Any submariners on here? More specifically people on boomers. My dad was on a fast attack and he tells me it sucked the whole time. What is life as part of a boomer crew like?
>>
>>30021904
Being on a submarine sucks. It's cramped, they fuck with the air, and you get locked in a torpedo tube if you're the newest guy.
>>
>>30021927
>the fuck with the air

How so?
>>
>>30021964
They keep Oxygen at 19% to reduce the risk of fires, I never really got used to it so was always tired.
>>
>>30022017
That sounds shitty, are women still not allowed on subs?
>>
>>30022017

That's like, only %5 less oxygen than sea level atmosphere, right?

Does it even work?

I think that it would increase the possibility of accidents by fucking with the crew.
>>
>>30021927
Do you ever get any sweet mermaid poon?
>>
>>30022039
>are women still not allowed on subs?
No idea anymore, I am no longer serving and no longer care.

>>30022069
>Does it even work?
We still get the odd fire but I imagine things would be a lot worse with more oxygen.
>>
>>30022139
Of course. They totally don't drag you into the abyss when your guard is down. Trust me.
>>
>>30022179
What exactly did you do on the sub?
>>
>>30022069
>That's like, only %5 less oxygen than sea level atmosphere, right?

Depends on the pressure inside.

The atmosphere at large is just under 21% oxygen. So 19% means almost a tenth of the oxygen is missing. That'll have some impact on fire hazards, but if it's a meaningful one or not, I have no idea. I think I've heard that increasing overall oxygen levels to around 25% (+25%) does make a significant difference at least, with that being about the upper range for what the atmosphere could get to before massive forest fires put a stop to furtehr increases.

But what really matters isn't the percentage oxygen, but the partial pressure. With 21% oxygen and 1atm of air pressure, the partial oxygen pressure is 0.21atm, while 19% oxygen and 1atm of pressure, we get 0.19atm of oxygen.

So if we have regular air, but the pressure drops to about 0.9atm, then we get 0.19atm of oxygen. That's supposedly normal pressure about 1km above sea level, and I think a really massive low pressure weather zone at sea level.

Alternatively, we can take that submarine air and crank up the total air pressure to about 1.11atm, and get a partial oxygen pressure around 0.21atm.

So to know how much oxygen we really have in there, we must know both the oxygen percentage, and the total pressure. Which might not be entirely constant. Though as far as I can recall, your body isn't terribly sensitive to changes in oxygen levels. If someone's feeling tired, gets headache,s and so on then it's far more likely that the problem is excess CO2 (or something that isn't supposed to be in the air at all), not a shortage of oxygen.
>>
>>30022323

That's a very detailed post.

You're telling me submarines can actually maintain a partial vacuum?? That's impressive considering the vacuum will decrease safe diving depth.

I can't even imagine the bullshit math involved in calculating that shit.
>>
>>30021904
My dad was on a few Boomers as well as fast attacks. From what little he's told me, it sucked there too but you might have a little more space and don't have to duck as much.
>>
>>30021927
>and you get locked in a torpedo tube if you're the newest guy.

that would make me shit my pants I'd rather be shot in the head then be in a sub
>>
>>30022902
I'm on a boomer. It's shitty in its own ways. We go 3 months out to sea with no port calls or anything. Fast attacks go 6-9 months but get port calls.
>>
>>30022872
>You're telling me submarines can actually maintain a partial vacuum??

No. I was showing you how different oxygen percentages and total pressures can give you the same partial oxygen pressure.

>I can't even imagine the bullshit math involved in calculating that shit.

A basic understanding of how fractions and percent work is all you need, because that's all there is to it.
>>
>>30021904
Boomer sucks like fast attack but you're out to sea longer

Not likely to be full integration of women on subs any time soon just for logistics reasons, not enough berthings and heads to keep them separated from males like decent americans should be
I believe they have been letting female officers on subs but i thinks its on a trial basis
>>
I always wondered what showers are like on subs or aircraft carriers, what do you negros do in down time? Are you allowed to have a phone?
>>
>>30023170
I might be wrong trust
>>30023140
>>
>>30023173
>I always wondered what showers are like on subs or aircraft carriers

Same as a normal shower but you are shamed if you use more than a minutes hot water, you get wet, turn off the water, soap up then rinse.

>There is very little downtime, you mostly sleep, eat, watch DVD's, play on your laptop or read.

>Are you allowed to have a phone?

Yes, good luck getting a signal though!
>>
What do they have in the way of PT? Are you stuck with bodyweight in cramped spaces?
>>
>>30023320
A small exercise bike and a rowing machine, you need to unstow and stow each time you use either of them.
>>
>>30023301
Thank you based anon
>>
>>30021904
OP here, thanks for all the replies, I think I'm gonna stay the fuck away from submarines.

SSN Radioman here. My job's great, but the boat itself blows major horse cock.

>>30023173

We're on eight hour watch rotations, so the 16 hours you're not on watch can have you doing maintenance for a few hours followed by drills, training and some down time before hitting the rack before you assume the watch again.

Showering sucks, don't touch the sides and don't touch the deck with your bare feet. Nobody likes a swampwalker.

Surprisingly nobody gives a rats ass about gameboys and vitas or whatever that all have that garbage.
>>
how little sleep do people get on subs?
is it shit for nuke officers too?
is it an awful lot of work for shitty conditions?
which sub would be better?
>>
>>30023170
Women are being phased into fast attacks and OHIO Replacement is being designed to accommodate women.
>>
>>30023170
>berthings and heads to keep them separated from males like decent americans should be
We should just fucking integrate that shit. You're on a fucking submarine with these people. They're going to see your cooter. Deal with it.

Average is about four to five hours a "night" if it's a heavy work/drill load. If you're fully qualified and there's nothing keeping you awake (I.E. Day Watch/Daywalker) then you can rack to the future for a good fourteen hours if you wanted to be a piece of shit.

Nuke Officers either love it or absolutely hate it. A fair number of my boat's JOs want out.

It is a fuck ton of work no matter what you do. You're always either working or qualifying to work on something. Boomers have a better quality of life, fast attacks get all the ports and the hunter/killer aspect so it's all what you prefer.
>>
>>30021904
Stupid question

Whats a boomer and whats a fast attack sub?

boomer = nuclear missile sub?
fast attack = sub destroyer?
>>
>>30024298
You pretty much nailed it, boomers go and hide with their missiles. Fast attack does a variety of tasks.
>>
To be a sub officer do you have to be really good at math/science?

I feel like being on a sub would be awesome

My only fear would be slow death on a sub with the water slowly filling up. Probably the scariest thing I could think of
>>
>>30024379
It would not be slow.
>>
>>30024379
>>30024416
Anyone have the gif of that train car being crushed by pressure?
>>
>>30024254
so is there always a ton of work on port too? if the fast attacks get port calls but theres no time to see it then whats the point i suppose.

are there a lot of accidents with subs? fires/collisions?
is there ever a chance to see the night sky in the ocean?
>>30024379
look up the nupoc study guide
>>
how do I into sub nuke?
shit seems cool, what do i need qualification wise?
>>
>>30024472
My dad said when they would pull into port him and his buddies would find a bar and pretty much take it over for the time they were in port. He would stand watch during the day and then get blackout drunk at night.
>>
>>30024298

Boomers carry the temporary man-made sun generators, fast attacks carry the anti-boomer stuff.
>>
>>30024676
do FAs and boomers roll together?
I mean shit, a boomer is pretty much defenseless save for playing the worlds largest game of hide and seek.

take napt test- qualify for nuke
pass meps- volunteer for sub

What kind of work does the crew have to do outside of their primary role?

I have always wanted to know what it takes to keep a sub running day to day.
>>
>>30027576
>What kind of work does the crew have to do outside of their primary role?
Cleaning, laundry, you are expected to constantly study to prepare for a promotion or learn about your boat. If you are a lazy fuck all the time you will not be popular.
>>
>>30023994
>SSN Radioman here.
Former spark here. Are you still using morse code?
>>
>>30024379

If hull integrity is lost at depth the hull collapses very quickly causing an adiabatic compression. Human bodies contain fat. So what you have is the compression stage of a diesel engine, so the oxygen at extreme compression causes auto ignition of fat and all humans are combusted in a fraction of a second. Literally you will be dead before you know anything is wrong.

I almost got into RN subs (only as a steward). Hearing not good enough though, high pitched deficiency. Kinda ticked off, as it doesn't affect day to day conversation and if I'm never going to be more than 5M away from someone I don;t see how it matters at all underwater. Maybe in another life.

My buddy from cadets, prick that he is, flies sub hunting helis now.
>>
>>30034406
>I almost got into RN subs (only as a steward)
You got lucky, Stewards are considered the most useless cunts in the fleet.
>>

>>

I will never understand anyone that wants that for a career, zero career progression and very little respect.
>>
>>30034550
Money and stability. I mean you could spend your whole life with one family providing they didn't go flat broke.

You know a high-end butler can pull a million a year?
>>
>>30034570
>You know a high-end butler can pull a million a year?
Maybe if you are letting the master fuck you on the side.
>>
>>30034584
Nah, if it's a celeb say. I think you're underestimating the market. Russian oligarch, new money Chinese. They'd shell out for a proper English butler, because they've seen Jeeves and Wooster. Although he was a Valet in that, whichs leads me on to saying a butler is a manager, yes you do parts of the service yourself, but you're not a manservent.
>>
>>30034616
>Russian oligarch, new money Chinese.
They treat you like a slave, same with Arabs too. Fine if you want to stay single all your life and travel a lot but I would not want to be at someone beck and call 24 hours a day if he fancies something stupid at 4am in the morning.
>>
>>30034650
Doesn't being on a sub tick everything you listed there? The golden hello isn't THAT much.
>>
>>30034682
You are not treated like a slave on RN boats, the work load is tough but you are well respected once you have your dolphins. Not many branches of the Military will have the Captain of the boat go out drinking with the lads, rank often goes right out the window when at sea as long as you respect the chain of command.
>>
>>30032755
>Nope, they did away with the Morse Code school years ago.
Yes, I am probably older than most here.

Still, Morse code was rather useful and you could burn through some ferocious jamming with the right setup that any self respecting telegraphist should master.
