Define "relatively cheap". You can get some used Gen-1 stuff for < 100 bucks at best, but for new stuff, even gen-1 or 1+, you tend to need to pay at least 200$. Gen-2 and 3 on the other hand get exponentially more expensive, as in talking about thousands of dollars for proper goggles. That's little compared to thermal imaging goggles though, which can go up to 10k, or more.

That being said, the basic princibles are these:
-NV devices see IR light, which human eye cannot detect.
-Light passes through the device, which enhances it several thousand times. The result's projected out of the scope to the viewer's eyes.
-Gen 1 is pretty crap without external IR illuminator device or clear skies / moonlight. Gen 2 and up have much superior passive light intensification capabilities, and clearer image.

There's also these cheap "digital" night vision devices out there, that are pretty much just fancier versions of the night-vision mode found on old cam-corders. They do detect IR light as well, but instead of passing the light through chemical and lenses, it's all done digitally, and you see the result through these tiny TV screens in the devices. They only work up to few meters in complete darkness without extra IR lights, and are quite popular in kid's toys, including those silly CoD:MW bonus items they shipped with the collector's edition.

>>29836178
No. It would burn the device's optics.
However, those do look like potential thermal imagining devices, so they'd be fine in any lighting condition.

You CAN however wear even IR goggles during day time, if you wear caps with tiny hole in the middle on the lenses.
>>
>>29836215
Thank you based anon, any recommendations? Operating innawoods conditions if that info is neccessary.
>>
>>29836215
Let's say cheapest gen 2 out there that isn't the scope type that only fits over one eye.

what you want, ain't gonna be cheap. Gen-1 device without a strong external IR light won't help you much at all in dense woods, and anyone using any kind of IR detecting devices would spot that light from the distance.

I got pick related from Ebay some years ago for dirt cheap. Tried using it innawoods during my army refreshment training exercise. It was rainy mid-fall, and even with its tiny IR LED, you couldn't see jack shit. It works fine indoors and all, but alone it's pretty much a fancy toy.

450 bucks, minimum.

>450 bucks, minimum
Think you coukd show me a 1-1.5K offering?
>>
>>29836359
tried to look up Ebay again, all the good stuff I saw few years ago seems to have mysteriously disappeared. More item restrictions on the site or something?

Anyway, Google up. You'll see whats available in your area. Gen 1+ is the lowest I'd go at any point, while difference between Gen 2 and 3 is barely noticeable in most cases.
>>
>>29836320
if you made a mount that could bring this thing close to your eye and put an eotech in front of it or something could you use this as a combat night sight?

There's a fuckin burgular in the advertisement for it

Gen 1 is basically toy tier of NVG world. Great for indoor fun and thats it.

Gen 2 is kinda a mix of being useful but still hold to many toy like properties and does not have auto gating, very important to have in order not to burn out the Intensifier.

Gen 3 is your working tier.

the difference between top left and bottom right is amazing

bottom right looks like some cyan cellophane taped over a camera at daytime

Is this not solved simply by not turning it on during the day without the damn cap on?

>>29836437
there are Gen2 devices with auto-gating.
The "generation" really refers only to the intensifier technology in the tubes. Everything else's easy to tack-on if necessary. Performance-wise, there's very small difference in practice between Gen 2 and 3, while the jump from 1 to 2 is big.

Here you go anon, this is a releatively affordable night vision device. A flashlight.

Don't bother with nods unless you have the cash. Don't half ass it with Gen 1 garbage. You haven't even factored in the costs for something like a dbal or peq
>>

'Bay.
That is, if they even allow that stuff anymore.

What can temporarily blind a nvg user? Flares? A high lumen light burst?
>>
>>29837583
Nothing.
Seriously, that "lol bright loight blinds u if ya use NV!!!" shit is a pure myth. The output of the devices is very weak in reality. The intensifier tube is going to burn long before your eyes would get any damage.

IR is basically works the same way as a flashlight. You need a source of light, like the moon, the stars, or an IR light. The IR light reflects off of the objects and enters the goggles.

Thermals work differently, they detect differences in temperature and apply false color. They can operate without any source of light, whether visible or IR, and can be used in daylight.

Thermals tend to be more expensive, NV tends to be easier to use.

tl;dr - If you've got the money, get both.
>>
>>29836215
what's Gen 3 and on look like in those conditions?
>>
>>29838221
Not significantly much different from Gen 2. Bit less noise, more "color levels" forming the picture, meaning less extreme blacks and whites.
>>
anyone no anything about backscatter radiation? and types of goggles that work in that spectrum?

These actually work but they're gen 1-tier. While their sold variously as binoculars and goggles, the eyeclops nvgs have only one lens and one viewer over the right eye limiting your depth perception. This wrecks your actual natural night vision in your right eye leaving you night blind in one eye and equally without depth perception when you take them off. On top of it all, the built in IR lamp is weaksauce and you can't see past ten meters at best. If one were to have an IR spotlight like the vampir scope, their performance would probably improve greatly

But monocoles are literally the best type. Cyclops vision like OPs pic fucking sucks. Bifocal or that quad seal bull shit's alright, but you lose spacial awareness and depth perception with nvgs. Keeping one eye off nvgs makes sure you're not totally blind if they go out. And you can see the potholes in the path

Monocole nvgs with an IR illuminator and ir laser is king of the night

Armasight's having a sale right now, and Russian thunder has perst-4s, which are atleast better than peq-2s.
>>
so i'm going to be wearing aviator NVG's for work pretty soon. how good are they overall?
>>
>>29837816
I bought a pair of those, but the tubes were bust.

So I am buying

http://www.amazon.com/CTS-2-5-Inch-Rotatable-Camcorder-Camera/dp/B0053DDNW6?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

And going to attach it to a hat.
>>
>>29836359
http://www.armasight.com/night-vision/night-vision-monoculars/armasight-pvs14-gen-2-c-mg

Again, monoculars are better than Cyclops goggles by light-years, and honestly I prefer them to bifocals

>>29836524
Fucking this. And the mounting system. Helmets get pretty expensive pretty quick

All the reviews for that say it doesn't work well at night. I hope you're planning on buying/making an IR flashlight to go with it.
>>
>>29840587
Can confirm. I have one of these, and I'm fairly sure it's some kind of cheap digital setup with the very low power IR lamp. If you were to make them binocular and add a stronger lamp, you could actually do some low-intensity cheeki breeki.

Get a raspberry pi microcomputer, a cheap vr goggle kit, an IR camera, and an IR light source. There's detailed instructions on instructables, but I can't link the page here because my phone's being a complete fucking stankass right now. Just do an image search of pic related, I guess.
