Moras aren't full tang. They're fifteen dollar knives that are 3/4 tang. It's an incredible knife for the cost and comparing a mora to an expensive full tang knife is asinine, a full tang offers a minuscule amount of improvement that doesn't justify the price unless you're actively trying to waste money.

I wouldnt say miniscule amount of improvement. Well I guess it depends what you use it for. If you carry an axe or hatchet with you for hacking or batoning you can probably live with a non full tang. My own bad experiences with stuff like above, the cable tang that I prefer a fulk tang. Full tang doesnt have to be that expensive though.

Mora knives are like 4 bucks a pop here in Sweden.

We don't (usually) even sharpen the fuckers, they're considered disposable. Once they got too dull they go in the box of trash knives in the garage and get used to scrape rust and pry apart shit.
I've broken about 6 or 7 of them.

None have broken at the tang, and all of them took very serious abuse before they broke.

The rat-tail tang is not a weak point of a Mora.
You'll snap the blade before the tang breaks.

The handle will crack if you use it too hard.

Keep one blade and stick to it.
Always carry it in the same pocket, preferably facing in the same direction.

Drawing the knife needs to be as quick and instinctive as blinking.
Rotating various different knives, or guns for that matter, ruins passive muscle memory training.

So I bought a cheap Arkansas honing stone and sharpening stone set. The thing is, I have no idea how to use it properly.

Trial and error anon, keep practicing and once you fuck up enough you'll get it. Sharpen, try cutting, sharpen again, try cutting until you get it to cut decently, once you've got that you can move onto consistency and choosing your angles. Probably also helps if you start with a knife that's got a fairly straight edge.

Depends entirely on what you want. Buck 110 is solid as fuck. It's simple, it just fucking works. Can't be opened with one hand though, so no longer my choice for EDC

Lower end Spydercos are pretty great, made in China but who cares? I'd suggest the Tenacious. It's a damn good design, good steel, easily one handed openable, good length, not automatic/assisted opening.

CRKT m16 is pretty great. Haven't owned one but used them plenty. Easy to open one handed, loads of options for your blade length and type.

Cold Steel Finn Wolf is awesome. Get that Mora ok? If you like that knife and wonder "why in the fuck is there not a folding Mora? Why won't they take my damn money?" Well, this is it. It's a folding Scandinavian grind knife. It's stupid sharp. It's nigh on indestructible, the locks Cold Steel makes are fantastic. That Scandinavian grind makes it so easy to sharpen anyone can do it. Now for the bad stuff. It's Cold Steel, that might be a bad thing to you. The blade is thicker than I'd prefer. It's difficult to open one handed, the thumbstud kinda sucks.

The Mora is the best fixed option.
The Finn Wolf, although it might be difficult to open, seems to be the best choice for folders.
I like the Buck but I want it to at least be possible to open with one hand. The Finn might be difficult, but at least it's possible, whereas the 110 is not.

Makes sense and I agree fully. I carry the Spyderco as my EDC, frankly I used to hate the way it looks. Then one day something clicked in my head and I love it like everyone else seems to. The goofy looking blade positioning is actually REALLY useful, you get the thumb right in there and have amazing control and ability to exert force. The crazy looking hole is an amazingly easy way to open the knife.

But, I never would have owned one before I suddenly liked them.

Finn wolf I keep in my backpack with all my shit in my car. It's a great knife to have around.

Everyone I know, myself included, who has ever bought a Mora has instantly and fully fallen in love. They're just awesome in so many ways, price included. If the same happens to you, you will definitely end up wanting a folding version of it.

I'm not sure how to feel about the Mora Companion. It seems asinine to me to have a blade smaller than the handle on a fixed blade knife. Especially since the blade is not very wide. I haven't handled one in person, but I imagine the chunky handle would be hard to control the small blade with.
Also, do you happen to know if any major sporting/outdoor retail stores carry the CS Finn or Moras? I'd like to handle both IRL to decide which one I want to spend the money on.

Can none of you open a buck 110 one handed ? I carried one when I was a teenager in my right back pocket with the blade up tip facing right, that way when you reach in your pocket you grab the blade. As soon As you clear your pocket give your hand a downward flick and the handle will swing right open.

Or deploy from a sheath the same way, by carrying it tip up in sheath .

Here's a video of it. Is it as convenient as a thumb stud ? No. But it works . And If you're going to carry a 110 you should know how to do this well.

Buy an opinel, cheap carbon steel that sharpens easily and it won't matter if you screw it up, and then just start trying. There are tons of videos out there . I just started learning as well.

Some tips from my experience
>learn to feel the existing bevel
>practice strokes with even pressure and angle
>do tip trailing strokes when finishing a knife
>use honing oil
>spend most of your time on course stones, seriously you can get it really sharp just using a rough one. The sharper it is going from course to smooth grit the less work you have to do with the fine stones.

The black handled one is 45 on Amazon. It's a great hunting knife . It's NOT a survival knife . Hallow ground, so it's not great for heavy cutting tasks, it's got a stick tang I believe ? Not a full tang.

The sheath is good , and it holds an edge well. It makes a great knife to cut and pierce flesh. Would make a good fighting knife too. But not a woods knife .

Yeh - it's a traditional slipjoint folder with no pocket clip or any of the typical features of modern edc folders, but I carry a fixed blade for that. This is my backup pocket knife - less than one ounce practically disappears in my pocket.

Also have a gec#65 and a techno on rotation for my edc needs.

I wanted a lightweight spork for backpacking and maybe something that was also pleasing to look at. The American Kami one fits the bill, except in the pictures I couldn't tell how huge the bowl was on the spoon part. I can barely fit it in my mouth. It's bigger than a soup spoon, it's approaching fucking ladle size. I would grind it down but then I'd ruin the anodizing, which is one of the reasons why I got it in the first place.

Seriously, I don't know if I'm supposed to use it from the sides or what, but if I actually used it to eat a meal the corners of my mouth would get torn up from using it.

yes those cheap high grit diamond plates are way too aggressive to use on a blade that just needs a touchup. i would sooner consider them for turning a piece of sheet metal into a blade before putting my knife edge to it. bringing edges to blades can be done with almost anything once you get familiar with it. although using leather for a strop is really creme de la creme. nylon textile can be used as a strop if it doesnt have much give, but the nylon wears out pretty quickly if you do that. one of the benefits of a leather sheath is its modularity as a strop

I'm looking for a new pocketknife. I don't need anything huge, 3" blade is on the larger end for what I'll be using it for. I've been using a box cutter and it's been doing everything I need it to do, frankly, but I'm looking to invest in some man jewelry. I want a nice knife from a custom maker, something I'll be able to enjoy every time I take it out to use it. Stainless steel preferred on the blade.

For under three inches, Spyderco persistence is a solid liner lock folder for 34ish bucks. Kershaw has the cryo which is a speed assisted frame lock. Crkt has various in the same price and size range.

Fixed blades: the Crkt spew is nice but a bit thin, about 25 bucks if I remember properly. Boker has various small fixed blades of varying prices, personally I carry the rhino. Esee has many, that are up towards 50-100 depending on what you want and the size, with or without handle scales, but are well worth the money.
