There's still plenty of stuff we can own. The bullet button and kydex wrap solutions allow a great deal of modern sporting rifles, albeit in a compromised fashion. Sourcing uncommon magazines in 10-round capacity can be a little tricky too. Off roster handguns can be purchased as well, there are many that are simply exempt from needing DOJ approval and there's still a few ways around it if you have money to blow.

At the end of the day there's also plenty of fun to be had with bolt-action rifles, pump-action shotguns and single-action revolvers as well. Plus the older, earlier self-loaders like Garands, M1As, FN49s are still totally legal without resorting to any loopholes.

The big worry is that all of this is perpetually subject to change. The cocksuckers in our legislature seem to have limitless time to waste finding ways to legislate every crumb of 2A rights away instead of un-fucking the economy or the roads. But as it sits RIGHT NOW it's actually gotten a lot better in the last 10-5 years, a lot of people are getting into guns, there's a lot of businesses catering to our interests and there is an actually effective political and legal counter-offensive that's pushing against all the horseshit we're being saddled with.

In fact the legislature is drafting the most heinous legislation they can think of knowing full well that it's unconsitutional as a giant "fuck you" to calguns and the NRA-ILA in order to force them to waste money fighting it all in court for decades. Hopefully it'll be brought to an end with a big ruling and SCOTUS just giving CA a final definitive smackdown.

Not exactly. Nothing has passed yet, it's just working it's way through the system and several provisions have been abandoned along the way. It's still up to Jerry Brown to sign and he vetoed the same thing last time.

IMO the bullet button ban is looking likely since it is functionally a loophole in existing legislation that bypasses the intent of the law (banning scary-looking ARs and AKs, since they still look scary even with the BB) and that's going to suck since we won't have many options for legally getting whatever modern thing comes next. One silver lining is that anything with a BB will be eligible to be regged as an AW and then you can take the BB off.
