Ruger Gunsite Scout in 5.56 or Rossi model 92 in 357 magnum?
>>
Marlin 1894 in 44mag/spl or 1895 .45-70

My buddy has a Ruger GSR in 308. It's...okay. If you want an iron-sight center-fire rifle I think the CZ 550 line would be the best value, with Sako or Sauer's being more top-line.

>Ruger GSR .308 is ok
What? I mean, it's not a premium rifle by any means, but it shoots >1" with quality ammo when I do my part.

OP, you're gay for comparing two totally different guns without what you wanted them for. What do you want out of your purchase?
>>
>>30036296
I want a dependable bush rifle that handles easy and shoots affordable ammo. Both 5.56 and 357 are readily available to me. My problem here is that the ruger is more expense but has higher capacity and better accuracy and power, but I have a huge boner for lever guns and pistol caliber carbine.
>>
>>30036318
Also the Rossi is cheaper, but there's still the stigma of it being made by Taurus, its parent company.

Uh, OP what are you going to use it for? Hunting, target? Are you going to want glass?

Is irons a requirement?
>>
>>30036318
>>30036325
I can think of the same amount of pros and cons for each so I guess that's why it's kinda hard
>>
>>30036318
I hate to be the one to say this, but just get an AR, especially if mag capacity isn't restricted.
If it is, or you don't want an AR, they make the GSR in .223/5.56 too.
>>
>>30036341
I'm Californian :(
>>
>>30036296
His was >$900 for a bolt action 308 rifle that was very heavy and the bolt was rough as hell (you had to muscle that bitch around) and I've heard reports of them shooting ~3MOA. I'm not one to push for pricey guns, but when you're paying that much when there's other options for significantly less...

Sorry, I don't mean to bash it; I can appreciate the attraction of a rugged bolt rifle for the bush.

Me too and I have both.
Since it sounds like you want to hunt or whatever, just get a GSR. Tikka Battue and CZ 550 are other options, but I like the Mauser action.

Yeah I'm going to go with that. There's a reason lever actions were replaced by bolt actions
>>

>>30036351
There are other semi-auto carbines in .223/5.56 available here, anon, or you can try fucking with a bullet button. You can get a used Mini-14 that'll shoot well enough to drop a deer for $600 give or take.

There are also several bolt guns in .223/5.56 that'll do the job, and for your purposes I'd get a Savage Axis or other el-cheapo fugly rifle that shoots 1 inch groups all day. Well under $500, won't care that you scratched it on whatever bullshit, will last forever...or until you can afford a better one.

Look at Cz, Howa, Ruger, Weatherby, Savage, etc. I wouldn't bother with Ruger's Scout because it is overly expensive, especially in 5.56
>>
>>30036445
>>30036203
Not OP but I to looking for something similar. I want ready available or cheap ammo gun, (thats the thing you spend the most on right?) Already have a ruger 10/22. She is a fun gun.

-CZ 527
-Rossi 357 or Ruger 77/357
-or some bolt action .223

Are the Ruger 77/357 any good?
>>
>>30036351
Get a Springfield Scout.
It's basically the California Standard Issue Rifle

You are not a true Californian unless you own at least one.

If you are going to bitch about ammo prices consider surplus also a .308 is good for hunting and tactical uses so practice with 200 rounds a month and the other times when you just want to plink, use a .22 lr. even with rationing limits of one box and price increases, a single 550 round box should satisfy your need to just fill the air with lead, powder and dakka noise.
>>
>>30037817
What if I want to practice 201 rounds a month?
>>
>>30036203
Rossi 92

So much fun
>>
>>30037856
Any good bolt action 357?
>>
>>30037497
what are these el-cheapo fugly rifles?

Like Mossberg ATL 100?
>>
>>30036318
if you want a dependable bush rifle you want something that will dependably drop things you will encounter in the brush beyond varmints. should be asking about ruger scout 308 vs 30 30 lever action.
>>
>>30036445
Came here to say this.
Go with the .223 version if you want more choices for good ammo/reloading. See that it is a new model and not the 1-in-12 bbl.

I don't suppose a Zastava m85 would be a good alternative? A couple anons have suggested this rifle in 7.63x39 and it's held my attention for quite awhile. Good first rifle?

The Rossi if you want fun, the Ruger if you're serious. Either will make a good truck gun.

The Ruger uses single stack 10.round proprietary magazines. It doesn't even use Mini 14 magazines. If you want a bolt action .223, you might consider the Mossberg MVP. It takes standard AR mags.
>>
>>30039441
how heavy are those?

>>
>>30039441
The ruger mags are not proprietary they are accuracy international magazines and are used in a number of bolt action rifles that uses a external magazine, they originally tried m14 mags but could not get them to work well enough so they went with a single stack not proprietary magazine.
>>
>>30039487
I hope the come different buttstock. I would get a Steyr Scout looking butstock
>>
>>30036203
One review I saw of the Gunsite Scout (think it was the .308) reported pretty mediocre accuracy. That just may have been a sample quirk though.
I've heard of lots of problems with the magazines. Be sure to investigate that if you consider it.
I handled one at a gun shop and wasn't impressed. The general quality didn't seem to justify the price, though YMMV. Also consider if you really need a muzzle brake on a bolt action rifle. They are incredibly noisy.
>>30036318

You can make a scout rifle with any rifle that can support a rail and aperture sights. XS Sights makes nice aperture sights/rails for Marlin lever actions.

Henry "the long ranger"
$1000+ .223/.243/.308

No info on the twist.
>>
>>30039799
I think the mediocre accuracy for the GSR was due to not having a free floating barrel. The newer ones now have that which has improved accuracy

You might be able to. Looking at it, the 5.56 takes AR-15 mags, the .308 model takes both AR-10 and M1A mags.

Two options for less than $35 if I remember right, shop around they are not proprietary.
