Anyone know of any good books on the Soviet Afghan War?

"One Soldier's War" by Arkady Babchenko is a great read on both Chechen Wars and it'd be great to find a similar type book from a Russian's perspective tn Afghanistan.

he sang the praises of everything but the finish and trigger
>>
>>30104099

- stellar fundamentals (wear resistance, reliability, accuracy, etc.)
- some minor fit/finish and cosmetic issues, but if you're unlucky you might get an AK where the paint bubbles off
- shitty trigger, replace it or dremel that stupid lip off

Until we get more info on DDI, I rank Arsenals just below Vepr.

They're excellent rifles. It's just a shame that they cost $1000+, which I think is sacrilege considering the AK's original intended purpose of being an inexpensive, but reliable and effective rifle.

Top three foreign made AKs not including boutique expensive Rifle Dynamics-tier rifles or kit builds (which depending on your kit and who builds it could easily be the best for the money):

7.62x39:
SGL21, VEPR, SLR107fr in that order, with WASRs being the go to budget AK.

5.45x39:
SGL31, SLR104fr, and VEPR in that order, with SLR104fr being the go to 5.45 rifle.

Well I managed to find an SLR-107FR at my local gun store. Problem is, it is the 107-36 model with that horrible quad rail setup and they want 1250 OTD after taxes. Good news is it is also very clean and has zero canting to it.

Should I pick it up now or wait for however long it takes for another shipment of rifles to get into the US?
>>
>>30104803
Tough call, I say buy it, sell the quadrail.

Extra $100-150 now isn't bad insurance.
>>
>>30104455
you should drop the SGLs because those are Saiga's that are converted and no longer made/imported
>>
>>30104936
Doesn't mean they're not still out there for around the same price as SLRs.
>>
>>30104909

That was what I was thinking but how in demand is that quad rail set up though? The zenitco and ultimak combo is so much better.

$1250 is a lot of cash for an AK.
>>
>>30104288

erm. they ARE cheap commie rifles. when the AR-15 is now pound for pound better and cheaper than your historically cheap AK rifle, something is fucked. I could take that same $1250 and buy a BCM rifle that would out perform the SLR-107 any day of the week.

ARSENAL TEST UPDATE 3K ROUNDS

I too noticed the ridiculous fucking flash from the normal AK-74 brake with some 7N6.

I was fucking flash-blind right in my center of vision trying to see targets early morning one day. Purchased a manticore nightshroud, which isn't as effective as I had hoped.

Here's a WEBM of the nightshroud Mk2.

The AK is an M90NP, no.16 off the line and clearly they hadn't got their shit together completely yet. The handguards were a shitshow and the retainers was fucked up beyond. So it became what you see now. For those wondering or feeling the rage building the optic is stolen off of a SMAW and fitted to an ACOG base.

Well /akg/ I might have fucked up.

>take wife out for some memorial day weekend shooting innawoods
>been bringing her up on a steady diet of .22LR shooting out of the Ruger 10/22
>she's been asking me for a while if she can shoot my AK
>finally decide to let her give it a shot

Now mind you she's never shot something like this before, so I decided to be cautious.

>set her up on a bench and a rest
>make sure her ear and eye protection is nice and snug
>make sure she's shouldering it properly
>everything seems perfect
>tell her to try for a target I set up
>she fires
>she lets out a little scream, she wasn't expecting it to be so concussive
>have her take her hands off the rifle, take off my ear protection to ask if she's okay
>hear a strange rustling/hissing
>look down where she's sitting
>puddle around the bench, dribbling over the side
>scared so much she started wetting her pants, badly

She was super embarrassed, but said it wasn't my fault. However I'm afraid she might never want to shoot AKs or other salt rifles ever again.

I actually went to a local thrift shop today and picked up "Zinky Boys: Soviet Voices from the Afghanistan War" by Svetlana Alexievich

There were a couple others I've been eyeing on Amazon and the one you recommended was one of them, but in all honesty I'm more into firsthand accounts and memoirs of war (much like "One Soldier's War" and "With the Old Breed" and others along those lines) rather than things that read like textbooks. They're just more easy to relate to when coming from other people than when it's just fact after fact.

>>30109885
This. The AR is America's baby no matter how you look at it and, in the US, it's easier to maintain an ammo and parts source for than an AK, regardless of scenario.

>>30109902
Put it this way: the only weapon I own that has a slower bullet would be my 10/22, and that's got a magnified optic on it, plus I don't trust it to kill someone because I'm not an ultrafudd. 7.62x39mm is a slow, fat bullet that's far more likely to get lodged in something than 5.56x45mm or 5.45x39mm.

>>30109905
ARs? Yeah, if you get the proper parts and take the time to learn what you're doing you can swap barrels pretty quickly. QB over in /arg/ constantly rearranges his ARs when bored because it really doesn't take all that much effort. There are also ARs with quick change barrel systems (like the DOLOS) and all sorts of other shit. If you're talking about the AK, however, then the answer is no.
>>
>>30109954
Why do you like DDI? New AK buyer myself (graduation money) so my main concerns are accuracy and reliability
>>
>>30109954

I'm thinking I've been rused. Anyway, I hope you are specifically using a under powered 7.62x39 round because the 7.62 is known for it's high penetration over 5.56/5.45. The AK-103 was basically created for the need for more penetration.
>>
>>30109985

probably the most accurate AK rifles are DDI. Not the most tough but they get the job done as range toys and home defense rifles.

5.45 is also the more accurate AK round so I'd be looking at a DDI 74 from Classic Firearms or an SLR-104.

They've had a great track record in the past of repairing all of the AKs that Waffen Werks shat out before going out of business, which to me shows strong customer solidarity that wasn't required since the only affiliation between them and WW was that they bought WW's machines. Other than that, their finish is pretty damn nice, they seem to do a good job at picking out and using good parts kits, their prices aren't anywhere near as high as Arsenal's, and the only bad shit I've heard about them is the owner producing top tier bantz and calling people who illegitimate gripes losers and virgins.

I've not had the chance to shoot mine yet, but my ammo arrives Tuesday and I'll probably do some light shooting with it on Sunday and I'll report back how it handles then, but everything I've read so far and seen so far leads me to believe that it'll be a fine rifle.

It's really not so much that I love DDI so much as I dislike WASRs. WASRs are a decent rifle at $500 and below, but they don't seem to be in that price range anymore. The finish on them is atrocious, they've had major problems in the past with canted sights, bent barrels, and all sorts of other whack shit, and obviously muh mag wobble because they're converted magwells.

WASRs, in my opinion, are very much the new Mosin/SKS. They've got a fan base that hypes them up and recommends them at every opportunity and everything that's more expensive is shit for an obscure reason or is overpriced and full of unnecessary features like having a finish that doesn't scrape off when you rub your finger nail against it.

>>30110018
>7.62x39mm is known for high penetration over 5.56mm
No, that's a straight up lie. 7.62x39mm is a significantly slower, significantly heavier round. It's better at transferring energy than 5.56x45mm is, therefore stopping faster than 5.56, which is why you see SF soldiers using and not standard Russian troops. 7.62x39mm has a very, very narrow window where it's better than 5.45 and 5.56.

no. most parts that wear out in an AK are cause for just trashing the rifle (if you even manage to wear out a quality AK)

if you are just going to the range or defending your home, DDI is perfectly fine.

Physically a slower higher projectile with more mass will penetrate more then a faster projectile with less mass, unless he wants to dispute the laws of physics, 5.45 offers no advantage over 7.62 in semi automatic rifles.

The problem with that idea is that M43 is terrible at yawing and fragmenting in flesh targets, which is why 5.56 stops rather quickly in ballistics gel tests compared to 7.62x39. That being said, with this being my current argument, I can already feel the hole I've argued myself into in terms of penetration. Maybe I'm wrong about penetration on 7.62x39, but I know I'm not wrong about fragmentation and yawing for 5.56.

So by that you mean like 5.56 or 5.45?

I'd almost be willing to believe that for 5.56, but 5.45 still seems very much like a penetration-happy round.

Bad meme

I've shot through a 6x6 with XM193 and it soars right through it, exit hole almost as clean as the entry. What you're saying might be true with something like Hornady TAP or V-MAX but the umbrella statement that 5.56 an 5.45 will fragment in drywall is misleading.

Not that I've seen.
There's the MaxRounds 20 round drum for Vepr 12s but it's very expensive (~$650) and the vaporware 25 round drum SGM has been trying to make.
Other than that the only drums for 12g are for Saigas (rock and lock) and won't work in a magwell fitted Vepr 12/Saiga.

>also plum furniture for 7.62x39 ak
Any plum furniture that will fit a 74 will fit an AKM (As long as it's for the same type of rear trunnion and receiver; folder or fixed, stamped or milled.)

I'm in the USA, it was a Russian gun. I was pretty sure he had no paperwork for it even if it wasn't a deact.

BTW is it legal to take down a deact and use the parts in another gun? How about if I were hypothetically to weld shut the third hole, could I legally use the receiver?

Basically, yeah, though the original argument was about penetration in terms of home defense.

That being said, they'll all kill people so long as you hit them, but what matters is how easy ammo is to find, and you really can't argue that 5.56 is the easiest ammo to find in the US.

5.56 being common also means it's the first thing to fly off the shelf in the event of a panic buy or disaster event. It's commonality only benefits in The Road style jerkoff fantasies where everyone you see is an enemy that you kill and then scavenge for ammo. As far as that realm goes, 5.56's main advantage is that it's produced domestically and imports being cut off won't drastically affect availability. The only ammo you can count on is the ammo you already have.
>>
>>30116225
In the case of a "no fun allowed" foreign ammo import ban, could you rebate a 5.45 AK to make it take 5.56?

I agree with this, but I'm more talking after-the-fact than loot and scavenge. Given how valuable bullets would be in any SHTF scenario, you can guarantee that 5.56 production will continue so long as companies that produce it can maintain capital for production. If shit ever fell to pieces, all that good shit that comes from overseas? What are the chances that you'll get anymore of that? Once the supply dries up, it dries up.

That being said, all of this shit is out in fantasy land, so arguing over what gun is the best to buy for SHTF is a bit daft in my opinion.

Any one else here load up some AK mags and then realize you don't want them loaded and you're too lazy to take the rounds out one by one so you just take the floor plate off and let the guts spill out?
>>

Why would you not want your mags loaded?

Took my Flandre built Bulgarian parts kit 74 out for its first shooting at the range.

6 Magazines of 7n6 later and everything forward of the front trunnion was hot enough to burn skin. Even the wood handguards were uncomfortably hot to hold.

I wasn't even firing it fast. I even fired other weapons in between magazines on my 74.

Will plum furniture remedy the heat problem?

The communists would have lost the war if it got hot. The slavic hordes would have not be able to hold their rifles.

Steel is an oddity in that velocity kills it, you can burn through steel plates with varmint rounds. This is not at all related to performance in drywall, other common building materials, or even flesh.

I understand it isn't, I'm merely pointing out that I don't need to argue with the laws of physics because M193 already did that for me and won. It's an example whether you like it or not, and you can't reduce it down to "w-well this doesn't fit my unstated requirements, therefore it doesn't count."

That being said, if you've got a video of 5.56 vs 7.62 drywall penetration I'd be more than happy to watch it and find out which stops faster.

>>30118758
That's probably because the Troy Alpha handguard has a much greater distance from the barrel than an AK handguard. Your AR likely also has a thicker barrel than your AK74, which means heat dissipation is better. AKs have always been noted for having issues with heating up, but it's nothing that can't be fixed by a good pair of gloves or holding the gun by the mag or by a foregrip. It's not pleasant, but since when was the AK ever designed with user comfort in mind?
