I'm getting a new lower (Spikes), upper (Spikes), and handguard (Midwest Industries MLOK Gen 3).

Everything gets here Friday except for the lower which gets here Monday.

If I have the FFL put my complete upper on, plus the buffer tube + stock, do I still need to wait the 7 days? Or can he sell it as a complete rifle at that point?

Until the barrel extension comes unscrewed in 500 rounds, causes excess headspace and the gun blows up.

They and Vulcan are literally the only commercially-produced AR's that are legitimately unsafe to use.

Poorfag here, is there a guide to ~800$ ARs? I want to build or buy a real basic bitch M4 style carbine. Chrome lined barrel is a must. Any recommendations? I know to stay away from Del-Ton and ATI, whats the word on CMMG?

Yes. It's called "save up another thousand dollars."
>but seriously
Lurk PSA's sales. $800 will get you a complete rifle with irons and optic that doesn't suck if you lurk sales, or a complete rifle with irons that doesn't suck if you don't lurk sales.

CMMG is good quality with some dumb design elements. Mainly handguard choice. And they're a little overpriced, but as a fellow Missourian I like them.

In that case, $800 will take you a long damned way. It's enough for a fairly /arg/ approved camwhore gun plus either a new cheap-but-good optic or a used high-end optic.

>>30143196
Yes, but they'll be arfcom and 300blktalk forum posts about people trying to remove muzzle devices and having it come unscrewed. So far haven't found any evidence of it doing during actual use but it's a known issue and people are pissed about it because it's 100% caused by them cutting corners during assembly.

Define inexpensive.

MBUS Gen2's are fine (if ugly and bulky), and can be had for ~$25. Gen1's are also fine and can be had for like $15.

You can occasionally snag a Matech used on Ebay for $45-55 (they used to be like $25 but supply dried up).

The holy grail are the USMC-stamped KAC Micro rears on Ebay. Depending on how impatient you are you can get one from $45-65, with a median price right around $60. They're pretty much the best rear sight made.

Yes, they just started issuing them out with RCO's instead of having the carry handles sit in the armory. The last rifle qual I did the new data books had them, so they just don't have enough for every unit yet. The ones on eBay are ones being pocketed by shady armorers I bet, if something isn't serialized then that shit gets disappeared fast as fuck.

The complete inability to hold over or range along with capped turrets so you can't dial either.

The Accupoint/power series are the tube scope equivalent of a red dot with a magnifier and at their price points are simply not competitive in features or glass quality with other variable 1-n optics provided by other manufacturers.

Honestly thinking about that as well but again still leaves me with a 223/556 lower and a desire to see whats up with pistons.

Most people that are like "pistons arent worth it" assume that the desire to use one stems from a belief that they are "superior" to D.I. and brings up that old argument. I just want to play around with one but dont want to spend the money on a total piece of shit. Hence the reason I was thinking of getting a well assembled upper.

Hoping you guys can help me break-down the total investment in building this package.

>"60rds fired through. Colt 14.5" heavy socom barrel, bcm a2x flash hider(pinned and welded by ccs), 6 position mil-spec receiver extension(buffer tube), Colt butt stock, matech buis, Cardinal upper receiver, smith enterprise bcg, New Frontier Armory alum lower, I'll throw in (3) usgi 30 rds mags."

Note, he's switching out the BUIS for the USGI carry handle pictured, and the carbine will have milspec CAR handguards.

Colt 14.5 inch SOCOM barrel: $300
Cardinal upper: $70
Parts to complete upper: $50
Smith enterprises BCG: $220
Smith enterprises bolt: $100
BCM A2X flash hider: $30
Pinning flash hider: $50
USGI carry handle: $60
Stripped NFA G-15 lower: $80
Lower parts kit: $60
Stock/buffer/tube: $50
3 USGI mags: $30

So, about a total of $960 in parts. Assuming no shipping/sales tax/background or transfer fees.

I'm going to be trading a WASR for this carbine later today. I understand it isn't worth the same resale value as the parts cost to source, but am I doing good with this trade?

This carbine is basically what I'd want to build myself, and this would save me some work... and if my math is right, some money (WASR cost me $400 last year).

Thanks in advance for any advice or feedback. And apologies if my math is severely off...

I'm figuring out if the trade for a WASR is smart.

And these colts do not have a 14.5 inch barrel. Plus, they're not much cheaper, and are still missing components.

A 14.5 inch SOCOM barrel balances differently, and has a shorter OAL once both rifles have muzzle devices installed.

not that it's helping the value case but you can send your colt to specialized armament and he will do a 14-five-16 which is pretty sweet.

What rifle isn't? All the parts are cast in different factories then customized by the end-manufacturers. We've had milspec defined and published for more than long enough that this is an absolute non-issue to anything beyond dick wagging.

Even Asian countries have completely copied the AR design, manufacturing their own. It isn't complicated.

As for weight: 4 ounces for a better balance, and theoretically more accurate barrel, is a fair trade off for me. I never felt my 20 inch M16A4 clone build was too heavy, so I think I'll survive.

Sending in a barrel to get worked defeats the purpose. I'm talking about a trade, not designing my own AR from the ground up with a blank-check budget.

Dunno if you're still lurking but I'll be the lone voice of piston AR's I guess. I really like my POF. I've had it a few weeks and we're creeping on 1000 rounds with no oil, no cleaning, no wipe down. 300rds wolf, 250rds Tula, 200 rds of different brass case from Sportsman's and half a can of M193.

As you can see the receiver is clean as a whistle. BCG and bolt are also clean. Only malfunctions of the whole lot were two M193 stovepipes when I was playing around with the gas adjustment. It's also worth mentioning that I ran 6 magazines through the gun, semi rapid fire, and could kiss the BCG. It was barely warm to the touch.

Both the cleanliness over all and coolness of the rifle immediately after the shooting I've done leads me to personally believe SS piston is slightly superior to conventional AR design.

Is my AR better than say a Noveske, BCM, other good brand, or even a good home build with a quality trigger and barrel?
Nope. Probably not in 99% of situations.
However, I really like it and I can afford it so I bought it. I am certainly not at all disapointed.
>>
>>30148137
>We've had milspec defined and published for more than long enough that this is an absolute non-issue to anything beyond dick wagging.

lol okay. when your upper and lower have features that don't line up at all (something that actually occurs and i myself am an owner of one even thought both my upper and lower came from the SAME company) and the finishes are so drastically different you can tell me that this is an imaginary non-issue

also when your barrel index pin and gas port don't line up with your upper receiver's indexing slot you can also say that is imaginary because MUH MIL STD.

you're buying a fucking pile of shit. keep your wasr, save more money. it's obvious you're looking for a poorfag entry point and it's going to bite you in the ass later.

also buy a matched mega receiver set and try to tell anyone with a straight face that all AR's are the same. you can't even separate the upper and lower without forcing them apart even without any pins installed. there is a HUGE variance in precision of manufacturing in both the upper and lower in the AR world. that's why it fucking matters and isn't a dick waving contest like you think it is.

Colt uses cardinal upper receivers, so that concern is invalid. A colt barrel will mate to a cardinal upper.

New frontier armory lowers are made by Aero Precision. I've yet to hear of any issues mating these parts.

I suppose I'm confused as to how it's a meme. People don't seem to post about them much. I chose this over a similarly priced River 5.56 takedown that I found disappointingly plain for $1600.

>piston gun
Now this is a meme. But I openly said I don't think my gun is better than other well made AR's, it is just better for me for the reasons I listed. It's a bit easier to clean and dissipates heat better.

>receiver rug
Ummm... That's the housing for POF's drop in trigger, not a $20 piece of rubber.

You cannot claim that venting gas through the BCG doesn't deposit some excess heat that would not be there in a short stroke piston AR.

The Anon asked about piston uppers so I tried to illustrate a positive quality that I find important.

and yes i can make the claim because volume matters. the bolt well in the carrier is a huge chamber and retaining heat is very difficult there. it was designed that way ;)

You poor, dense thing. Let's establish some things here:

In a conventional AR you have a gas tube venting hot expanding gas back into the gas key and out the holes in the side of the BCG.

In a SS piston gun, the gas pushes the gas puck which pushes the op-rod against a solid piece on the BCG and all the gas from that process vents at the gas block, 8 inches from the receiver.

Now you claim that using the same ammo, ambient temp, rate of fire, etc. that both systems will build the same amount of heat and dissipate that heat at the same rate with regards to the BCG?

Does that pretty much sum up your claim or did I get it wrong?

it looks good but you can't know how it will fit together until you get to handle it

to address your statement about my own claims about no guaranteed fitment from the same manufacturer, it's true, but they usually put more care into fitting the uppers and lowers together when selling them as a complete unit like a rifle. i've witnessed this with a few rifles vs builds. it seems to be a trend that builds are most of the time very sloppy and complete rifles fit together really nicely. this is just my personal experience though.

Couple questions.

Is it normal for a new cam pin to be so tight you can barely get it out by hand?

Is it normal for one side of a firing pin retaining pin to be longer than the other?

gas pucks are not tappets you dummy.

>Now you claim that using the same ammo, ambient temp, rate of fire, etc. that both systems will build the same amount of heat and dissipate that heat at the same rate with regards to the BCG?

yes because the heat dissipation provided by volume of the gas well and the distance the gas has already traveled coupled with the fact that the tail of the bolt carrier has very low thermal mass compared to the time it takes for the gas to be fully evacuated by the carrier returning to locked position allows it to cool down before it becomes an issue. it was designed this way. that's what piston faggots don't understand. they think it was a flawed design. it isn't. it's highly refined. the ar15 is fully fleshed out, even compared to the hackjob ar10 or the m14. both of which are incomplete designs.

I understand that careful design went into the AR trying to mitigate the issue but the issue is still there. The fact that they had to design around the problem admits its existence and it still is not perfect.

>heat dissipation provided by volume of the gas well and the distance the gas has already traveled coupled with the fact that the tail of the bolt carrier has very low thermal mass compared to the time it takes for the gas to be fully evacuated by the carrier returning to locked position allows it to cool down before it becomes an issue

>cool down before it becomes an issue

You're admitting that you are incorrect at every possible turn. Do you want to give up yet? The entire argument is over whether or not the gas tube is dumping more heat into the BCG and dissipating it faster than a gun that doesn't dump heat into the BCG via a pipe and you just admitted that it does build heat but "not enough to matter."

That's what we call moving goal posts, friend.

it's not a "problem"... that's the point

>That's what we call moving goal posts, friend.
no, you don't understand that things cooling off and heating up have a ramp time. you're the typical plebe retard who buys into marketing shit. in short, you're stupid. it's a dynamic problem.

you know you can fire an infinite number of rounds through an AR15 if your schedule of fire is slow enough that you don't heat up the barrel or gas tube to the point of failure right?

the only time temps rise to the point where it becomes an issue (and not where you think they're an issue) is when you full auto fire from a magazine that holds more than 30 rounds.

the failure point on an AR-15 is at the gas tube, not the bolt or carrier. it was intentionally designed to fail first and only occurs when you rapidly feed the gun ammo in full auto fire.
>>
>>30149658
The KAC Micro is the one that completes the set, but you're not required to use it. AR front sights are standardized height. I'm currently using:
>MBUS gen1
>Troy HK-style folding
>MBUS Pro
>A2 fixed FSP
with mine

I'm not willing to pay $100-140 for just a front sight so I'll probably not get a KAC one.
