because the sword's sole purpose, really, was to kill people.
spears were used for hunting, same with bows, crossbows, etc. axes were used in carpentry, billhooks in coppicing.

But you dont use a sword for farming. or the likes.

As such, it developed a degree of.. myth, I suppose, for want of a better word. It also took a lot more work to make one, than say, a spear, or the likes. so that means it became a status symbol - almost universally, from saxons to samurai, the sword user was someone of high standing.

combine it all together, and even though swords are long since obsolete, a little of that reverence and distinction still carries through, in such a way that it still resonates through many different cultures.

"[The sword] is such a weapon that all the people use it; the one who knows (how to use it) and the one who does not, young and old are protected by it everywhere. An it (the sword) is (such) a good brother that it does not become inactive in wide or even narrow places. One needs it on the sea and on the land and in crowd. On a very windy day the lance becomes a burden for its possessor, but this (the sword) never becomes useless. And on that day the archer can not shoot his arrow straight, (therefor) no one can do without the sword."

"Although they have many weapons, they would never be able to do without the sword, but those who have swords can do without all the other weapons."

Muhammad Ibn Ya qub Ibn Ahi Hazzam al-Hattali, Kitab al-Furusiyya va'l-Baytara, 14th century

Similar notions can be found far east of that, as it seems some from the old Japanese arts consider the sword to be the bets universal weapon, not the best bet in any situation, but you least worst option when taken over every scenario and weapon combination reasonable to run into.

Of course, it may not be that there's only one factor at work here, and which cause or combination of causes has served to give the sword a strong standing in one culture may not be the same as those which have done the same within another.

Yes, I know.

When I was a writer for a company the editor finally snapped, sent back the draft copy as a print version rather than email, with a keyboard with the comma key pried off.

On the other hand, there are worse things than an excess of punctuation. Like not using it at all.

KM!

Jesus, it's been years and you're still on here. I love it man.

What's your opinion on sharps from non-large smiths like Albion? I'd love something like the Munich but I'm not sure $2,000 is really worth it. A lot of other smiths seem to work in the $1,500 range and such.

That is a really nice sword. The pommel looks comfy to hold.

>>30246921

I've taken a recent liking to these. They can have the proportion and function of a longsword, but has that single edge that I find aesthetically pleasing.

Albion, well, their stuff certainly looks sexy. Should handle well too.

That said, they are certainly extremely expensive. Basic config Munich for example ends up being about +50% compared to a Dürer from Arms and Armor, and that isn't exactly a budget tier maker.

Materials used are, from what I've understood, wholly unremarkable.

Whether it's worth it or not will be a subjective call. Though with full custom work being an option at this price point (and in some cases a lot cheaper) I do find the Albions a somewhat hard sell. But I can certainly see why people buy from them as well.
>>
>>30247623

what is the difference between a tachi and a katana? They appear the same to me.
>>
>>30248712
The problem with full custom is I don't even know what would truly make it better for myself compared to a mass produced one.

But yeah, that makes sense. Well finished/polished + good pictures really is what sells albion I think.
>>
>>30248804
Mostly the way they are worm.
The blade alone would not look different from a more curved style of katana with relatively long blade.
>>
>>30248804
This simple, strict definition is based on how you wear it. A tachi has the mounting hardware on the scabbard to hang from your belt, edge down. A katana lacks such, as is thrust through your sash instead, edge up.

Now apart from that we have some commonly seen stylistic differences. Katana for example were meant to be used on foot, while the tachi originated as a cavalry sabre. As such, tachi tend to be longer. Edo period legal limits to blade lengths limited such diversity pretty severely though.

Some blade styles (based on somewhat subtle things like amount of taper, how much it curves where, length of tip, etc) are also primarily associated with one or the other, if nothign else so due to having been fashionable when either tachi or katana were the most common.

Blades for either are traditionally signed on what will be the outside of the tang when worn. As this changes with edge orientation, that's another way to tell them apart.

Since these are both features of the blade, and the hard definition goes by the scabbard, we can obviously have a tachi blade in katana mounts and vice versa. And a considerable number of old tachi blades where cut down and given katana mounts later on.

Some styles of fittings will also only really be seen with one or the other, even if you theoretically could carry them over.

Yeah, you need to know what you want with the custom, and ideally match things to a smith that's good at that.

>Well finished/polished + good pictures
+ very sexy designs.
>>
>>30248804
Generally they were longer with more curve, and a less effective thrusting point. As they were more specialized for cavalry

The fittings were often different and they were worn different - edge facing down instead of up like on a katana/wakizashi.

However this isn't always true as many tachi were cut down to make katana, many people had katana made that were more like tachi, with a longer blade or with more curve to them, and people could have their katana customized with fittings to resemble a tachi.
