>>
>>29901116

Depends which branch you'd want to join. With an art degree your choices are limited to the army and marine corps for the most part these days, you may want to check with a recruiter since maybe there is some wiggle room.

For example, to be a 17d in the air force you need a cs/it/is degree or some other stem degree with 24 units of cs undergrad coursework.

>>29901098

Brutal, try not to break yourself while attempting to keep up with the kids.

The only thing that would be more depressing than being a 30-something junior enlisted person is getting medically separated in training and having to figure out some other way to get a job.
>>
>>29901166
Yeah I was planning on going Army. My BA is in history if that counts for anything.
>>
>>29901068
You'll get called grandpa a lot. 20 year olds will be your boss at first.

After that shits pretty normal. Even an e3 can tell an e4 to fuck off once you're not a boot. Or even an e5, working party after I spent an hour at the chowhall.

Lcpl Schmuckatelli and me go way back.
>>
>>29901154
i wasn't asking for advice you faggot little nigger, thanks for explaining the word filter for me though. what would I have done without your help t b h f a m?
>>29901166
yes, I am old. will try not to get broken. I've always wanted to join, but had the good fortune of having a very nice job right out of high school, so the army was sort of put on the backburner. but last year, the industry I was in sort of imploded, so I said "now or never"
>>
>>29901176
well if your planning army with a ba already go officer. if you enlist you will be an e4 slick sleave (no deployment patch).
>>
>>29901176

You're going to have to make contact with a recruiter to see if being an officer is an option for you. I wouldn't just blindly accept what the recruiting websites say, I have seen a couple people with art degrees get waivered into air force ots for a couple jobs like administration and such.

I'm torn on whether I should be recommending enlisting to people like you in /meg/ if going officer isn't an option. It sucks and it is definitely a waste of your life if you have prospects outside of the military, but the humility and discipline you gain from being treated like shit also makes you a better person.
>>
>>29901068
Average enlistment age is like 21. Just don't bring up your age for anything and no one will give a shit.

You just have to make sure your edgelordy ass has a good plan for separation or else the counselings you'll undoubtedly rack up whilst being a faggot on a daily basis will haunt you forever if you're trying to stay in to retirement.

>>
>>29901228

>yes, I am old...

I'm 31 and getting ready for air force ots. Even though on youtube it looks like day camp I am still a little worried since my knees are shit due to six years in the Marine Corps out of high school.

I'm going into the guard since I have a good job so honestly I'm thinking that I'm not even going to try and keep up, that I'll just shoot for the 30 and over high pft score - as soon as I hit the time in grade requirement for each rank I'll automatically get it. I'm not sure if my pride will allow that, but I'm noticing as I train that if I run two days in a row my knees are a little swollen on the second day.

What industry did you work in?

well, first of all, you should appeal that decision if you still can. If you were passed out, in the car, and you did not drive it and have proof of that in some way in could be erased.

It might affect enlistment. It definitely will affect a commission to officer. So enlisting might be the way to go.

>>
>>29901385
Good for you. I stand to make $60k next year with my degree.

I could get a recommendation letter from any man I served with. The e5 I punked was a headquarters platoon POG who was up his own fat black ass, and I'd do it all over again. My and my bro from weapons platoon hid under our racks once to avoid formation and work detail.

K.
>>
>>29902036

Not that anon but I'd honestly prefer to make e6 pay and be out than make like 10k more or so and have stayed in.

I just think about adult shit that kids don't realize like how you're never able to own a house, or at least you'd have to worry about selling it every three years or so.

I think the idea situation if you were to go active enlisted would be to get out after your first term with your gi bill and go reserve or guard while finishing your undergrad, commission as a guard dude or reservist after you're done and work on getting a good civilian job.

Look into the street to seat program since you already have a BA. It's be kinda foolish to enlist with a degree then try to go warrant without exploring that option first. What specific questions do you have.

So, commissioning via OCS in the army. Lets say somebody finishes out dead middle of their OCS class. Would they still stand a pretty good chance to branch into a combat arms MOS by the end of it? I am talking stuff like infantry, artillery, air defense artillery, Engineer, etc.
Also, how competitive is it to branch ordnance or transportation? Intelligence?
Gonna bump with some operators.

Don't you have to have like ten years TIS to put in a warrant officer package if you were to go enlisted as X job?

Why do people even do that if their goal is to be helicopter pilots? I ask because when I at meps I heard kids talking about being pilots and I was just wondering what they were doing joining as a combat engineer or whatever.

The TIS requirement is bullshit, I've known kids who put in their packets as E-3s, maybe it's specific to a very in demand mos that you sign on for X amount of years minimum in your contract. For some people, being in already is their best route to becoming a pilot, but I would not recommend that for you.

How difficult is it to apply for Ranger while on active duty?

I could spend up to 18 months waiting for an option 40 contract, or I could ship out in a month and get the $20k quick enlist bonus.

would enlisting without the opt40 make the process longer/more difficult?
MOS would be 25s

Yes, you get to choose your mos.

The exception is that 03s get assigned one of the jobs in their fields near the end of itb. Maybe someone who was an 03 and not a shitposter could talk about what that is like since I wasn't one - my friend who I was in with at the beginning of the war as an 03 said that assignment was random, not sure if that is the case anymore.
>>
>>29903048
I'd say the most sought after are infantry, aviation, engineers, artillery, armor and intel.
>>
>>29903063
If you have an Infantry contract you get assigned MOS after about 1 month in SOI ITB. Either 0311 or weapons company.

Or you went open contract and congratulations you're a grunt lol. That's rarer but I knew a few lost souls that happened to.
>>
>>29903075

>>
>>29903058

>>
>>29903130
Ordanance is not a sought after field, as officers do not do much hands on EOD work.

I want to go 35. I have determined that 35N is a solid MOS, which builds up a desirable skillset for the private sector. Am I wrong?

Also

35M obviously sounds like the coolest MOS, with the option for language school, etc., but is a good option? Isn't HUMINT slowly going out of trend?
>>
>>29903165

Depends how hard your willing to hustle. You can get VA home loan or USAA loans, VA will pay for about 5 mortgages before things start getting tricky. You only have to live in your house for a year. Apply all BAH towards mortgage, when time is up either rent to a bro, or find a company and charge a little under BAH. Continue cycle for posts.

When you retire in 20 years chose property you liked nearest post, liquidate rest, or keep renting for residual income and go visit buddies across country.

The thing is military everything in your life is paid for, and you make a shit ton of money ontop of that. No other jobs offer BAH and BAS so a nigga can sleep and eat, and while the healthcare blows, on the civvy side you gotta pay for some of the shit.

Best bet imo for young cats is pick an MOS that translates civvy side, or has an atrocious AIT. 68A BMET would have good job opportunities outside the green weeny and ait is 44 weeks, theres also some 25 series that are longer.

The longer it is, the more you learn, the likely hood of more quals, and less training needed on civvy side. They will like that you spent 44 weeks of training, and best part is with basic thats already a year off your contract by the time you hit your unit, plus these jobs youll sleep in your bed probably every night and not have to go to the field too often. When you deploy it will be fobbit lyfe.

Also while your in the best a young person could do if they picked a job that wont fuck them over like infantry or cav in the field all the goddamn time and working 12 hour days. Is to go to a community college, either local or local to your state. Do an online class and either a night class or weekend class. These count for promo points (get promoted more $$$ & sham and looks better), wont cost much if anything, and will save that GI bill money. You'll need close to 2 years of bullshit classes anyways even at a community college or university.
>>
>>29903201

I originally wanted to go Mike to Lima, but the more and more I found out about it, the more Lima sounded like ass. seems the only reason to reclass to that is to be a fed when you're out (which is cool, if that's what you want to do). I've heard literally no high-speed shit about this MOS, red-pill me anon.

>also, are the only 2 "feeder" MOS 35F and 35M? or can anyone reclass as long as they have a language or are in Intel?
>>
>>29903283

I'm 31 and I did my time. You can only get a zero down VA loan once every five years; either being a property manager yourself would be a nightmare for me, and hiring a company would simply be too expensive since no kid would be willing to eat that expense to rent your place so they would likely opt for base housing or some apartment.

You're definitely right about the hustle, it just isn't viable until you're like an e6 and you have the money to pull it off. Even with bah as an e3 I can't think of too many places where you'd actually have the income to get a home loan, 29 Palms is the only place that comes to mind.

I make almost $30k more as an acqdemo employee over my military officer and snco counterparts. It is just silly to try and claim money as an incentive to stay in, unless you were sitting around jacking off for ~4 years and didn't get your degree or you signed for a shit mos.

So just throwing some info out there and looking for info from you fellow vets and service members.

Released from AD in 2013 with honorable. Army.

Why? I have no idea, healthcare, tuition assistance, and training into a job that is non-combat and actually useful.

Tech jobs.

Just stay away from motor t, generator mech and air conditioners. They are the retards of the tech fields and none of those will do anything for you upon separation; honestly helo and fixed wing mech won't do shit for you either since they pay shitty money and the jobs have been incredibly sparse since like 2010 - you also need the a&p license to get in anywhere but that is no big deal, the nojobz is a more important point.

Going to MEPS for the Army tomorrow
Last week my recruiter said he could get me an infantry contract, but today he called and said all that was left in the combat arms area was a 13B Cannon, and I would leave in a month and get a 25k bonus, but I dont really care about money.
I got a 96 on the ASVAB, but I really wanted to go infantry to challenge myself and redeem my soul through physical work, I haven't signed anything yet.
what do?

Anything in electronics maintenance or tactical data systems is money. USMC network operations is okay but an air force guy would always get hired over you because their school follows comptia curriculum and the marine corps doesn't.

35M will not ever be phased out. From whom did you hear such rabble?

35M may eventually be phased to a higher level job, along the lines of 35L, in order to breed a higher base army knowledge among the mikes. But as it is, most mikes are cross trains and they, frankly, suck dick at the job. And currently we're getting a big push for language, which means we're getting that milky FLPP train without having to stress every day at DLI about losing our jobs or getting kicked out for failing a stupid test administered by people who barely speak English.

I meant to state that having a damaged sense of smell doesn't disqualify you from anything so there is no reason to lie about it and risk getting kicked out for fraudulent enlistment.

Are you trying to get rid of her? It's difficult enough if you ship off and you rarely get to go home and see her. If she joins too then you'll have a nightmare trying to get leave at the same time. It's a high risk enough that she'll cheat on you if the stays home, if she's in the armed forces too then you'll have a 100% guarantee of cheating and everything will go to shit.

It's not likely at all that you'll end up being in the same place. It won't be a boyfriend-girlfriend adventure.

Going in to take my ASVAB tomorrow then off to my physical the next day. Going Marine Reserves hopefully, any tips?

What are the logistics of becoming a Muh-reen Raider, seems interesting.

Civi here. Yes, I know marines are cult like, and get army's old gear whatever.... Im being serious about the question though

AF Security Forces is a fucking joke. Stay away from it. It's where the AF send reeee's who can't pass cook school. You will do nothing LE related and either watch a flight line, watch a nuke field, or check ID's at a chow hall. It's literally the worst off all the MP jobs and does not benefit you at all in the real world, especially not for civilian LE agencies. CG maritime LE is bad ass and for squared away dudes. Definitly go that route.
>>
>>29902710
The true answer is that "it depends" for every single freaking cycle at OCS. Like seriously every one is wildly different. Some cycles will have a huge group, 200 or so when everyone can get one of their top two with ease and everyone happy. Some cycles can barely make two skinny platoons with less than 40 graduate even when recycles get put in and youll see every kind of messed up allotment of slots. 1~ of each with 14 infantry slots. Hoo boy then youll see some backbiting and politics afoot in the company.

I'm of the opinion tho that as a PL or XO, your life will probably be the same no matter which branch you get. Once you make tracks you can transfer branches to whatever you want as long as you weren't a total dirtbag during your first contract.
>>
>>29906575
Sounds easy enough. Will it be a problem if my personality is a little, uh, bubbly? Should I stay pretty quiet?

Is there any truth to the whole "not getting the MOS in your contract" myth or is that just grandad talking about 'nam again?

Should i give up the avionics trade to become a helicopter crewman? I just dont like maintenance anymore but aircraft maintenance has a lucrative civi sector

Anyone have any info on 15w? Seems like something I'd want to do on paper but I'd like to hear from someone with actual experience.

15w is is a bit thick but if that's what the manual calls for then stick to it.

who /marines/ here

first meeting with recruiter here got a 76 on practice asvab.

How autistic am i?
>>
>>29907110
you'll do fine
>>
>>29907127
havent had to do division and multiplication by hand since elementery school, if i practice that i know i could score very high. All the marine recruiters kind of shit their pants over it saying it was good but i imagine other branches have generally higher asvab scores
>>
>>29906427
pissing hot is not a dishonorable
>>
>>29907162
i was the same as you, then I took the actual test. not hard bro. i got a 77 on practice and an 85 on the real thing. YouTube ASVAB and watch a few refresher vids, you'll do fine
>>
>>29907162
>other branches have generally higher asvab scores
Talking with several recruiters from all the branches, no. As far as I'm concerned you have to be functionally retarded to not get at least a 40 But i've heard of multiple <15.

76 on is great on the pre test. I got a 67 on the practice and a 85 on the real thing no studying in between. With that score all my line scores were above 120 and could pick and choose what I wanted to do.

guy came into my work today and basically told me to consider the national guard or something like that. He told me I could basically live where I live now, with 1 month and two weeks in summer gone basically, with a chance of being deployed.

He said it would be good experience for me since im trying to be an LEO (I only have a few college classes under my belt). SOmething to consider or was he full of it?
>>
>>29907596
He's generally correct. But even being an MP doesn't translate that well to LEO since they have their own SOPs and ways of doing things, I guess he was referring to the discipline and training in general.
>>
>>29907596
That's basically what the guard is. Active duty guys WILL give you shit be aware.

If you plan on going law enforcement anyway why not just go 11X for three years though? Or even 31B.
>>
>>29907692
>active duty guys WILL give you shit
ok im an idiot. does this mean people who are fully enlisted (not reserves I mean) from major military branches give you shit for not committing fully to the Army or the marines or something? I don't thin kit would really bother me, but Id like to know if its for a reason or if its just hazing of other branches like I hear most of the military does to eachother

>why not go 11X or 31B
im still considering it, but im about to turn 25, and everyone I talk to keeps saying im too old.
>>
>>29907792
>but im about to turn 25, and everyone I talk to keeps saying im too old.
Fuck em. Someone will always have something negative to say. That's when I joined I don't have a single regret other than not losing the 100lbs earlier so I could join when I first considered it.

You want to do it? Do it.
>>
>>29907792
Mostly hazing, but some guys take the "weekend warrior" shit to heart. It's on the same level as the guys who take "chairforce" or "everyone in the navy is gay" shit a little too seriously.
>>
Prior enlisted marine here

K so I want to try and get an OCS slot. From my understanding from what my army friends say is that I dont get to pick an MOS or anything. Thats absolutely terrifying why is that even a thing? I want to eventually get into PSYOPS or MISO and from what I understand they dont take butter bars. Will a shit ass branch have an effect on me being able to do either of those things?

Am I going to get stuck as a food specialist platoon commander?
>>
>>29906672
fuck is bubbly. Yes be quiet,in basic under the radar, when you get to the unit you'll be brainwashed, be that way.

Work is work, when your off work your off work. When nco's talk to you stand at parade rest answer their questions or what they ask of you, don't call them bro, dont try and get comfortable with them. Dont talk too much, and dont give too much of your opinion, be comfortable and have good banter, but dont piss people off is basically waht it comes down to, and dont be that guy. What do i mean by that guy? For you if your bubbly it'll be that guy that talks to much, or cant shut the fuck up.

Watchout too, because fraternization can be a big deal. Some NCO's are really cool, total bro. Some act like it outside of work, but are psychopaths. The night before you'll be drinking with a psychopath bro-ing out at a strip club. The next he'll be smoking you in the morning because you have liqour on your breath, even though he was there too. Or one minute at work they'll be cool, the next heaven forbid you didnt stand at parade rest when talking to them as your working or some shit.

>>29906960
not anymore, those contracts are gone. If you do only do helicopters because fixed wing dont have as many options

>>29907863
>>29907792
Mostly its because after bct and ait you go home, while AD gotta travel and show up to a new unit and go through that hazefest. Ft couch ain't bad if your older, you can train in something practical, apply the experience to the workforce, utilize tuition assistance and get "preferential treatment". But also Nasty Girls give you a chance to develop connections and networks from others near you.

One thing i remember getting out with the RCCC? The end counselor guy for reserves and shit trying to get you to sign up. I talked to him he said he used to be a Nasty Girl forever before what he does now, said that all the AD guys that came off and showed up to unit he would get them a job at his restuarant to get em on their feet.

Just enlisted recently with the USAF, I'd be going in as an E3; Perfect vision and hearing and high 90s on the ASVAB. I'm not out of shape, but not a gym rat either.

I'm sitting on my ass until the recruiter gets back to me with an opening for either aircraft mechanic or avionics. I'm just wondering if it's possible to switch my asfc to EOD after I get my licensing in avionics or AnP. Either that, or switch to anything that would put me overseas that isn't necessarily special forces - I'm no pj.

Sorry if this is a stupid question; Recruiter is no help, obviously.
>>
>>29908296
I'll humor you/take the bait, since the thread is almost over and its late
>has happened to you before
you have shitty situational awareness if someone gained access to your food or drink. more than once.
>at MEPS
so your fucking boipussy is so desirable, that someone would be willing to ruin their career before it even starts, and quite possibly go to prison? i don't know how your recruitment process was, but it was a little more than
>hi nice to meet you anon, you're going to MEPS tomorrow, here's the hotel.
some kid went through a process to even get to that point, just to rape a dude?
>indent on genitals
i don't even know what this means
>travelled before and never had this reaction
yes, all hotels use Hotel Inc Brand Soap. I've stayed in many many hotels all over the country and world. every once in a while, the sheets might make you itch a little, or the soap in the bathroom might dry your skin out or make you break out
>1/10
pretty decent score, but since you made me reply, I'll give you a 6.
>>
>>29908407
Why not PJ?

>>29900098
What's life like after 18X? What career path do green berets follow after their service? PMC?
>>

I'm really not trying to play the "I was raped" card. I had a fingernail shaped indent on my shaft. It almost looked like someone with long/sharp fingernails just dug into my penis. I really wish I was making this up. I don't know how, but I woke up with an indentation or a mark on my shaft.

And yes, prior to my enlistment process a had a string of bad luck (parents were being slightly abusive and leaving food out with shit in it and gaslighting me, neighbors for seriously fucking with me and provoking me almost nonstop, some fags I knew were taking advantage of my shitty situation, even a gas station clerk slipped some hallucinogenic shit into one of my drinks)

My life was a cruel joke there for a while.
>>
>>29908501
get help and stop hanging around so many fags

>>29908501
I wake up with scratches on my face sometimes. Only logical conclusion is I'm the one that did it. I highly doubt it's my wife.

You scratched your own penis, and you're legitimately batshit.
>>
>>29908483
Just not fit enough, plus I'm good with electronics and EOD seems like it would be more my field.

PJ is too brutal.
>>
>>29908539
he tyler durdened himself at MEPS

>tfw your alterego is a gay rapist
>>
>>29908539
I am not bat shit. I may be wrong about the penis indentation, but the other things happened, which instilled paranoia and I simply couldn't be sure.
>>
>>29906550
This is such a fucking urban legend. You can't race your piss test to the lab by self-enrolling. Self-enrolling also doesn't automatically protect you, commanders are just supposed to take it into account when they determine how hard to fuck you.
>>
ausfag here if any of you are interested?
>>
>>29906722

In the Army, you get a job in your contract. If you fail to meet the requirements of the job you picked then you can get sent "needs of the Army".
>>
>>29907934

You're way overthinking this. Officer jobs are 90 % the same regardless of where you end up. You're a manager/planner. You aren't going to be doing the hands-on job, so it matters much less than you think.

The biggest difference is during your first couple years, but after that you're riding a desk regardless. Look into "branch detailing" if you're that concerned about it, it's where other branches with few O1/O2 slots loan their junior officers to branches with a lot of O1/O2 slots (like infantry) for the first few years of their career.
>>
>>29903877
Dude, don't be sad. I joined in 2012 with lesser scores then that. My first APFT in OSUT was a fucking 50. 10 correct push ups, 25 sit ups and a 28 min 2 mile and I weighted 220 points.

You going to get chewed up. You're going get make fun of, you're going get fucked up.

But if you can face those fears everyday and not quit, you'll become something more.

Because it happened to me. I was in Alpha Co. 2-58 under 4th Platoon Warriors and I was constantly made fun of and dissed because I was the weak link who couldn't do shit, but I didn't quit.

I saved my anger and used it to keep going. I swear to what ever deity out there that when I passed the 200 point break, I was in tears. And when I took my last APFT and did 63 push ups, 77 sit ups and a 1300 flat two mile run, I fucking showed everybody.

Sixteen weeks of hell that I will never forget and it makes that blue cord even more precious because now you know how far you can go if you just have heart.

Because in my opinion, the badass mutherfucker is not the one who can life 500 pounds or can do etc, etc.

The badass is the man who is constantly afraid yet he is the one who gears up and walk in the face of his greatest fears every single time.
