My question: What are some solid choices for a 124gr 9mm defense ammo for 4-5" guns?

>Keeping in mind that handguns generally offer poor incapacitation potential, bullets with effective terminal performance are available in all of the most commonly used duty pistol calibers—pick the one that you shoot most accurately, that is most reliable in the type of pistol you choose, and best suits you likely engagement scenarios.

>The following loads all demonstrate outstanding terminal performance and can be considered acceptable for duty/self-defense use:

9 mm:
Barnes XPB 115 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)
Federal HST 124 gr +P JHP (P9HST3)
Remington Golden Saber bonded 124 gr +P JHP (GSB9MMD)

Honestly, something that goes about 1200 fps, always fires, and always expands. Don't overthink it. It is not a rifle, shot placement is more important than bullet design.

This is why I just load my own. 124gr XTPs at about 1250 fps. INB4 you are fucked in court if you shoot someone with reloads. NO, you are not. Any good lawyer will defeat this if it even goes to court.

Is buying really old guns a bad idea if you plan to use them as your main shooting gun?

Some guy I am talking with has a Brno (pre-CZ, around 1950ish gun) #1 .22lr rifle to sell and I am thinking of getting it as my first gun.

This would be my only gun for some years (third world country, everything is expensive and this will cost two full months of my pay check) so I do not want something that will break and have no parts to fix it or that isn't working well for some reason and no gunsmith knows how to mess with it.

Why are gun lasers so expensive? Why does it cost $80 for what's essentially a decent laser pointer mounted on a piece of plastic?

Has anyone here ever made their own mounted laser using a laser module before? I imagine it'd be pretty simple to come up with a decent result if you had a 3d printer.

>>30011062
what kinda gun do you have? What sort of accessory do you want?

>>30014754
it's expensive because a very good laser pointer is also a bit pricey but then combine that with a stable enough frame that does not lose it's zero because of recoil. Also a better laser makes a nice red dot with less artificats than a crappy one and usually works at a greater distance than a crappy one. My point of comparison is my $40 boresighting laser, cheap lasermax lc9 laser and a cheap gas station pointer.

The 100yd boresighter isnt constructed to withstand recoil since you dont shoot while using it but it has the brightest and most visible at distance laser.

The LaserMax pistol laser holds zero perfectly but has a few artifacts if you take a good look at the spot its pointed at. you dont need much out of a pistol laser's actual light but you do want it to stay sighted while using it so thats more important.

The shitty pointer is not very bright, actually looks like it has shitty resolution, makes a shitty dot and manages its power poorly and runs out of juice quicker than the rest.

Here's my question
I want to start an SBR project and I'm looking at going with a m85 (AK pistol in 556 that takes AR mags). I want to get a shockwave brace while i wait, what buffer adapter should I go with? Is it worth it to even bother getting a folding one or should I save the folding for when I get the papers? If I were to go for a 2nd stamp, does the hueristic of "suppressors arent that great on AK's" still apply to AK's in 5.56?

Picking up a Colt Detective Special I got a hell of a deal on. 85-87% condition bluing all function good etc for 400.

From 1974, feel like the only reason I'm getting it for the price are the grips(their actual Colt grips but not the 2 styles everyone wants them in and the year)

Found only two on eBay in the style I'm looking for, which should I get, first set are plastic replicas for 25 dollars free shipping and the other right now are 39 and with 4 days left, but from 1933.

Anywhere else I should look, or just get the plastic ones or get the real ones?(the plastic can kinda be like going with a old school SAA)

a pistol is personal.
It's the weapon you carry on your persons and frankly, you'd be trusting your life more to the handgun than a long gun MOST times of the day, unless you carry your rifle everywhere or you're stay at home.

Not to mention the shear amount and variety of handguns, along with the accessories.

You'd be surprised how well it will conceal with an oversized t-shirt, You'll have to get a holster that holds it close. 4 o clock and possibly appendix might be your best bests. Also yeah, jackets, stylish button ups left untucked (or tucked depending on the holster), etc are very useful at disguising the shape. Good posture helps too. Noguns who's shot a lot of friends' guns here.

I'm trying to decide on my firstgun. I'm torn between a handy light .223 or .308 boltgun like a Howa 1500 and a Mossberg 590A1. I'm currently leaning toward the 590 because it'd be a good HD gun, while the boltgun would be much better as a range toy. What does /k/ think?

BTW, I've shot quite a few shotguns, including the ubiquitous 870 and 500 series, and prefer the safety and slide release of the 500. I've also fondled a 590A1 but never shot it. The difference in price between a basic 500/590 and the 590A1 doesn't really bother me, I'd rather just buy the guns I want off the bat instead of saving a few bucks on stuff I know I'll replace down the line.

If I can make my gear (in progress) I guess I could use this. But I might end up buying this instead.

Hey man, nothing wrong with that.

What I meant to ask was, what's higher priority for you: Home defense, or having cool guns to play with at the range? If I was you, I'd secure my home defense first and then think about fun stuff, but if odds of you having to actually defend your home are negligible then the situation changes.

You can always do both with a tacticool AR, but I'm feeling that's not quite your speed.

I don't think you're gonna be lynched anytime soon, but then you know your area better than I do.

Stay safe, anon

It's world of warcraft dressed up like a tactical third person shooter.

No, I am not shitting you. There are dungeons and and everything.
>>
>>30026188
Yes.

The old pot helmets were for shrapnel only, and even then resulted in a lot of debilitating brain and head injuries instead of the poor fuck just dying outright because the padding/liner was insufficient to protect them from the impact.

Helmets in general have always been pretty shit because your brain's already heavy enough and your head isn't really set up to bear extra weight like the rest of you is.

PAGST is compressed kevlar cakes and is in theory good for pistol rounds.

I think they have better stuff today but in the same breath, I'm not sure I'd want to be alive after a rifle caliber round hit my head - even if it didn't penetrate. That's a lot of energy being imparted, good way to jelly the brainmeats.

But they may have gotten around that problem, who knows

Does anyone have any opinion on this barrel?

I bought an upper with a 16" barrel with carbine length gas a while back but now I'm wanting to switch to a middy for the smoother action and to be a little bit easier on the components. This barrel is inexpensive, but is it cheap crap? I take it to the range quite probably once a week and it's also my HD gun.

Okay. Then do you know of anyone who makes a good barrel? I know cz-usa has threaded barrels, but if I'm going to go through the trouble of having a barrel fitted I might as well make it an improvement in accuracy over the regular barrel. These things seem to be kind of hard to find because the standard barrel is too small in diameter for common threads or something.

I have some serious concern about my mossberg 930 JM pro.

Bought this gun used. Have shot hundreds of rounds majority being birdshot, and have noticed the gouges when I bought it. The gun functions flawlessly, I've had 0 malfunctions thus far, but Im afraid of lurking catastrophic failures.
Now, these gouges dont seem to be critical load bearing areas or anything, but Im not exactly sure how this happened, if its the gun slowly destroying itself or what.

This image is looking from the loading port, so what you see is the top of the inside of the receiver.

You can see heavy wear signs, and another semi-circular gouge on the side wall of the receiver.

Like I stated before, just want to make sure these don't affect the specs of the gun in any critical way. Not sure how they got there. My best guess is the bolt and lug are contacting the shelf there and wearing it.

Here is a pic of the top of the bolt and the lug. Heavily worn.

No mechanical malfunctions, or sloppiness when I fire the gun. I honestly don't know whether to be concerned. Since Its preformed flawlessly, im leaning towards this being a non issue.

Could use some input, thanks to anyone who has some insight.
>>
>>30035030
That looks like a design flaw or maybe just slightly off machining, and might just be something that happens when the bolt moves back whenever the gun cycles. I doubt the gun is going to blow up in your face, but if that goes on long enough it might not cycle reliably. That said, I don't think that'll happen any time soon.

Help a newbie learn to appraise used guns?

I pretty much have my heart set on a revolver. I want at least 38 spl +P, bigger would be nice but I need as cheap as possible. Very little shooting experience.

Can anyone give me tips on how to judge a gun's quality quickly?
>>
>>30037698
buy a bore light and/or a bore gauge. If the bore looks like shit, i.e. you can't see rifling or there's pitting/rust inside the barrel, it is bad.

Try cycling the gun, all the parts should move smoothly and easily.

Least important is obvious cosmetic damage. Exterior pitting/rust, chips or scratches in wooden furniture, worn finish. These things don't matter much on their own, but if you suspect there's other problems, cosmetic damage is strong evidence that whatever excuse the pawnshop guy feeds you is bullshit.

If a gun looks brand new but has problems cycling, it might actually just need lubed. If a gun looks beat to hell, "it just needs lubed" is bullshit.
>>
>>30037793

They are. I like the originals, not the tactical ones. The tactical ones have needless rubber.

Skip any gloves with that hard knuckle nonsense on them.

Most people who get all fanboy about buying lifetime gloves or whatever are too spergy. If you just gearqueer, gloves of almost any make will last forever. If you're in the military and use gloves, they will get fucked up no matter what.

hollow points are bullshit.

>there is no significant difference between 9mm, .49 S&W, .45 ACP
>all three require multiple hits and good shot placement for immediate threat stoppage
>this is true regardless of bullet design
>temporary cavity of service caliber hollow points is a myth
>the cavity causes no damage and cannot rupture elastic tissue
>expanding bullets often stop before hitting vital organs
>FMJ gives full depth of penetration
>with good shot placement, FMJ is extremely reliable in stoppage
>the only real difference is that FMJ will always give you full depth of penetration, where as hollow points may expand and stop too early

B-B-B-BUT OVER PENETRATION!! YOU COULD H-H-H-HURT SOMEONE!!

>hollow points will sometimes fail to expand, and act like FMJ anyway
>that's why you need to make sure of your target ans what lies beyond
>FMJ doesn't make this any more complicated
>it also increases your ability to shoot through doors, walls, glass, etc. in order to hit your target

in rifles, the temporary cavity of a hollow point is indeed damaging, and can have some catastrophic results on target, but service caliber handguns simply lack the power to make use of expanding bullets. stick with the heaviest FMJ you can get

I'm in the Alabama NG that recently finished federal OCS. I chose MP as my branch because reasons, but during training I really liked the infantry aspect.

My question is is there anyway I can switch to be an infantry officer? I know the Guard is a bit finicky when it comes to it and is state dependant

>hollowpoints will sometimes in rare cases fail

>which means there's clearly no point using them

>Anon should use a possibly-ricochet prone target bullet that fails to expand 100% of the time with the added bonus of glancing off angled hits

>especially one loaded with cheaper non flash-suppressed powder and no primer or bullet sealant to prevent water intrusion and subsequent failures to fire or squibs

>nor is the ammo given the same amount of quality control inspections as defensive ammunition to weed out rounds that are damaged, deformed, or poorly sized in length

>Anon should ignore all the testing of high quality bonded defensive ammunition that is specifically designed to defeat plywood, wallboard, auto safety glass while still expanding after hitting soft targets behind them

>my face when

How about no? I can see the merit of carrying flat point hard cast FMJ or lead in the backcountry where overpenetration has minimal negatives and adequate penetration is vital, but the vast majority of law enforcement shootings with quality hollowpoint ammunition display effective performance while minimizing overpenetration.

Do you also advocate using revolvers defensively since semiautomatic pistols display the occasional tendency to malfunction and require immediate action to clear?

Also why is the barrel wobbly?
>>
>>30052003
>>30051998
It looks like the extractor is catching on the back of the round and not the seating in the rim.
Solution is to not drop a round in the chamber and try to close it. Instead load it into a mag and rack it back like you are supposed to.
>>
>>30052027
And i also dropped a loaded magazine on the floor when i was practicing reloading and it dented the floor plate.
Is the magazine safe to use?.
And why won't the gun go on safe when the hammer is fully forward?
And how hard should i push the magazine in?
And also i can't really focus on the front sight at all like im supposed to.
Is it because i wear glasses?
Im sorry i know this is alot of questions and i sound retarded but this is my first gun :(

>And i also dropped a loaded magazine on the floor when i was practicing reloading and it dented the floor plate.
>Is the magazine safe to use?.
Worst case, rounds won't feed well. It is safe, but it might not work well. Should be fine.
>And why won't the gun go on safe when the hammer is fully forward?
HP is single action only, so the gun can not go BANG unless the hammer is cocked and a round is chambered.
>And how hard should i push the magazine in?
With the force of one thousand suns. Seriously though, just push it in until you hear or feel the click. You can give it a slap to make sure it seats. Again, this gun will only go BANG if a round is chambered and the hammer is cocked
>And also i can't really focus on the front sight at all like im supposed to.
>Is it because i wear glasses?
Practice. Practice, practice and more practice.
>>
For higher caliber weapons why not just add more/ better recoil springs to make the recoil equivalent to typical cartridges?

Why not just add these things to something like a .50AE Desert Eagle so it shoots like 9mm?
>>
>>30052163
also, the only pistol I know that was designed to work with placing a round directly in the chamber is the Beretta m9/92fs. It was one of the criteria the military had for their service pistol.

physics motherfucker, so you speak it? A recoil spring alone just takes the very short very violent BANG and evens it to a slower less violent push.

There are plenty of good recoil mitigating designs, but they are a bit more complex then "put a new spring in it."

Find a local FFL that will do transfers and ask how much they charge. Not every place with an FFL is a "gun shop." Then you can comparison shop the whole country. Add the shipping and transfer fee to the price they quote and bingo bango, you can definitely beat $750.

What sort of sights should I get for it?

I do like how the Holosun HS503C has a circle dot someone like an Eotech. A bit concerned about warranty / how well it will hold up compared to the other Holosun models.

I have heard nothing but great things about the Vortex Sparc 2. The warranty is supposedly amazing too. Perhaps the Vortex Venom 3 instead?

Would go for Eotech but inner jew is always telling me to spend less. Warranty isn't that stellar compare to others, who knows if company will still be around to even warranty.

If someone is set on killing you, I would not trust it to protect you. I can say that it will definitely fuck their day though. Plus, you really only get one shot. Honestly, I'd say you are better off with a hammer if you can't have a gun or knives. But to answer your question, it's possible. Mine goes right through half inch pieces of wood and takes plenty of birds, but how effective it would be against some thick headed criminal is something I can only guess about. A hit is guaranteed to be very unpleasant, but I doubt there will be the necessary energy remaining in the pellet to destroy enough brain tissue to be guaranteed to kill with a headshot, even if it does go through. If you only want an air rifle for this purpose, I think you have better options.
