yeah, they do offer level 4 but you gotta ask, not sure why but probably has to do with the cost per plate and most guys who need the level 4 are military or LEO so they'll be asking anyways.

Honestly, plates aren't the most practical anyways. More centralized weight superior to your navel or center of gravity plus a small protection area equals WTF. Soft protection is more practical :

Faggots will just have to accept the fact that some people accept the risk of not wearing body armor. If had a choice of only one type of ballistic protection I would choose helmet any day of the week. Besides in my opinion plates are meme tier. Fragmentation is a bigger killer and soft armor covers more area than just the cardiac box in a line perpendicular to the hajji and his AK.

Fragmentation is not a risk that civilians actually come into contact with. In a "civilian" situation, GSWs are a far bigger threat. As a civilian, focusing on fragmentation is pretty pants on head.

Years ago I got an old Marine OTV "free" because my boss deemed it too ragged to sell. [I worked at a surplus store]

So I diddled it up over the years for paintball, airsoft, costume shit and recently I've thought maybe I can actually make it useful.

I meant plates by themselves. People are concerned with less weight but still wanting something that protects even if it is marginal in terms of physical coverage. I remember when people were shitting themselves over MTVs which led to people shrugging off protection for comfort. I blame bleeding heart congress and moms of America.

>>30078559
>Fragmentation is not a risk that civilians actually come into contact with. In a "civilian" situation, GSWs are a far bigger threat. As a civilian, focusing on fragmentation is pretty pants on head.

I know that civvies and the civie world rarely deals with fragmentation. But what type of GSWs are you talking about? Most in this country are caused by lower velocity pistol rounds which any ii to iiia vest will stop. Even the old PASGT vest would stop most pistol rounds. Having a hard plate because of ranger firefight wet dreams doesn't take away from the fact that soft armor is actually more practical be it Detroit or Baghdad.
>>
>>30078660
Any SAPI cut plate, probably any plate you want, they aren't form fitted they just sit in the bottom of the carrier IIRC. These vests are trash by the way. Don't waste your time

>>30078678
Right, I see your point, but if something has escalated to the point that you need to strap gear on in the first place, I would want to maximum protection possible, and quite frankly I would not feel safe with IIIA Soft Armor at all, even a relatively domestic round like 7.62x39 or 5.56 will punch right through it.
>>
>>30078685
It /was/ free, and I'm turning poor so I'll stick with it for now.
I wasn't actually thinking about buying plates, I was just curious.

Every PC/Vest I see in these threads looks leauges more comfortable than this thing but eh, I'll live with it.

I'm currently trying to find some used side "plate holders" so I can at least get more real estate; I can't attach anything to the backside of it.

The only new shit we sold was Condor and Blackhawk though, so any of the good stuff we'd get from GIs. And my boss was the most penny-pinching sob I ever met. Luckily he sold surplus cheap so I'd get unused ESS goggles for like $10.
>>
>>30078710
If it gets to the point that rifles or carbines enter the game then yeah plates become worth it. But alot of people here suck the dick of ballistic plates. I can tell you that wearing an Interceptor and plates sucks ass from personal experience. There is a point where too much protection hinders you and exhausts you mentally and physically.

>>30078769
>its ok guys he has to be trolling

No, it actually has to deal with the axle that people wrap their heads around. Cranial protection is the most important. People get locked into "plates plates plates gotta have plates because muh SF has them" and they ignore the most common mechanisms of injury. Once again:

they are described as composite plates and buoyant which leads to me to believe that they are made of both UHMWPE and some ballistic fabric.
I don't know what kind of testing was done on them but being completely drop-proof and having "performance unaffected by extreme cold or hot environments" sounds extremely sketchy and way too good to be true.
who is using this company for armor?
>>
>>30078925
it's unlikely but it could come in handy one day. it's a parallel to owning a gun for protection.
>>
>>30078925
I was in the army so long that life without gear would feel wrong. I would go to sleep with the nagging sense that I had forgotten to do something.

I find the act of organizing, cleaning, and maintaining gear to be very soothing. Not much puts me more at ease and gives me a better sense of accomplishment than sitting down with a beer, laying out all my gear, and checking through it to make sure it's GTG.

I'm not planning for any specific thing. I'm not a militiaman or a prepper in the traditional sense. I use my gear in various setups where it feels appropriate. I go to the range or hike with pieces of it. Sometimes I load up in a plate carrier and do drills. Again, not because I foresee some imminent social collapse, but because the feel of shooting with armor on and moving with that weight on is something that is familiar to me, and something which I want to keep familiar. It makes me feel whole.
>>
>>30078946
>who is using this company for armor?
RCMP ERT, RCMP, Edmonton City police, some Military dudes who buy their own armor. EMS for his stab proof stuff
he has test plates in the shop, ones hes melted and they still stopped rounds, ones that have taken 25 rounds of 5.56 without fail. I really need to go out and buy a plate and shoot it to really see but still.

opscore ballistic and crye airframes are the other standard choices in high-cut helmets. the mtek flux is a newer entry that I haven't heard much about yet but supposedly it's very light

So I'm curious:

Does the military dictate what plate carriers their soldiers can have or not have? Can regular soldiers pick their own or is it issued?
I'm just curious since it seems a lot of these photos always have different people in a big array of different carriers.
Like is the military contract for plate carriers just a whole smathering of different makers?

In years past, you wore your issue vest that also had Lvl 3 soft armor. Then once the soldiers plate carrier(giant piece of shit) came out. Not long after that people started using their own personally purchased carriers. It's really all dependent on the unit

>>
>>30080884
It depends. For the vast majority of soldiers, they use the issued armor or plate carrier. Usually this is from a small pool of models. For the US Army, the majority of troops wear the IOTV full armor, with deployed soldiers in specific areas wearing the KDH plate carrier.

On /k/ you get a skewed picture of how it is because special operations are way over represented, and because you see a lot of peoples' personal gear.

*Some* conventional soldiers, in some situations can get away with using personal plate carriers, but it is dependent on having an accommodating command, which is something of a rarity. Commanders who allow personal gear can dictate the details of what makes, models, features, colors/patterns, or layouts are allowed.

When I'm camping I usually just bring 1L and then rarely need to refill it from a stream, but everyone seems to bring at least 2L in their gear.

If it looks issued, how would they even know?

When I was in Afghanistan, I used my own personal lvl IV plates that I had purchased, inside the issue frag vest.

Think of the reasons why you are seen, the same reasons apply to unissued kit.

Contrast
Silhouette
Shape
Size
Movement
Noise
Shadow

Your non-issued kit needs to blend in with your issued kit. Not talking about, bragging, or drawing attention to your non-issued kit helps too. Not that any of you are going to do that, because most people who buy extra kit are insecure faggots and will constantly seek attention and validation for their purchase.

Unless your command is ok with aftermarket vests, it's not something you're going to wear. If everybody is wearing an IOTV and you show up with an LBT, it will be noticed. Unless your unit has blind first line supervisors.

Many commands lock down wearing different vests to stop from having to eyeball every aftermarket vest a Joe buys. If there is no official guidance on aftermarket gear and somebody buys a vest and gets away with it, suddenly more people will. And one person might be sensible, but other Joes might go and start stripping off side plates or buying a recon harness with one plate or something stupid. The rules make management easy and uniform to apply.

Some commands will allow exceptions, but they generally write up their own rules on make, model, color, and/or features beforehand to prevent stupidity.

Plus, stateside, units tend to be less lenient. My unit deployed with 90% of people wearing aftermarket plate carriers, but in the states we wore regulation IOTVs to every mixed unit training event.

you can get away with soft armor at most under a shirt.
you'll need a jacket or sweater for a plate.

You ever have problems with the pressure pad switch cable coming out ever so slightly on your DBAL where it won't read the switch?

I've noticed that the Surefire switch cable connectors don't fit particularly snug inside DBALs and sometimes recoil from the rifle is enough to knock them loose.

I've since ditched trying to use Surefire Dual Switches on my DBAL-I3.

Easily. Paired against the class 3 ATIPAL it's essentially what feature-set you would prefer. ATIPAL-C is really only worth buying if you don't know about the PERST-3, don't trust Russians, or would rather have American brand recognition on your gun.

PERST-3 has 5mW less on max power but it has digital dimming for lots of different power levels for both red and IR lasers. Also the illuminator on the PERST-3 is much better. ATIPAL weighs less. (213 grams vs 250 grams ) PERST-3 has aluminum housing. PERST-4 is a good budget option that weighs almost the same as a PEQ-15 and has 4mW IR/Red dual slaved lasers. PEQ's have better water rating. PERSTs aren't really supposed to be submerged.

hey so i did some testing and have discovered that the single grenade pouches on the 81 are much bigger. the 56 doesn't fit my 6 inch bandage or my extended radio without an extra strap.

i like the rig overall, the water proof pocket is neat but the strapping materiel is different or at least less broken in. its not as comfortable and it feels rougher. if i was carrying frags in the pockets it would be nice to have a spot for four of them where i knew they wouldn't disappear but i don't really think its worth the trade off of 60 rounds when i'm never going to hold a frag grenade in my life. I think that i might use this one for modding projects. either attaching it to a spear balcs or putting molle where the grenade pockets are.

>>30092780
I opted for a lighter helmet with the high profile setup to offset the weight of plates and such. It can be used for any setup obviously, and that would be my go-to most likely anyway. I use the first helmet for work on occasion hence the NVG mounts. The other is for mounting a light.

I opted for more coverage in the second setup because the kit itself is lighter, so I could afford a little extra weight.

I prefer to have a helmet if I am in kit. It makes it so much easier to keep shit out of your eyes or catching your eyepro, charge through underbrush, prevent hitting your head, keeping your head dry in the rain, and so on. Its really quite handy. There's really no feeling like the psychological boost you get from having a dry head in heavy rain. I can be drenched forever as long as my head and feet are dry. Feels like a million bucks.

ill post a pic here in a minute
>>
>>30093275
Swishy like sound? Not really. They breath well and are hard wearing. I've had them for 3 years and use them regularly on multi day hikes and random range stuff. The internal knee pads are great and don't float out of place to badly.

They also don't look super crazy tactical for hiking either.

Here it is. I don't know if I'm just fat or what but how small is it supposed to be? Covering your chest wise

>>30093365
It's my first piece of gear so I can't say much. It appears to be high quality and it's comfortable

usually the rule of thumb is your plates should cover you nipple to nipple and from your collar bones down to your solar plexus. the carrier will obviously add a bit of bulk to that.

is the carrier too tight or too big? what is the problem?

do you have plates yet?

no plates yet. pink is my nipples and belly button. the red is where the plates would sit.

maybe i just imagined it would be bigger
>>
>>30093529
It's a little small on you. The belly button doesn't really matter. You want the height adjusted so the top edge of the plate is at your suprasternal notch. Remember, your most important organs and major blood bearing vessels (so far as your chest is concerned) are in the high chest, you need the top edge of the plate to cover the aorta.

you want to be able to move your arms and be able to touch your opposite shoulder but you also want full coverage. I have actually heard of people wearing small sized body armor plates and carriers for added mobility.

he thought it was a good idea to have a bent plate for women. for the reasons stated in that picture and because a bend in the plate would funnel rounds into the apex of the bend its a fucking retarded idea.

that pc looks perfectly sized to me. you could get medium or large plates. it really depends on whats comfy for you.

i see. thanks for the help, i guess i imagined they would be bigger. thats a good spot right there or should i make it higher?

Why don't people like the IOTVs

Seem to be the best for coming verge and modularity with the removable shoulders, groun and all that. They are cheap too compared so some of these other carriers.
