Which branch are you enlisting/enlisted/considering?
http://strawpoll.me/4671253

Ask questions, answer questions, bitch about Air Force recruiters. Just keep it contained to this general.

Does 11b/13d get a lot of time to finish up online schooling?
Want to use that juicy GI bill if I go in, and I realize that sweeping and dicking around in the field doesn't mean shit in real life
>>
>>30009553
I was going to make a thread but I had no clue how to get the pastepin stuff.
Anyway. Im shipping in June as a 35G. If I can recall, I get to make a list of bases I want to be stationed at after AIT. I know it doesn't mean much as far as if I'll get them or not. But what bases would anyone recommend? Id love to go to AK but Ive heard a lot of negative things about the actual base there. Any good west coast (fuck California though) or northeastern bases I should list?

>>
What are the best enlisted intelligence jobs? Or are they all shit?
>>
>>30009647

No, those aren't the jobs I'd pick to do college while you're in.

Also the GI Bill is only rarely an "in-service" benefit, it's mostly for after you're out. While you're in the military you usually use other benefits like TA or free CLEPs.
>>
>>30010308

Depends what you like. Cyber-y ones are the most marketable, but depending on your strengths being a linguist or image analyst might be something you're better at.

HUMINT tends to be a different animal, but since we're not deploying right now I'd generally not recommend it.
>>

AFTP. I actually did the new OPAT today as part of a "study" though. My recruiter told me it had no standing on me. I am in DEP though i don't know if that matters.

only one guy passed the jumping test by those standards. Deadlifts were a joke, ball toss was a joke, running was sad to see considering some of those guys were leaving in a few weeks. That jump is gonna fuck a lot of people over.
>>
>>30011851

>>

Bruh, you know that less than 40% of vets even go to college? Of that 40% like 35% end up finishing whatever program they signed up for. I'd love to know what the stats are concerning what types of degrees vets get, most I know of go for political science or kinesiology.

Can we not even pretend like people who join the military are intelligent? Anyone who has served knows that every branch is 90% full retard.
>>

I always contend that if the military wasn't a thing most of the people I met while I was in would be flipping burgers.

The entitlement is getting pretty out of control these days especially now that facebook generation are in the military. Faggots flashing their CAC everywhere they go trying to get discounts, faggots making gofundme accounts because they blew all their money on gundam models and video games...

People are really starting to hate vets all due to the kids who noticed that the deployments have stopped but the bootlicking has yet to joined and started fucking it up for everyone.

Also which have the best places to get stationed?
>>

DL is 160 and you pass. Hex bar. Everyone passed. One guy got up to 320 to show off his balls and we ran out of weight.

Ball toss im not sure what passing was. Everyone passed though.

Beep test and long jump were the killers. Lots of guys couldn't run for too long and like I said only one guy met the long jump standards. But we're DEPers so with a little PT im sure the average will increase.

Not when you take bonuses, rate of promotion, and other intangibles into account.

If you go into the Navy as a nuke, at the end of the first year, you'll have a LOT more money than someone that went infantry in the army.
>>
>>30014682
Very true but quality of life is very different. Theres positives and negatives to each branch and each job/rate/mos.

Not even a MEPS thing. We litterally did it in an abandoned building next to the recruiting station. All of us there had already gone to and passes meps. The recruiter flat out told us it wouldn't have any impact on us and we'd get our MOSs no matter how we did.

But if someone is asking specifically about which position gets the most pay, you obviously have to take how likely it is to get those into account to give him any sort of answer.

It's like asking which car is the cheapest to drive and you say 'it doesn't matter, gas is the same price no matter what,' while ignoring miles per gallon, insurance, and maintenance costs.
>>
>>30015158
Sure, but the guy just asked what branch had the best "perks" not which position gives you the highest special pay.

Do they actually require a language to drop your packet now? Last I heard you just had to have a solid DLAB score.

My understanding: everything. They lead special tactics teams which consist of all of AFSOC's flavors, but also get sent on missions as part of TACPs with the other SOF groups, so you direct air support while doing what they do.

>>
AFSOF is much more limited version of Navy Special Warfare, MARSOC or Army SOF. They only exist to support airframes and all the other services have their own air strike support units.

Its the easiest way to get into the SOF community due to lower regs.

>STO
>Desk job

Kek. You're hearing that from stupid people, such as...

>>30030492

>all of this shit
>so much wrong in this statement
>It must be deliberate

Actually the CCT pipeline is the hardest. Let's go over this:

>Rangers: Infantry + who can't swim
>SEALs: Rangers who swim but somehow lost the ability to take airfields
>Delta: Rangers+ who still can't swim
>MARSOC: Off-brand SEALs
>DEVGRU: Off-brand Delta who drink a lot, learning to swim has weird side effects
>SF: Legitimate SOF, do FID missions in addition to occasional direct action.

ATC and Programming are probably the two hardest schools there, expect to be stressed as hell, it blows. Just hunker down and deal with it.

There is a decent mall, and a bunch of casinos within 10 minutes of base. Also a good vape shop right outside of the gate. New Orleans and Pensacola are both within 2 hours, but without a car or a friend with a car you have to go as a group and split cab fare

not a ton to do in biloxi itself outside of what i listed. there IS a nice beach but the water has a bunch of shitty bacteria in it so its HIGHLY advised not to swim in it unless you want to risk losing a limb

>>
>>30035767
its all the same shit and what you do varies unit to unit, regardless of branch

Fusion Analyst is one of out lesser known SIGINGT jobs, they work with emissions, and if I didnt have my job and couldnt be aircrew, it would be on my short list of things to do

Airborne ISR would also be gucci

I work with the E3 myself, but have friends on RC135's, its neat shit

People hating on other branches either:
A) are autistic and dont know the first thing about what they are spouting
B) arnt actually mil and just shitposting
C) are mil and are told X by people even though Y is reality

I have friends in all branches, two of whom are officers, in jobs ranging from pilots to arty to SF to GM in USCG. Each branch has some perks over the others and none are a bad choice if you want to go mil, it just depends on what you actually want to do as a job. Some of us do shit better than others who do the same shit. I'm still jealous as fuck about coastie bro but my job is neat and cushy as fuck, so its whatever
>>
>>30035858

ISR seems interesting, though I don't know how trigger happy they are with the kinetic list, and I wouldn't want to lose any intelligence assets to them.

I know of at least one DEA agent who flipped shit when he found out that one of his informants in Afghanistan was placed on the kinetic list and he had to arrest the guy or let him get droned out of existence.
>>
>>30035608
Tell me about 1B4
>>
I know people say that the military fucks up your body over a period of time, particularly the joints. But is that mainly targeted towards infantry, or does the same go for other roles as well?
>>
>>30035908
as an ISR operator, you wouldnt have shit to do with the list. You just gather intelligence in various forms and pass it up the chain for decisions to be made. Its the chain that fucks everything up lmao

but ISR op's dont just find a cell signal shithole province and add it to a list. Thats what analysts are for

>>30035938
1B4 is cyber warfare. I know a few NCO's who are either 1B4 or about to go train into it.

You can only retain into it, its like MTI's, MTL's, and OSI, not available to someone newly joining

The vast majority of 1B4's are former programmers, but most of the rest still come from cyber, whether it be surety, ops, or trans

I cant tell you a lot about what they do that you cant already find simply because i'm not sure how much I know about what they do I'm allowed to relate to yall

anyways, there are two main 1B4 jobs, offensive and defensive cyber warfare. officer equivalent is 17S

they do a lot of network intrusion and the like, and also just beat the shit out of various base and DoD networks to find vulnerabilities. They are our hackers.

some of them do Red team exercises from base to base to test security, last one they did here they basically got together in town, and made a plan to get onto base with no ID, get into a specific building with no line badge or code, and get onto SIPR without their account or pw

one guy I know has a BOLO poster with his face on it from an exercise a few years back

overall 1B4 can either be a really fucking cool or really monotonous job depending on unit you get stuck with. Some do work with NSA, some do other shit. It varies. The field is expected to grow in the coming years too

also getting out with the experience as a 1B4 and the certs you acquire along the way will set you the fuck up for a private sector security related job
>>
>>30036048

Yeah, that's my worry.

>be HUMINT/SIGINT/IMINT guy

I work out every day and I get straight A's in school. My fear about basic training isn't about my capabilities to fail; my fear is that I will get booted for being too tough. If the drill sergeants try bossing me around, I fear my subconscious fighting skills in karate (I'm a black belt) will take over and I will strike and injure a drill sergeant. How can I control the fighting force that has been instilled in me? Since I have straight A's and am already a fighting force, can I get a waiver from my recruiter so I don't have to attend basic training?

LOL good descriptions, my man

That's definitely what I want to do. No desk job, I want to get in the field for a little while and perhaps make a career in the military which is why I'd rather commission and enter the pipeline as STO.

Not many resources of first hand experience around though, since 90-95% of students wash out of the CCT pipeline.

I have about 3 years to prepare. Gonna start rucking and swimming soon.
>>
>>30036321

I dunno about rucking since if you do that shit wrong it can fuck you up. I've got 2-4 years myself, depending on if I want that engineering major too, but I'm going to start with swimming and just hope that general physical fitness will carry me through rucking.
>>
>>30036355
checked.

You engineering major too? Electrical over here.

True about the rucking, I've read that if you can run a 6-minute mile, that physical aptitude will go a long way when it comes to rucking.

I wonder why STOs or CCTs dont have a mythical status like other SOFs

Their pipeline is the most intense, washout rate is incredible

Anybody have an opinion on CCTs/STOs from within the armed forces?

You won't be getting to do cool shit for years regardless. Any choice is a good choice and OCP ACU's are way better than ABU's, but idk if army cyber units wear them.

Well I'm sure that the other anon doesn't know anything about the air force other than what he has been told to hate them for.

Just FYI since you obviously haven't done any time: the air force is run like a horrible government funded business. Morale is shit in maintenance due to ludicrous working hours, plus dudes being randomly shift changed, and the rest of the air force just sits around on reddit all day complaining about mandatory fun.

Leadership thinks they can fix the issues by forcing people, sometimes on weekends, to go bowling as a flight. For some reason they just don't understand that people only want some time off. Then there is the fact that half of every flight is a buttfucking backstabber...

My sister is in, her job and lifestyle is so amazingly easy compared to what i went through in the navy.

Yo any other former/future/current 18x pipeline members on here? Fixing to ship in a few, been too busy prepping for it over the past months to actually pay attention to much of the usual /meg/ faggotry (as I expect most 18xers with their shit together are)
>>
>>30047327
Yo man, ive posted on here before, navy vet whose trying to go back in to Army as an 18x. I havent talked to a recruiter yet cause im preparing physically. Whats up with you
>>
>>30047373
Decided to look seriously into it abt a year and a half ago, started easing into training before the summer, signed the contract and started seriously training in the fall, got some SFbros to hang with and get advice from, shipping out shortly. Not too stressed about it: in pretty solid physical/mental shape for it, and if it doesn't work the first time around I'll keep on putting packets in until they tell me to legit fuck off and never come back or let me in. Looking forward to it: am going straight into it after being in college for 6 yrs (bachelors + masters). Got an engineering undergrad so if everything goes legit balls up and crashes and burns I'll not be destitute after my contract is up. From what I hear at the recruiters 18x contracts are relatively easy to snag (if you have the test scores, medical OK, etc) compared to a lot of the vanilla combat arms ones, interestingly enough.

>From what I hear at the recruiters 18x contracts are relatively easy to snag (if you have the test scores, medical OK, etc) compared to a lot of the vanilla combat arms ones, interestingly enough.
Nice, ya my other discharge is perfect, no medical prob, no debt, no record. I def meet all the qualifications for one. Couple questions,
Did you go in with the idea of 18x or were you not sure what you wanted to do?
Did they give you the contract no problem?
How long were you in DEP for?
Any signing bonus?
>>
I'm on the sill bus, if you're on here sill bro, cough loudly
>>
>>30047458
Yeah, I was going to go to the AF to snag a SOWT or TACP pipeline contract if they wouldn't give me a 18x one.
I did take the pains to time it so I was signing right at the beginning of the fiscal cycle in October (more contracts in general available then), which I was told made it easier for me.
Was in DEP from early October until like two weeks from now, so approximately the full 9 months they let you
Nah I think the only signing bonus they give out with any regularity these days is a quick ship one, and if you wait to sign until you're all physically prepped and all it's a lot more of a gamble whether or not they'll have a spot open.
Not a recruiter, but from what I gather they like to sign people a bit more in advance for 18x/opt 40 because it makes scheduling out the next year's sequence of selection/SOPC classes easier for them.
Had a pretty chill recruiter so that helped my experience be hassle-free too I guess
>>
>>30047503
>so approximately the full 9 months they let you
You mean they let you choose how long to be in DEP? Cause tbhfam id rather leave sooner than later.
>and if you wait to sign until you're all physically prepped and all it's a lot more of a gamble whether or not they'll have a spot open.
Could you elaborate on what this means? I remember when i was in the Navy DEP the way a seal contract worked was you choose some other job and while you were in DEP you had to try out then re-sign for a seal contract, is 18x something like that?

Appreciate the help btw. I may end up waiting until October as well just cause but i want to have as much info in my pocket going in to a recruiters as possible.
>>
>>30047535
Yeah i mean if you have a non-shitty recruiter they'll work with you to give you the ship date you want, if it's available.
Honestly your best bet if you want to ship pronto is to just go and talk with a recruiter and see when their soonest openings are. Worst case, you don't like the options they give you and they're dicks to you and you have to go find another nearby station to work with.
Seal contracts are all kinds of fucky, there's not a shit-ton of parallelism there with how either opt 40 or 18x works. You're pretty much expected to have your own physical prep shit together and all - only pre-ship check they have there is one full PFT a few weeks before you ship to make sure you're not retardedly out of shape.
>>
>>30030698
>no tacp
>>
>>30047616
Very interesting thx for the info. So you are saying with 18x you get the contract straight up, you dont have to try out for it or anything like that?
>>
>>30047617
i mean this is communism edition, after all
>>
>>30042320
Marines are literally Army that gets shittier jobs and worse opportunity for promotion
>>
>>30047636
The ways they can be like fuck you no 18x for you, afaik, are the following.
1. You have criminal record shit that shows up on the automated background check they do.
2. You fail the drug test at MEPS when you go the first time.
3. You sound sketchy as shit to the MEPS clearance guy they have you talk with for like 5 minutes (all he does is look at your sf86 info and double check with you that you're not lying (or admitting to lying, at least) about anything you put on there.
4. You are physically DQ'ed at MEPS (are not given the OK by the doctor that does your Airborne physical)
5. You have stupid-ass ASVAB scores.
6. You're visibly a fat fuck with no hope of getting to 80 in each section of the APFT before shipping.

Any other ways of getting kicked out of 18x, afaik, happen post-ship-date.
>>
>>30047694
Sounds good man i pass all that, im just saying do you sign up for it just the same way you would with any other job as opposed to what i said about the seal contract. I just wanna make sure they dont pull a fast one on me by saying something like, just sign for this random job in the mean time eventually a 18x will open up and i end up getting fucked.
>>
just got back from a 16 hour day at meps, knocked out ASVAB and physical in one day and swore in

>feelsgoodman
>>
>>30047732
Yeah you sign up for it the same way you would anything else that's a MOS-specific contract: if your MOS (18x) isn't explicitly named on the contract you sign, you're fucked in theory at least. They're trying to increase the amount of actual SF personnel of course, so chances are this won't be the pain in the ass for you that it was for prospective 18xers like five and ten years ago: professionalsoldiers.com has horror stories in abundance of people in low-intensity conflict with recruiters trying to pull a fast one on people back in the day. Haven't heard much in that vein about recent contracts, so you're likely not to have quite the hassle that people have had historically.

>>30047738
Branch? Job?
>>
>>30047768
Sounds great man. I like what im hearing. Any other info you can think to share or feel like sharing?
>>
>>30047770
USMC you dont pick your job at meps, its like air force you have to wait untill a slot opens up with your recruiter.
>>
>>30047809
Interesting, why is that? I would imagine that would screw a lot of people over wouldnt it?
>>
>>30047835
yeah its not as nice as Army or Navy where you get to pick your specific job but hey, you do it to be a Marine first.
>>
>>30047779
I mean shit I don't have that much extra to share - all the physical prep stuff is covered in excess other places on the internet, and that's more or less the only shit i've been doing specifically to gear for that. Like everybody always says, professionalsoldiers.com is the place to go for non-bogus info on all things SF: I probably spent more screen time lurking on there than anywhere else to get my info. Tone of conversation on there gives you solid general insight into how the people who literally make the decisions on who passes SFAS/the Q-course, etc think.

Future op40 fag here. Finishing undergrad then enlisting. When do y'all ship?
>>
>>30047885
That goes along with what ive heard before. Thx man.
>>30047920
Nice, im a navy vet. I dont got an 18x contract yet but i should have no problems getting one. Gonna go see a recruiter probably around july/august time frame if possible.
>>
>>30047920
Early this next month
>>
>>30047973
Best of luck, though based on your posts you shouldn't encounter anything you're not mentally or physically prepared for.
>>30047935
Yeah I remember you from maybe 6 or so months back, though I wasn't aware previous service guys could get 18x contracts.
>>
>>30048002
>though I wasn't aware previous service guys could get 18x contracts.
I havent heard that I couldnt. That guy who has an 18x trip is in airborne and he said alot of guys he went through with were vets already. Had you heard differently?
>>
>>30048024
I had just heard that previous service guys couldn't get them. But it may only be Army previous service. I'm outta my lane on this one.
>>
I'm in the Alabama NG that recently finished federal OCS. I chose MP as my branch because reasons, but during training I really liked the infantry aspect.

My question is is there anyway I can switch to be an infantry officer? I know the Guard is a bit finicky when it comes to it and is state dependant.
>>
>>30048045
Hm I gotcha. I guess ill find out.
>>
Grunt here

I just want to clear up one huge misconception about joining the service that I see all the time. It's not going to help you get pussy. The guys that get pussy in the military are the guys that got pussy as civilians. Chicks go for the popular, good looking guys, period

This is true in the air force for sure. I'm in the best shape of my life and am doing really well in tech school and I'm not a train wreck of a looker and still can't even get a girl to flirt with.

Sounds like an awesome rate, just wondering if I'm simply over hyping it.

Also that pipeline looks fucking long

Truth

Nobody gets brainwashed into being a bad ass in any boot camp. You come out the same person you go in as.

It was sort of a shock after getting to my first fleet unit to come to the realization that everyone is just a "normal person." I had totally bought into the whole movie bullshit about how the military is - in truth it is just high school but everyone has a little bit of money so they can finance their terrible decisions.
>>
>>30051651

I'm told they save that for Indoc.
>>
>>30050865
Its a good rate. Youll get attached to a helo squadron and deploy with them. All they did on my ship was chill, workout, and evey once and a while theyd go out in the helo for a few hours. Easy as shit.
