Tank, I guess

>>30012400

It killed all the communists and then there were none left so it had to retire.

Sound concept.

Horrific technical problems.

Also, if you're relying on ATGMs as your anti-armor, you may as well just use an armored personnel carrier.
>>
>>30012400

they wanted to rely on an ATGM for their anti-armour, in principle not a bad idea for a light tank not primarily meant for MBT hunting.

Unfortunately, it was still the mid 50", so missile technology was still shit. THis meant that the missiles did not fucking work.

Other then that, good light tank, if you can accept that it is a LIGHT tank.

>>30012444
Funnily enough, modern IFV's are essentially light tanks similar to the Sheridan, except for the fact that they can now also carry troops.
>>
Wasn't the snorkel system all jacked up as well?
>>
>>30012400
Didn't it have a tendency to break the turret when firing?
>>
>>30013084
I thought it just used duplex drive

Firing the cannon knocked the guidance system for the missile out of alignment OR launching the missile knocked the sighting mechanism for the cannon out of whack. Can't remember which.

Gun launched ATGMS are fucking dumb, caseless ammo wasn't nearly mature enough at the time, FUCKING ALUMINUM HULL CAN BE PIERCED BY .50 BMG
The Sheridan might have been a cute little guy, but really it was an assdisaster of abject failure.
At least it was mostly an improvement over it's predecessor the literal GI Joe vehicle known as the m56 scor

First I believe.
>>
>>30012400
It was not JUST A GOOD, SOLID TANK.
>>
>>30012400
>Built around bleeding-edge technology (Shillelagh ATGM)
>No fucks given about survivability (sacks of propellant in crew compartment)
>Airborne mentality that AFVs don't matter

In about that order.
>>
>>30014365
The Kobra was developed just a few years after the Shillelagh was. If the US had been persistent with it I think they could have beaten the soviets in gun launched ATGM tech. Caseless ammo was used in the T-64 just fine. I also thought it was frontally rated to 20mm.

I feel that kind of tech was just wasted much like American radar controlled SPAAGs. They could have made a nice one of both but never took it seriously enough.

>>30012400

glass cannon with a shit cannon

i figure we could drone them up to be useful nowadays
>>
Airborne are light infantry. Why the fuck would they need a tank? That's what the army is for.
>>
>>30017522
As targets to train tankers?
>>
>>30017599

as kamikaze VBIEDs that rush the enemy going full retard with machineguns and missiles and explode into huge fireballs that create a nice smoke cover
