Lots of tracking, and lots of torching villages.

I specialize more on Rhodesia and South Africa but a good book to read is The Terroir Fighters.

Basically, Tugas sent paratroopers and marines overseas to Guinea, Angola and Mozambique in order to fight communist guerrillas funded by chinese and soviets.

Angola and Mozambique were the bigger problems, after years of war, there was a coup on the Portuguese junta leader Salazar by a center-left wing group, that ordered all troops back and gave independence to the countries, thus whichever militia controlled the capital city by the independence date would be the legitimate government, in Angola we had the west-aligned UNITA and FNLA, and the combloc-aligned FAPLA.

Later in the war, FNLA would be wiped out, and in order to hold things, South Africa would deploy the SADF to aid UNITA during the Border War, in Mozambique the combloc-aligned Frelimo guerrilla controlled the nation after the Portuguese coup, then underground resistance worked with Rhodesian SAS on some ops to attack the communists.

Eventually, with almost zero western support, UNITA would give up the armed fight to become a political party and ultimately end around 2002. SADF pulled out of Angola after the Cuito Cuanavale due to political pressure and the N embargo, not the mention their own problems with Mandela and his terrorists.

Not very different to Rhodesia's story, basically west-aligned colonialism and resistance fighters fighting terrorists and governments back by China, those same communists that now run those countries and just let China get all their natural resources as a form of "payment" for the help they gave during the war.

Probably the only time the AR-10 was ever fielded.

Portuguese army gave old surplus Mausers to friendly locals in all countries.

Their main battle rifle was the G3, but Marines used the FAL and Paratroopers used the AR-10.
They also fielded MG42s and later MG3s, used some old T-6 Texan aircraft for CAS and their cavalry consisted mostly of Panhard AML60s and AML90s, oh, and some old M5 Stuarts.

My great uncle (in this picture) was one of the first going to Angola.

He died when his jeep went over a mine.

His son then went to Guine later in the war and came back all full of PTSD and the only thing he tells me about the war was that black pussy is warmer than white pussy and that he player soccer with the heads of the killed Rebels.

Oh he also had a shit ton of grenades that he took from the army and used to blow them up in the woods near our house.

Apparently, good enough for most Special Ops, Recon and Paratroopers to love and adopt it, trading their old G3s and FALs for it, they used to call it "espingarda Armalite", from what I've read on some reports they were kinda rare and in limited number too.

Breda M37, some old MGs were fielded by the early years and were attached to old trucks and pickups.

You can read about the armaments here, it's pretty complete:

How did Portugal last so long in Africa but get kicked out almost immediately in Goa?
>>
>>30103028
Flecha Commando with a captured AK.
>>
>>30103037
Short answer: Salazar refused to give back colonies, Portugal relied a lot on their colonies for having ports around the globe and resources, I don't blame them for that.
>>
>>30102983
They loved it, paratroopers and helicopter troops thought they were fantastic and accurate rifles. Does anyone have the photo of the AR-10 with ammunition next to it spelling out I owe my life to you in Portuguese?

>>30103037
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say it was probably due to it being closer Portugal and other colonies as well as higher morale, and the Indian army at that time had been trained to a British standard and the constant fighting with Sikh nationalists, Pakistan, and border skirmishes with the Chinese as well as being armed with British equipment of the time. Also if you look at the strength of the Portuguese and their actual causalities, it seems like the forces in Goa didn't intend on fighting till the death like Salazar intended.

On pic, german weapons that were captured by soviets during WW2 then fielded to communists guerrillas as form of support and technically not screaming soviet support, they did it a lot in African Wars.

>it seems like the forces in Goa didn't intend on fighting till the death like Salazar intended

That would have been a complete waste I guess. Perhaps it would have invoked some sympathy in the African campaigns, although those were also doomed to fail.
>>
>>30103228
The Danish company Madsen was eager to sell to almost anyone, their bolt action rifle, the M47, was advertised as avaliable in any caliber you wanted. It's a shame they went under, the M50 box SMG of theirs is the concept of the Sten perfected, and the Madsen LMG is essentially a F/A Martini Henri action, upside down. It was also the earliest LMG and had a very good reputation, seeing widespread use up until, now with those BOPE units.

>>30103263
That and, a small colony far, far away from home against Indira Gandhi, or colonies closer to home, supported by South Africa and Rhodesia, against small insurgencies. I doubt anyone was going to support the Portuguese in Goa, and the then brand new state of India was in a very interesting position, neither being aligned with the west or the east.

Successful use of cavalry was pretty interesting

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragoons_of_Angola

>In 1966, the Portuguese Army created an experimental horse platoon, to operate against the guerrillas in the high grass region of the Eastern Angola. Each soldier of this unit was armed with a G3 assault rifle to use in combat on foot, and with an automatic pistol to use while on horseback. The troops on horseback were able to operate in difficult terrain (unsuited for motor vehicles), were less vulnerable to landmines and had the advantage of being able to control the area around them, with a clear view over the grass (which foot troops did not have). Moreover, these unconventional troops created a psychological impact over the enemy, who were not accustomed to dealing with horse troops and had no kind of training or strategy with which to face them.
