don't care for milsurp really.

I want the old hunting guns from the 30s through 80s before everyone cheapened out and you could get quality bolts with irons, nice sxs shotguns and great pre hillary hole and colt bluing that they lost the formula on revolvers.

Old designs can be pretty cool.

Like the Savage 99. A lever-action rifle chambered in numerous rounds, including the .308 family.

My Curios and Relics collector status with the ATF dictates that I have to like old guns so I don't have to pay FFL fees and have all my guns shipped directly to me.
>>
>>30137392
I actually love them, but then I'm all about history.

Its not because of the 'omg ww2 garand' thing, or because of a video game. Its about the story that guns tell of progression.

I'm fascinated by our methodical enhancement of firing mechanisms, from muzzle load to breech load to bolt and lever, to semi-auto and full auto. Even then the story is only half told, all of the strange, different ways we accomplished each of the stages, with weird, overcomplicated semis like a luger knuckle to the now classic slide. The mechanical differences they had because of either different methods of making a weapon work or because they were trying to reverse engineer a device they saw or heard about, its a picture into the desperation and ingenuity of mankind.
>>
>>30137392
I honestly think all old guns should be destroyed. If owning guns is about self defense and fighting tyranny, than out dated models are better served as recycling.

With the novelty of it being obsolete or having no purpose, yet still existing and being usable to an extent.

Hence why hipsters like vinyl. Nowadays, I'd say about 1 in 10 people actually give a fuck about sound quality (inb4 'dah bass is thumpin, yo') which is an aspect vinyl murders digital platforms in. But hipsters only seem to like spinning vinyl because it is now sort of obnoxious to change sides on an LP if you're having guests over, when shit like Spotify and YouTube exist, where you can hit designate a playlist.

It sort of forces people to notice what you're doing, so you can bask in the fleeting glory of being an attention whore.

That being said:
>I own a pretty decent size vinyl collection

i like the lemat. its got 9 shots in the cylinder and another larger round thats fired from in the center of those 9

i have heard it was common for the center one to be like a buck shot like situation \

the only downside is that it doesnt fire self contained rounds. it uses blasting caps and each round has to be loaded after black powder

but it is a gun in real life that has alt fire. not to many of those if you dont count attachments

dont believe me check the wiki. i know wiki but its not like cnn or bloomberg talks about guns

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeMat_Revolver
>>
>>30138340
Honestly i dont like the finish on mine. It looks too new. Id rather it be a little bit darker, i just wish there was something i could add without having to refinish the whole damn thing.

Also its not as accurate as id like, but Im not entirely sure if its my lack of skill, or the rifle. The bores pretty clean, though.

This guy gets it.
I love learning about the development history, manufacturing techniques and the people behind the older gun designs that shaped modern day arms. Imagining the work that had to go into building a swiss M1889 for example must've been an order of magnitude more involved then a modern AR platform, and you only really get an appreciation for that sort of precision craftsmanship by handling the old guns. The fact that you can shoot them too is the cherry on top

An enfield chambered in .30-06. Stamped for approval for WW1, made in 1918. Rifling is in fantastic condition. Apparently the dude I bought it off got it from an old lady who's husband passed and he owned it for 40-50 years.

When I pulled it apart and gave it a good cleaning the barrel, striker, the magazine, and a few other parts had a ton of cosmoline on them.

It's most definitely an M1917.

P14s were what Winchester, Remington and Eddystone (a company Remington owned) were making for the British.

The ordnance department decided instead of asking a bunch of factories to retool to make springfields, it was cheaper and quicker to just retool those factories making p14s to chamber them in .30-06.

He's kind of right though. After the early 80's almost everything became exclusively CNC'd. which isn't neccesarily bad as it can make precise parts at a much faster rate. But that leads to companies wanting to takemore and more shortcuts to cut costs and maximize profits until eventually, they end up like Cerberus Group. They don't give a fuck what they put out as long as you buy it and the money goes to their coffers.

As someone who owns a model 8, I completely understand why they stopped making them.

They are very finicky guns, any repairs are hard to stupid hard, and they are not super pleasant to shoot. Having the entire barrel recoil really throws off your aim.

An interesting historical piece and I wouldn't ever trade mine away, but they are rather picky.

You think modern production could get rid of the problems or is it literally the action? I'd imagine the bullet exits before cycling or is it a problem for follow up shots?
Honestly i like the look if they could make one with Delayed Roller blowback or DGI I'd figure it'd be better

It's an ugly pretty gun
>>
>>30150697
If they made it with a different action, it wouldn't be a model 8. Then what would be the point? It'd be like one of those plastic housings you drop a 10/22 action in, a sad imitation.

It is only a problem for follow up shots, mine is very accurate, but very picky on what ammo it likes. It likes hot loads and only specific bullets, or else it jams. When it jams, it tends to mangle the brass, which for 35 rem, is not great.

Well, Model 8s generally run for less than a thousand, and aren't super uncommon. A model 81 is basically the same thing with a few minor improvements, so knock yourself out.

Go for a 300 sav or a 35rem, otherwise you'll be pretty boned as far as finding ammo goes.
>>
>>30150607
There was some fairly deep pitting in at least one place though, about 3 or 4 inches from the muzzle. It would probably shoot reasonably straight, and the price was lower than a lot of others because of the bore. I think I'll go back for another look, they had the bolt in a draw or something while the rifle was on display but if everything matches I might pick it up.

It was a Winchester too, and I know Criterion makes new barrels so although it would cost more to eventually get it re-barreled if I did end up doing it I would get something that could really shoot.

Pardon the interruption, but I just scored this Federal Ordnance M98/85. I did some work for my father-in-law and he pulled it out of the gun safe and gave it to me. It's a Mauser (probably Spanish) that was imported by Federal Ordnance in the 1980s and retrofitted with a .308 winnie barrel. They scrubbed the original markings and stamped it with the great seal of the US, so original configuration is somewhat up for debate. It still has the proof case attached. I'm setting it up as a scout rifle with a long eye relief scope so I don't have to bend the bolt or make any other permanent modification. Apologies for shitty phone pic.

>tl;dr: scored a Mauser with a brand fucking new barrel
>>
>>30147540
So did Federal Ordnance, for several years in the 1980s. Not just 98s, though. Whatever Mausers they could import cheap. See >>30155334.

Now I have an Arisaka the someone bubbaed into a nice .30-06, a MAS 36 in 7.5 Frog, a Romanian 44 nugget, a Mauser with a cool crest, a JC Higgins bolt action .22lr, a PA-63, a Mossberg bolt action 12 gauge goose gun, a black powder 12 gauge SxS, my grandfather's .410 Mossberg Ranger shotgun, and my great-grandfather's .22 H&R revolver. One of these days I'll buy a newer rifle, but it'll be a while. Love the old stuff too much.

>>

>>
>>30140542
You can do a metric fuckton of differen things with a .30-06 if you're handloading for it. My converted Arisaka loves heavy loads. Max load of H335 + 150 grain Remmy psp bullets + Winnie brass = 1 ragged hole at 100 yards. And it'll handle hella light or hella heavy bullets, too.
>>
>>30151746
>>30151477
Adopted 1906. Original designation was .30-03, as the cartridge was designed in 1903.
>>
>>30138010
Reloading is easy and simple. Get a single stage press, calipers, neck sizing die (don't size the whole case for milsurp, they sometimes have sloppy chambers and your cases will last longer with just a neck die), something to measure powder by weight, and go for it. Start with the lowest recommended load for the powder/bullet combo you have in mind and step up 1/2 grain of powder at a time. Load three each. Shoot a group with each powder weight, waiting 2 minutes between groups. The tightest pattern is the amount of powder your gun likes best. Use it. Check for signs of pressure (busted cases, flat primers, et cetera) as you go up. My .30-06 likes max loads, my 7.5 Frog likes them in the middle.
>>
>>30155378
And I got it for putting in a wheelchair ramp for my mother-in-law, which I did with no expectation of any kind of payment. Cool move for a crotchety old fart. I just ordered a ton of cheap ammo and a scout scope setup. I'm gonna play with this one.

Majority of the Colts and their clones problems lie with the groove cut into the hammer to act as a safety. When a cap goes boom a little bit of the cap just loves to get caught on it.

JB weld and some sandpaper could have taken care of it.

That said, i like the notch, so i shoot my Navy clone like they did back in the day.

Hey buddy that's probably a Spanish 1916 Mauser. Built on the m93 action with 2 locking lugs and originally fired 7mm Mauser. There are 3 different patterns of the Spanish 1916. Yours is a LA gaurdia civil rifle converted to 7.62 nato. The under rifle sling mounts are the give away for LA gaurdia civil service.

That rifle was made for the 7mm Mauser cartridge and only has 2 locking lugs. The m98 Mauser has 3 lugs and wad made for 8mm. 98s a great for converting to other high pressure modern cartridges. Your 2 lug 93 action Mauser is a different story. Look up pressure differences in the 7mn Mauser Vs 8mm and 7.62 nato.

All this being said I would fire 7.62 nato in it but not. 308 Winchester. Preferably slightly under pressure handloads in 7.62 specs. They have the "same pressure and same dimensions" but that's not really true they're just very similar kind of like. 223/5.56. Ever hear of the. 223 wylde chamber? It's designed to handle pressure spikes caused by firing either ammo in the wrong chamber. End result is chamber that can safely handle both.

Tl;Dr it's a mauser 93 action. Spanish 1916 is the model rifle. Arsenal referb for Spanish "national Guard" service. Cool rifle and I want to add one to my Mauser collection soon. It's only got 2 locking lugs so be weary of higher pressure cartridges. Anyone that says anything about "soft steel" is an idiot. The 2 locking lugs is the issue that causes these Rifles to explode.

Forgot to mention they did a lot of mix and match stuff. Stock could have come off another action, no way to know. They proofed it at 150% .308 pressure, so standard .308 should be fine. I'll check for pressure signs when I start to handload for it, though. I'm careful about that shit.

I think that depends on where the traffic goes, and how often shitposting/retardation happens there outside of summer. There may not be much more shitposting, but we might notice the minor increases despite that.

Regardless, it still seems like the shitposting and retardation is worse in summer, at least to me.

S&W 455 MkII Hand Ejector. shipped back to the U.S. some time in the 1920's. Since .455 Webley was hard to come by in the States, many were either shaved to accept moon clips for .45acp or were rechambered in .45 Colt. This one was cut for moons. You can still shoot .455 if you modify a moon clip so that the cartridge headspaces properly.

History of a firearm is always interesting to me.

I'm all about the Mechanics.
All about the evolution of the firearm.
I fucking love it, Like it's my favourite thing about a gun.
It's fucking insane, these things are created in order to fling a piece of lead as accurately as possible using a chemical reaction, and the mechanics behind it to cycle a new round and discard the casing. Man it just gets me going.
I want to fucking BUILD these things.
All the little features about it,
we started with Muzzle loaders, ramming the powder down the barrel. And now we have electronically fired rounds that can empty an entire magazine before the recoil from the first round is felt..
>>
>>30155444
.30-03 and .30-06 are two different cartridges, both named for the year they were adopted by the military.
>>
>>30155334
you shouldnt use .308 in that. the spanish used 7.62x51 cetme at that time, which is a reduced 7.62x51 load. it might kaboom if you use .308.
>>
>>30164817
3 lugs, friend. Started life as 8mm.

>>30164801
Nawp.
>>
>>30137392
Yes. My 1915 Lee Enfield is my favorite rifle.
>>
>>30164817
7.62 cetme was for the early model cetme Rifles. Was designed to offer increased control on full auto. The round was only for that purpose. The bolt actions fired the nato load.

That being said,. 308 in a 1916 chambered in 7.62 nato is no Bueno. Different pattern Mauser with only two lugs and it started life as 7mm Mauser. I would fire 7.62 not. 308 from one. There are slight dimensional differences between the two and pressure spikes can be caused by loading in the wrong chamber. Even 7.62 nato has a much higher pressure than 7mm Mauser so it's still kind of questionable.

Anyways the Mauser in question has 3 lugs so all is good.

I did some looking into the history of the gun. Apparently almost all of those were made from Spanish #44 Mausers. My action looks like most of the pictures I see online purporting to be Spanish M44 Mausers. The Spanish Air Force used them. The action started life as an 8mm Mauser. Furniture on my stock matches the infamous FR-8 conversion with the original side sling mounts left in place and belly mounts added later. The length of the stock doesn't, though. It's a full 38 inches long. I'll keep looking at this particular rifle's history and see what I can come up with. I got a feeling it's largely going to be speculation. I also have a feeling it's a shame somebody pulled the shroud off the front sight. I ordered a bunch of cheap TulAmmo in .308 and a scout scope kit. When those get here, I'll take the rifle apart and check for hidden markings, put the scope on it, and go to the range. I'll post what I get in a thread here in a couple of weeks. It's a rifle with an interesting history and a clean bore. What more could a milsurp dork like myself want?
