Viable? Yes. Preferred? No. 12 gauge anything is kick ass for home defense, so I'd still probably prefer that to a handgun, but you'd be much better off with a pump action or semi auto shotgun.

No. Shotguns for home defense are fucking stupid. Think about it; it's your home, is it not? Do you not respect the valuables and furnishings in your home? Surely you do, seeing as how you're prepared to defend it with lethal means.

The spread of shotgun pellets will destroy all of the shit within its range inside your house. It's much more sensible to choose a weapon with regular rounds, as to localize and minimize any collateral damage.

I can't tell if you're trolling or stupid. Shot from a shotgun doesn't spread as quickly as you think it does. It's about an additional 1 inch spread per yard traveled, so at max in a home you'd deal with a 1-5 inch pattern.

There is more than one shotgun.

Better than no gun at all and two shots of buckshot/slug will do the job

But unless you live in Ausfalia, there is no reason to get a coach gun for the purpose of home defense over a good pump action shotgun. A pump will be cheaper, hold more rounds, and can be modified for a variety of other purposes with a little bit extra money for barrels or sights

I bought a coachgun because I always wanted one. Being that it was my first shotgun, and at the time my only pistol was a Hi-Point .45 (given to me, don't judge), I thought it'd be designated the home defense gun, and I bought some #4 buckshot

Some time passed and I acquired more guns, then I realized a pump action, which would cost almost half what the coachgun did, which would double my capacity, would have made way more sense. Although I did buy the coachgun essentially for novelty, so I still have it, and figured out when broken down it fits in a ukulele case. But my realization still stands.

That said, my HD go-to is now a 4" S&W Model 10.

Not OP, but, capacity being the same, would a pump or semi be better? For a dedicated HD gun, I'm thinking either a good old Mossberg, a Dagger SAP-6 (11rds, but strange pump system) or an LA K-12, a bullpup semi 12ga that closely resembles our Type 97s.

There isn't much more lethal than 12 gauge that a civilian can own. I'm not sure about you, but if I'm shooting at someone then I mean to kill them. I'd take 9 shells of 12 gauge out of my m590a1 over 30 rounds of poodle shooter out of an ar15.

If that gun came from the factory with the pistol grip installed then it's still an NFA item called "other", which only requires a $5 tax stamp. If it originally had a stock then either it's either an illegal SBS or something paid for the $200 tax stamp.
