If you're in the US, there's no special restriction against home-built weapons. As long as you're within the rest of the law regarding barrel length and whatever, you're good. Hence the whole thing about that dude in Texas 3D-printing an AR lower.

Since there's no registry whatsoever, there's no way for anyone to know your weapon is illegally obtained, home-built or not. If it's home-made, say you made it. If they ask how, you got some help from a friend.

Technologically a small amount behind the laser wielding, spacefaring humans, but seemingly able to build functioning weapons and vehicles out of scrap in ways that defy logic or sense. The reader, but not setting characters, are made aware that this is likely some kind of psychic fuckery. Like, put an 8 foot tall ork in a cell with a can of tuna and a tea set, and somehow he breaks out an hour later with a gyrojet rifle. Language and culture-wise, they are basically soccer hooligans, that simply grow in size until they die. Young orkz are tiny goblins, famous ork warbosses have been the size of tanks. One famous warboss faced off in single combat against a tank the size of a Ratte, the experimental german mobile base.

Generally like found on the net. Change the barrel. widen/length the mag well, change grips to only cover 3/4 of width for wider rounds.
stiffer spring for higher recoil.
Make plan via measuring the original gun, expand and make fit the standard parts. Or fab your own parts knowing where the critical parts mate to fee the rounds. Everything else is cake or looks. Use stainless 610 for the barrel above .32ACP. Thicker
