Forgive my lack of knowledge, but would it be possible to remove the front part of the stock on an m39 as in the picture attached? Aside from removing the barrel clasp and cutting down the wood, would there be any other modifications needed to achieve something like in the picture?
>>
Why the fuck would you do that?
>>
don't do it you degenerate
>>
Fuck right off bubba
>>
>>30204130
do it and post pics of you sawing the stock
>>
>>30204136
I like how it looks and the m39 I might buy has a big fracture in the front end anyway.
>>
>>30204130
If you're actually set on doing something like that use a fucking round receiver m91/30
>>
>>30204183
I haven't bought the gun yet. If I do get it then i'll post a thread so you can get your bubba hate on.
>>
>>30204189
The stock on the 91/30 wouldn't work for what i'm doing. The gun is already pretty fucked up anyway.
>>
>>30204130
you could do that but the middle barrel band will likely fall off since you cut off the retaining spring

if it helps fine fin stocks in good condition cost more on their one than a normal nugget good luck finding one to fuck up

both me and my neighbor have mosin nagant carbines. mine looks like the top rifle in your photo because it is russian army surplus. his looks like the bottom rifle in your photo because it was sold on the civilian market as a hunting rifle.

>>
>>30204130

From a purely practical standpoint, what's the actual reason for having the barrel almost entirely covered by the front of the stock, as in the above rifle?

I don't think you'd hold the rifle that far forward (and if even if you could), it seems like a lot of weight which would tire your arm and make it harder to swing the rifle quickly. Does it have some effect on the barrel itself?

>>30204704
helps balance the rifle and keeps your hands from burning as the barrel gets hot
>>
>>30204704
Yes. If you have a long, thin barrel with nothing to support it it will waggle like a flaccid dick when you fire.

This kills the accuracy.

On many modern rifles it's fine of course, they're designed to have the barrel be like that, but old military rifles have generally thin barrels, so removing the support just ruins the accuracy. If you're gonna take the wood off you should shorten the barrel too and just have yourself a shitty carbine instead. It will be more accurate and at least you'll be able to make fireballs when you shoot it.

On the flip side, you can accurate weapons like that by stuffing material (cork is the most sanitary option, but oily cloth can be used if Soviets happen to be charging over the hill this very moment) in between the barrel and the wood at the chamber and at the foremost ring, leaving the barrel in the middle suspended and not touching the wood.
>>
>>30204224
Would it be possible to put a m91/30 stock on a M39 then?
>>
>>30204910
with alot of modification sure
youd have to re inlet most of it
>>
>>30204903
But m39s are almost free floated anyways right? They arent all clamped on like 91/30s

>>
>>30204903

I'm not sure it would balance the gun in a good way. The thing is already pretty long, the last thing I imagine you would want is more weight at the front. And I already mentioned that the very front part there (that the OP is considering removing) is too far out the front to comfortably grip while shooting.

>>30204903

Hmm. Is the wood really rigid enough, and tight enough around the barrel to make a significant difference though? Fair enough if it is I guess.

Why would having the centre of the barrel free-floating make it more accurate, but having the end of the barrel free-floating makes it less accurate?

>Why would having the centre of the barrel free-floating make it more accurate, but having the end of the barrel free-floating makes it less accurate?
free floating is not the only way to increase accuracy.
what you want is consistency.
if the barrel whips around like a mofo when shot its fine as long as it whips around the same way every shot.
if the stocks touching the barrel its fire as long as the same sections of the stock are whats touching the stock each shot.

corking the end of a mosin removes contact from the rest of the stock isolating the barrel from the stock except for the 2 contact points of the receiver and cork

without the cork random high or tight spots are touching the barrel
>>
>>30204282
That does not change the fact you need to kill your self.

Why? The Renov looks like its a Mauser 93, you might as well just get a sporterized Argie Mauser and do it off of that

No amount of fuckery will make your M39 anything like a VZ54. Think of it, you're ruining what an M39 is as a surplus rifle while not getting something that can be called a VZ54. I dont know if you care but the value of these collectible guns is always rising. After chopping it up you probably set its value at 200> at best for forever
>>
>all these slavaboos whining over you wanting to do something with your meme rifle

>>
>>30204251

There are a ton of already "sporterized" (read: ruined) M-N rifles in the market in United States and Finland. If you need one, buy one of them instead of ruining one more m/39 and in the process reducing its financial value by about half.
>>
>>30205552

The closest equivalent to Vz 54 would be m/28-76, which is now available only in secondary market.

However it is worth noting that most m/28-76 do not work with surplus ammunition, so I would recommend it only for those who make their own ammo.
>>
The Renov looks nothing like a Finnish M39. If anything, it's likely based on the Vz.54 Mosin, but even then that's a far shot. The stock reminds me of an amalgamation of a bubba'd Mosin and a P17 Enfield with a retarded front sight post and a Mauser action.

Trying to recreate it will end in a spectacular failure.
>>
>>30206915
Will it still be worth $290? maybe
Will it still shoot? yes
How is this >spectacular failure
>>
>>30207135
>Will it still be worth $290
No
>Will it shoot
A piece of tube with a shot shell will shoot, that doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Spectacular failure comes from the fact that you're ruining a good rifle to make a gun that looks like shit specifically because the devs couldn't get airshit weapons to model off of. Kojima didn't want shit guns, but the company that produced realistic airshit told him to fuck off so they winged it. The result is a piss poor design that's unrealistic and grotesque in appearance, and you're going to ruin an aesthetically pleasing, well functioning rifle to recreate a weapon that they wanted to make but couldn't due to the lack of capital?

You're basically steampunk tier.

the primary reason for it is bayonet fighting, the wood protecst the barrel from being hit by the enemies bayonet, barrel wobble and the other BS answers given are wrong, there is a reason post WWII rifles were built with free floated barrels like this 28/76
>>
>>30206126
that rifle isn't sporterized though
>>
>>30209698
you have to find someone who inherits granpa's rifles and doesn't have a clue what they are, you can find idiots like this and these idiots are the reason gunshops will always offer you $100 for your antique Colt because some jackass is more than willing to be ripped off like that.
>>
>>30205454
Find a ruler or something, hold one end tight in your hand and flick the other end.

Now secure both ends and flick the middle (with your dick I guess, idk)

Which moved more?

Having a good, firm grip on the far end is much more secure than having it just kind of rest unevenly inside the full length of the stock, and it's a hell of a lot better than just having it flapping free.

One of many reasons was bayonets. These things had been super important to western military thinking for centuries, so it lasted into WWII. If you were going to use your bayonet, the thought was you would have been firing prior. As such, the wood was to provide an insulated place to touch the entire length of the rifle, keeping the bayonet an effective option.
