I'm new to guns, /k/. I'll admit that right off the bat. My cousin invited me deer hunting, and I don't have a suitable deer rifle. What calibers do you guys recommend? Any good rifles that won't break the bank? I'm willing to spend around 500-600 on the rifle.
>pic completely unrelated.

Savage axis in .308
>>
>>29990640
Savage axis in 308 with optic combo. Should be around $400-$500. If that fails the ruger american in 308 offers a similar combo for a similar standpoint.

30-06 is also acceptable but there really isnt an advantage in one way or the other.

Ask if you can shoot his, buy a good pair of boots and a pair of binos. Buy a cheap rifle in .223/5.56 with a decent scope. You'll probably have to spit the money between scope and rifle.

>Pic sort of related
>>
>>29990704
Forgot to add, the calibur is not to hunt with but to practice and shoot recreationally with.
>>
Remington 783 in .270 with scope will run you ≤$350. You can't lose.
>>
>>29990640
Ruger American or Savage Axis chambered in .243, .270, or .30-30

Most .30 caliber rounds normally aren't necessary for whitetail unless you're shooting them at 400+ yards or plan on not caring about shot placement, which you're most likely not gonna do.

Did the other entry level rifles all fall off the face of the earth?

What to use to kill turkey? I have no access to guns, but have about 100 acres of land and a hunger for the meat of my foes.

Budget is 150 dollars, I have access to a basic shop (Drill press, miter saw, etc.) basic understanding of bushcraft and outdoorsy shit (Eagle scout) and access to basic materials.

About 20 acres of the land is cleared, there are two ponds in the cleared area, one touches the treeline

How do I kill the turkey?

Current ideas are black powder and ball bearings connected to an electric trigger.

Atl atl

Running the turkey down with a spear (endurance hunting)

A sling

Some sort of baited trap.

I don't give a fuck about the laws, I'm isolated, but I would like to kill a gobbler instead of a hen or random animal, so a trap would need to have LOS and a manual trigger.

What do /k/?

OP asked about budget minded (first) deer rifles. It's not hideous and it works.
I don't understand the problem.

Autism

It was only like half a mil, most of it is shitty and swampy anyway. I mostly like it because of the ponds, I raise rainbow trout in one of them.

>>29990846
Considered this, but at that point I would just buy a cheap break-action. I'd kind of like to get creative.
>>
>>29990679
I was looking at the savages and they seem nice. I hear mixed things about the .308, but I figure it's good enough for 650 yards. I'm probably not going to shoot past 100 yards since it's my first time hunting, but I'd like something to last for other hunting trips.
>>
>>29991055
That anon is exactly right. Get the axis 2, it's supposed to have a better, adjustable trigger, and if you get it in a scoped combo and can wait for one of savages frequent rebates + store sale, you could get for about $300-350. Spend the rest on ammo for practicing. And idiots here spout nonsense about how .308 is ONLY good to ???yds, but that number is usually well over double what most of us will ever shoot. And good .308 can be had at Walmart for about .60 a round.
>>
>>29990640

>>
7.62, .308, or .30-06
>>
>>29990809
Nobody has anything interesting?

I'm probably going to just bait it, trap it, then kill it, but I've got plenty of time and not much to do.
>>
>>29991055
Seriously, you will probably not find yourself taking a 600+ yard shot unless you make a very very deliberate effort. And fyi, military snipers have been using .308 out past 1000yds for more than 40 years.
>>
>>29990776
>Most .30 caliber rounds normally aren't necessary for whitetail

What backwater ass shithole do you come from where the deer are so small that 308 is overkill
>>
>>29991234
Some idiots hunt deer with .22lr, so there's that. I consider .308 on the large side but definitely not overkill.
>>
>>29991254
22lr deer kills are all head shots, not proper heart/lung shots

Shit, I consider 243 and 270 to be chickenshit compared to 308
243 especially

>>
>>29991230
Hell, if .308 is good enough for them it's damn good for me. Thanks, guys. I'll definitely take a look at Savage. Y'all have an interesting reputation around the Internet, but you guys sure are helpful. Thanks again.
>>
>>29990640
>>29991055

If you're in the wide open west I'd advice a caliber for longer ranges like 270, 308, 300 win mag (those are common ones but you can look into more obscure rounds). If you're in central US or anywhere covered in forests you'd be fine getting a 30-30 lever action for 300$ and I personally would never put a scope on it.

Guns are my main hobby so I put a lot of money into custom rifles and hand reloading. I don't know much about specific budget models but you should know that a quality optic that holds a zero is important, different ammunition will hit in different places so stick to one brand, and to choose a brand that shoots well in your rifle because some just suck in some rifles.

mfw when those are all 7.62 rounds
>>
>>29990704
I have a poorfag buddy who uses a mosin to hunt with, he seems to be more than able to fill the freezer every season, I do know that he does his own reloads to keep the prices down.
>>
Get something on the larger side OP. A .243 or .270 would be great for deer but if to want to go something a little bigger (moose, bear, etc.) that would be a little light.

I would personally recommend anything in a 30 cal .308, .303, .30-06, .30-30, are all great all purpose big-game hunting calibers.
>>
>>29990809
Use a spear.
>>
>>29991372
They are all considered .30 caliber, not 7.62. While it may be technically correct, 7.62 is almost always in reference to 7.62 NATO, and to a slightly lesser extent 7.62x39
>>
>>29991469
.30-30 is enough for bear defense? I thought you had to get into 12ga slugs or fuck-you calibers like .45-70 to get reliable kill shots.
>>
>>29991299
.270 has a longer case and more bullet weight than .308 you fucking idly
>>
>>29992083
Shot placement is key. But with bears, bigger is better. When I've seen guys hunt them, they tend to hit from as far away as they can
>>
>>29990640
I suggest any bolt action in .243. Shoots flat and kicks light.
>>
>>29991215
8mm works too if you're a Mauserfag and completely averse to getting another bolt action.
>>
>>29992083

I .30-30 would be fine for hunting bears from a stand, but I wouldn't take it for defence. With good shot placement you would probably be okay (for black bears at least) but if a bear is charging you your shot placement is probably not going to be great. I would definitely recommend a 12g with slugs or a .45-70 for defence against bears.

Are there any places that I can hunt hog with a rifle around DFW? All the parks seem to only allow shotguns and BP
>>
.243 is a superb deer round. .270 is more than enough to take down anything on the north American continent. Same with .308 or 30-06. I personally hunt everything with 7mm Mag. Which is another good choice. And very common.
Rifle wise you can go with any of the major manufacturers. Ruger American, entry level Remington, entry level savage, howa (my choice)/weatherby.

No, at its heaviest .270 is still like a lightweight .308. You're right that it does have a longer case, though.

Learn how to reload because i've never seen a factory load for 100 gr .308 with 6 grain load which is fairly light for caliber.

This allows you to not only shoot medium game but now small game and if you're into it, long range high speed shots.

Winchester used to make .30 WCF "short range" for their 84 model and it's a shame its not made anymore
