If you didn't bring a big ass bomb with you you can't exactly use one. Remember these guys were running recon missions and already carrying a shit ton of equipment. Improvisation was the order of the day. In another book Bob Howard is said to have run up alongside a passing NVA troop truck with Claymore and clacker in hand, tossed the mine into the truck bed, and set it off.

Correct - they were ranger attachments. I was in a LRRP unit but that was a decade after Vietnam.
