30271244
Nah, all it shows is that we've run a dull piece of metal over our face, created some nicks to get infected, and left half washed off soap clogging the skin before adding another layer of camcream from scratch, so that's extra camcream weight to carry as well.
>Again how many Sascats need facial rash chits from 'dirty' beards compared to all the jube diggs slicing through their zits every morning?
>>
>>30271229
I'll take "Grizzly Adams can't wear a gas mask" for five hundred, Alex.

Fucking summerfags
>>
>>30271229
>Fuck it off. It's a hangover from the 1800s and only stull there to keep the Reggies amused.
It's a hangover from WW1 when beard caused gas masks to not seal completely.
>>
>>30271288
I've worn S10 over a full beard and got it to seal. Given the modern lack of CBRN, outside of Chem EOD who routinely even does a gastent these days?

Actually with wasting time on crap like the 30% Halal ratpacks to increase our gender and cultural diversity, why not get DMO to make a mask that doesn't need a skin seal? Maybe attach it to the edge of the hood to seal and then the CA can be our next AotY for increasing our employment opportunities for moslems, sikhs and hairy greek chicks, and all the hairy Pussers.
>>
>>30271229

Have you ever seen the fucking beards some of the younger squaddies try to grow when out in Afghan? They are a disgusting pubey embarrassment. Not soldierly in the least.

Besides, it's been stated time and again that they won't allow facial hair, and how heavy is a razor, really?
>>
>>30271460
Just the same as all the dodgy bush porn-mo's.
>'not soldierly' and 'they won't allow' isnt an answer, its just the 'its tradition' BS that is why we never move forward, next we'll go back to blanco-ing our web belts.
How heavy is a razor? It wasn't just the razor you'd save weight on, it's all the other associated kit. Anyway, it's about the same as a toothbrush, but everybody still cuts off half the handle of their toothbrush to save room.
>>
Reminder that ww2 germans were not allowed to carry more than a single ration and a sweater plus gun food + maintainence
>>
>>30271288
>refer to >>30271143
>>
>>30271029
Because they have us carry shit we don't need to justify buying stuff that only serves to pad General's wallets.

The fucking Thor system is a good example of this. Fucking couple that I had on deployment didn't even work.
>>
>>30271342
When I worked nuclear, we used escape hoods. Goes over the entire head, seals around the neck. Routinely got it to seal up just fine regardless of facial hair. I think the only down side would be the short filter life, but putting a 40mm connector on it would solve that. Gives better skin protection, too.

... plus gasmask, plus shelter-half, plus blanket, plus steilgranaten, plus entrenching tool, plus cool adolfhitler dagger to sell to sad neonazi wannabes 50 years later, plus bootbrush for jackboots, fistful of iron crosses, shaving gear, and mandatory photo of sweetheart back in Dresden to pull out just before the Englische kommandos sneak up on him...

That's not true. When were you in the army? I was in the swiss infantry too (2014-2015).
We had for a "kampf komplett" (combat situation equipment):
Ammo: ± 2.5kg
Ballistic Vest: ± 13kg
Helmet: ± 1kg
Sig550: ± 4.1kg
Package (clothes/camping shit/Cleaning tools/maybe ABC gear): ± 10-15kg
Food/water: ±3kg
KS90: ± 1kg
Harness/mag pouch vest: ± 4kg
Specialize equipment depending of your specialization/MOS? (Minimi/Panzerfaust/Explosive/Radio/Marksman): ± 5-10kg

So it's actually more like: ±47.6kg for a standard swiss infantry man in combat (combat exercise for till SHTF). It can be more like ±38-40kg if the backpack stays in the APC.
Yeah if you're only going to shoot at the range with your platoon you will only carried like 15-20kg max but not in "einsatz".

>>30271132
Fuck that. I have only see one, ONLY ONE FUCKING CHOCOLATE BAR during my entire time in the army!!!
Why? Because fucking fatties of the logistic eat it all. Fuck them.
>>
>>30272712
In fact it's more like a chest ring mixed to an harness
