ITT: We suggest upgrades for the Irish Air Force

>Some have suggested replacing Ireland's propeller air force with more advanced F/A-18s (see concept), which the Republic currently cannot afford given its present military budget.

What do you think?

Gripens seem like the obvious solution.
>>
Just scrap it and get a bunch of surface-launched missiles.
>>
>>30224192
Buy whatever is cheapest, the UK will protect you if you are invaded.
>>
>>30224192
Didn't they just make air guns classify as firearms?
Why would a country like that deserve / want a better military?
>>
Just scrap it and let England take care of your security who are you kidding what has ireland done in the past 100 years ?
>>
>>30224192
why have a military in the first place? who's going to invade? The British?

They don't even want the rest of Ireland after the 1970s.
>>
Whats wrong with propellor airplanes?

They are perfectly fine for non-stealthed military aircraft
>>
Just give the AF budget to the UK in return for protection. Any other option is a complete waste of money.
>>
>>30224214
>Didn't they just make air guns classify as firearms?

Wrong -land, mate.
>>
Between the US and UK, Ireland already has airspace protection from Ivan, and the US would slap the hell out of the UK if they tried recolonizing the emerald isle. I'm honestly not sure what need they have for an air force.
>>
The only jet combat aircraft the Irish ever used was a fifty year old French trainer that was retired without replacement two decades ago.

What gets me is Denmark is only slightly larger than Ireland and has sixty F-16's.
>>
>>30224385
>and the US would slap the hell out of the UK if they tried recolonizing the emerald isle

No, I don't think so. I mean for one the situation is so unrealistic it's stupid and for another the UK is a US ally and Ireland isn't.
>>
>>30224396
Denmark is significantly closer to Russia and controls a choke point for the Russian Baltic fleet.

several of these for AEW and surface coverage
>>
>>30224418
Not much point in early warning if there's nothing you can do about it
>>
>>30224425
just deploy hundreds of Vari-Eze SVBIEDs

But really, Ireland's main goal here is to police its EEZ, not fight a major war. They need to be able to intercept fishing boats and the occasional warship. Any airplane that can reach out there at a high subsonic would be adequate.
>>
No point, Ireland is just about the last on the list for countries that need to worry about a conventional war and prop planes are just fine for counter-insurgency.

And if for some reason UK, US or Russia got it in their heads to go after your lucky charms you couldn't afford to buy and maintain enough to make a big difference anyways.

>>30224656

Mostly its just your neighbors and international responsibilities.

I live in Canada, and depending on your point of view we are either Uncles Sams bitch or get the burgers to pay our defense budget. But we still need to provide a token force for NATO missions and give the Russians something to worry about in the arctic.

The Irish don't need to worry about anything more than Potatoes and homegrown terrorists, and their only neighbor cant even colonize its own capital.

Ireland isn't actually in that bad of a position to upgrade it's airforce when you think about it: The F35 program has gone so stupendously over-budget that Canada has pulled out, but it'll probably only be one to two decades before drones are either sophisticated or numerous enough to render expensive manned fighters obsolete. If you effectively didn't have an airforce you could slowly start building up a drone force without sacrificing from manned fighters and all the vested interests in them.

Armed drones or ISTAR focused drones?

I could see Ireland filling the ISTAR niche, would give them some serious capability to bring to the table of a coalition.
>>
If you want to make a budget air force, there's only one supplier - China.

There's the Chinkshit fighter made for Pakistan, the JF-17. The Block 3 version should be available for $32m a piece.

Finally, there's also the Chinkshit J/F-7G. It's cheap. It flies even during the night. African countries use it. Therefore potatoniggers should be able to afford it, too.

If you really cannot afford real fighters, buy at least some fake fighter. They cost less than $17m a piece and make noise when they fly. Possible options are the Yakolev Yak-130, the Hongdu L-15, Guizhou JL-9, Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master, or the Aero L-159.
>>
>>30227330
KAI FA-50 is available for $30m too.

And between JF-17 supplied by China/Pakistan or FA-50 supplied by South Korea, the choice is easy. Don't forget that the FA-50 can embark an EJ200 (Typhoon) engine. It would be clever to cooperate with UK on that subject.

But M-346 would be a better overall option i guess.
>>
>>30227355
The FUCK-1 is better than that Korean piece of shit!

First, it's designed as a modern fighter that has to counter J-10's and J-11's, while the FA-50 is mainly a trainer. Should the FA-50 ever has to face a menace, it would be Best Korean MiG-17's. Hardly a challenge for anything built after 1965.

Anyway, knowing the worst Koreans, the FA-50 it's just a F-100 Super Sabre with some plastic tuning parts made by Kimichi Ass International to look more modern. FA also stands for Fake Ass, and 50 is the age of the structure in years.

Then, we should also talk about manufacturing quality. When I was a kid, all my toys were made in Taiwan. Nothing good, apart of toxic cup noodles, has ever come out of Korea until the late 1990's when Samsung phones and LG air conditioners started to get popular. But still then, manufacturing was outsourced to more capable countries like China, and Vietnam.
>>
>>30227490
If "AIDC F-CK-1 Ching-Kuo" so good, why is it used only by Taiwan Mister Memelord?
>>
>>30227551
No one wants to anger China, who would be really pissed if anyone started to purchase Taiwanese military equipment. No one cares about the Fail Army 50 because it's just a trainer. Only the Spics of Asia want to use it as fighter.
>>
>>30227355
Those things are just trainers though and a low-cost platform to swat Best Korean MiG-21s

>>30227787

The L-159 sale is still on. Iraq got theirs for roughly 2 million dollars apiece. Cheaper than Tucanos, certainly more expensive to run but the balance in performance remains. I'd say 12 aircraft, 6 in operation.

>>
>>30227154

>>
>>30227787
What gives it an advantage compared to other trainers ia that it is a supersonic aircraft. It was designed early on as F-4 and F-5 replacement so it is equipped with more capable avionic suite (Elta radar, Litening targeting pod and whatnot).

Basically it somewhat followed gripen evolution; which was originally meant as trainer/light figher to replace tunnan and draken, (but the requirement was changed later on to make it a true figher in itself because they couldn't find a proper replacement for Viggen)

The main difference is that, while Sweden rely on Gripen as its primary fighter aircraft, Korea has buttloads of KF-16 (F-16 block 40) and F-15K (not to mention their pet project, the KFX) and F/A-50 will mostly perform secondary duties
>>
>>30227897
For a low-cost Air Force which has no projection power whatsoever, it's a great aircraft.

Gripens would be ideal (in low numbers, less than 36), to have air interception capabilities.

FA50's for Light Fighter/Ground Attack missions.

For a country with the size of Ireland it could actually work,

Obviously Typhoon's are out for cost reasons.

Unless they are buying old worn out Hornets, wouldn't Gripen be a better choice?

F/A-50 might be a good choice too, but I honestly don't know enough about it. I like the concept, but I'm not sure if the performance is there, or even relevant.

Hawks are another good choice to provide simple patrols and interdiction. Though I'm not sure how much better they would be than Super Tucanos in an actual war.
