Haven't bought an upper yet, wondering what would be best for home defense. I've heard that 16 inch barrels have gassing issues if it has a carbine length gas system, or am I just spouting bullshit?

What would be recommended otherwise?

I'm considering getting either the Leupold VX-6 CMR2 or Burris XTR II 1-8. Obviously because I'm an elite operator who'll be doing dangerous missions and not just for carbine matches and classes and generally fucking around with my AR.

Both are around $1000 with a mount. I'm leaning a little more towards the Leupold as it weighs less and the Motion sense thing (see above operator needs). Has any tried both? Or at least the XTR 1-5 since the 1-8 just came out.
>>
>>29977033
A carbine gas system on a 16 inch gun will be fine, mid length is just prefered because it usually translates to a marginally softer shooting rifle. There has been some noise about reconsidering carbine length systems again, especially when going from suppressed to unsupressed without using an adjustable gas block. Hanson Barrels are carbine length for this reason and make for interesting reading.

Anyway, in regards to home defense, I don't find 16 inch guns any less capable than 14.5 or 13.7, considering the difference is usually about an inch once you pin and weld a muzzle device.

If I were in your shoes I would just get a 16 inch barrel from a reputable manufacturer, preferably in mid length.

If you're just building one try finding a build party or something

Not sure about the fun or price being much of a difference, but the available ranges and competition divisions make sense. I didn't mean to offend, I was just genuinely curious why people go with such an odd compromise.

He doesn't seem to be hating, but more curious as to why the AR platform?

There are a lot of pistol caliber carbines out there that are pretty good for the price.

Personally, I like having many different guns, so the idea of multiple barreled upper but only 1 or 2 receivers doesn't really make sense to me.

>>29978833
Oh, I''m not saying you specifically, but I know quite a few people who just buy uppers, which is fine

>Maybe, but I like ARs
That's fine too, I just prefer diversity in my collection

The real problem with pistol caliber AR carbines is size
I mean sure, you can get the troy pdw stock and make it an SBR or you could just get the MPX/ APC9/ Scorpion Evo/ or whatever other alternatives there are.

Also, the reason most in here post their 5.56/.223 ARs is because (Most I would assume) have different guns for different calibers, and most people directly associate AR-15/M4/M16 with 5.56, which is a pretty good round, so why differ with a (usually) special snowflake
>>
>>29978692
many ranges don't allow rifle caliber and pistol caliber guns to be shot on the same lanes, buying a PCC and kitting it like your main AR allows you to practice more completely with less hassle of switching ranges and shit

I don't think you know what MOA is if you believe it works like that.

MOA is a measure of angle. .5 inch at 50 yards is 1 MOA, 1 inch at 100 is 1 MOA, 6 inches at 600 is 1 MOA.. are you new here?

Hey noobfag here looking for a scary black gun before trump gets shitstomped and loses the senate too.

I just need any AR. I have a stripped lower. Are PSA lower parts kits ok?

I know not to buy an upper from them(or atleast only their FN barrel ones).

I am only assembling my lower to get very familar with the gun(first non pistol gun)

I cant Fuck it up to bad right? Am a competent in man skills(Work in trades) Are there any common mistakes? It seem simple just tap in some lubed pins and some springs while being careful to not leave idiot marks.

Also can someone point me to some places that will have sales memorial day that are not PSA.

Dont want to be a poorfag and make a shit rifle. What places are there inbetween PSA and the Rainier arms "High-end AR15 Parts and Accessories" store that i live fairly close too.

Any advice beyond LURK MORE(which is where the majority of my knowledge comes from.
>>
>>29978931
You either dont know how MOA work, how math works, or both. Fucking retard. .395 inches at 50m is .689 MOA. MOA at 20k or 10 meters is the same measurement.
>>
>>29978994
their LPKs are okay, but they are milspec so expect a shitty single stage trigger.

Buying a dual ejector bolt upgrade from BCM would be a solid investment.

worst common mistake: don't over torque your barrel, 30-90 ft-lbs is the range you are shooting for.
>>
>>29979032
>implying a Minute Of Angle is a length measurement and not angular measure

Will not be assembing the upper just buying one off the shelf.

I once owned a Lc9 so any trigger has to be better than that.

But what other sites are there? Am REALLY new fag to buying online. Is there a handy /arg/ approved store list.

Can't say I've seen a /k/ approved list, but I have done fine with components bought from DSG Arms, PSA, and Brownells.

Take that with a grain of salt, however, as I have only ever built my own.

Some good suppliers of ready built uppers or rifles in general are: Rock River Arms, LaRue Tactical, LWRC, Lewis Machine & Tool, and Stag Arms.

A lot of people will shit on stag arms for being low cost, but I shit you not, the most precise rifle I have ever shot is the Stag Model 7, routinely printed sub 1/2 MOA five shot groups at 200 yards and on occasion would shoot as tight as .2 MOA.

I would suggest you look into RRA and Stag for cost friendly options which still deliver good performance.

For my first semi-auto, non .22lr rifle, I'm thinking about building an AR. I want to do it as soon as possible however, as I'm guessing prices are going to take a steep hike as we near November. Problem is I don't really know what parts I should spend big on, and which ones I can get away with spending less. I'd like to keep the total build under $1200-1300 including an optic, but if I go a bit over, so be it.
Who makes quality, and also visually appealing, uppers/lowers, that aren't priced way out of budget? I care about muh aesthetics, but function beats out form, so if I can't get a sexy receiver while staying in budget, so be it.
I'd like to eventually make it an SBR, but should I start it out as a pistol with a brace, or make it a compliant length rifle and then buy a shorter barrel later down the road?
