Heya /k/

I'm looking at buying two knives for defense and wanted your input. I also wanted to give you a chance to show off your knife collections ( not just EDC ) so I made this thread. I'm hoping to learn a lot about knives from you. I also hope you enjoy discussing your knives with one-another.

As far as what I'm looking for; I'm looking for two similar knives ( so I can use them both well while practicing with one ) that I can alternate for carry. So far I'm thinking of this Obake series and the RSK MK5 an RSK MK 6 but am open toward other suggestions. While I do live in an urban area it should be noted I do travel and would like something that would be useful outdoors even though that isn't my primary concern with the knives. I also really like the cord system for the Obake knives.

Can /k/ help me?

-ka-bar is your best cost-to-quality option for a fixed blade

-don't pay more than $200 for any knife EVER

Yes this. Perfect for self defense because after you stab your enemy you unload a mag. In fact I think it works without stabbing your enemy.
>>
>>29800258
While a gun would be ideal for many things I sadly can't carry one.
>>29800048
I promise you I won't be paying that much.
>>
>>29800320
I'm not some spyderco fanboy, but they really do have the best EDC folders I've found over the last 10 years.

I alternate between a paramilitary 2 and a manix 2 xl, never had problems. I own one benchmade, an 860 bedlam. The lock up is >50% as strong as my manix 2 xl lock up.

If you're looking for an all around good full size folder, go for a spyderco manix 2 xl
>>
>>29800575
I'll keep that in mind; thanks!

>-don't pay more than $200 for any knife EVER
why do you guys get so ass blasted ?
>>
>>29800048
schrade has surpassed kabar in almost every class they compete in. the schf series is dumb high quality, regardless of price
>>
>>29800666
Not him, but used to carry a spyderco persistence, but stopped after a different knife failed and nearly took off my finger. For etc fixed blades, Crkt spew is a solid one, the boker rhino is a tank and boker has other solid small fixed blades. One that you should look at if you're willing to spend a bit more is the EKT companion. Haven't heard anything negative about it yet.
>>
>>29800666
fixed blades are only good if you're in the woods, on tour, or in a kitchen...

that being said, I love my ka-bar 1245 (US made), use it when camping/fishing/etc. for $75 it's amazing, (and the USMC equips its variants by default)
>>
>>29800782
elaborate and I will buy a schrade
>>
>>29800827
20 usd supplies you with full tang, upwards 1/4 in thick, 1095 steel which is such a rarity in itself, well designed blades. kabar is gaining a reputation of skating by on legacy, using partial tangs and cheap steels

the schf36/37 and 51+ are all excellent considerations for knives, budget aside. and when sat beside your standard kabar, is a clear victor. being said, i said standard kabar, as obviously kabar has high quality product that nobody would not trust their life to, but when it comes to net value, schrade impresses me more and more
>>
>>29800876
loooooool
ok
not saying schrade is bad cuz they aren't, but you are a fucking idiot

yes your point about it being china made is valid and ive questioned the heat treatment on them because of it, even though you have a warranty, which is useless if it breaks when you need it, but the verifiable qualities that i already mentioned make them almost the single most efficient purchase you can make

>>29800956
and what do you mean by collector? those are all the qualities of a tool for a person considering buying a tool. my point being, if harbor freight suddenly started making high quality tools for the same price, they would put everyone else out of business, and schrade seems to be trying just that
>>
>>29801004
what the fuck are you talking about? kabar sells shitty product at premium prices. they think you are so fucking stupid that youll pay for a good looking blade with no tang for 80 dollars.

spyderco is obviously good, and nobody said otherwise. you just start spouting shit to validate yourself?

Any under 2.5 inches? I'm looking at the Civet ( just saw it posted on a /out/ knife thread ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODUIDlJHFM0 ) and could, honestly, see myself carrying both if one were to be utilitarian and the other defensive.

Also looking at some Cold Steel models but the company is a bit off-putting to me.

No love for Falkniven ITT?

Also another pretty good reasonable priced fixed blade is the SOG seal pup.
>>
>>29801074
I use my boker rhino for everything, holds an edge well, well treated 440 c steel for about 40 bucks with a decent sheath. It's just a touch over 2.5 inch on the blade.

The spew is solid as well, good sheath and construction, but a bit thin. Crkt also has the hunt and fisch which is geared more outdoors, but could easily be edc'd. The minimalist line I have head good things about but never personally owned.

Boker also offers the trigonaut which is a somewhat larger knife but still easily concealable. This one would be over the 2.5 though. The boker gnome is under, the boker rambler should be almost exactly 2.5.

Overall cold steel doesn't make bad knives, they just seem a tad over priced to me but are overall solid.
>>
any of you own one the Shrade 1-piece survival knives? designed by Chris Reeves? they look sweet
>>
>>29801074
forgot to add, the civet looks pretty damn nice too. If you don't like any of the options I listed I'd say go for that

I'm looking for an EDC knife I can take most places, is not considered "frightening" or "scary" looking ( which is a stupidly vague legal concept ) and is well-suited toward urban environments. Does not hurt that drop-point blades have a lot of outdoor utility too.

That's just going to be a pain in the ass for you. It looks uncomfortable and those tools almost never really work that great. Do yourself a favor and get a decent multitool. Leatherman if you need pliers. Otherwise go for a Victorinox. They are super recognizable and people will not give you any shit for using it in public. Obviously, you will have to determine which one best suits your needs.
>>
>>29801108
+3 for SEAL pup, because that's how many of them I've purchased in a row. I used to use them on Zodiaks and general boat missions, then in Afghansitan.

They will rust if you wear the finish off of them by stabing sand, but they are super lightweight, work great for all but sawing wood, and I used them as throwing knives against blocks of wood and never did break a handle.
>>
>>29805626
The reason that I had to purchase 3 instead of 1 is because I kept giving them away to junior Marines during deployments, and having to buy myself another.

>HurrDurr my favorite knife company is teh best because reasons!
Really hard to compare different knife companies. They all have very different philosophies in design and purpose. Cold Steel makes decent combat knives and their blades can take an absolute beating, there's no doubt about that.
Benchmade makes all-around very good quality knives that tend to be very, very expensive. However, their customer service is second to none.
Spyderco knives are generally very good at slicing things with their FFG blades. However in my experience they don't make great work horse knives. Generally a little less expensive than Benchmade but customer service not as good.

That being said I like Spyderco best for what suits my needs. I only really carry Spyderco knives.

It's literally true. Knives are very good for murdering people, and utterly worthless for incapacitating an assailant before they can murder you.

Mace, an expanding baton, a tazer, bear spray, and particularly a gun are effective self-defense tools because they can incapacitate someone BEFORE they can injure you.

"Tactical knives" are only useful for mall ninja Jamal stabbing fantasies and nothing more.

Easy cold steel talwar 4 or 5.5 inch full serrations, America pm steel XHP (xhp is in my too 3 favorite steel right behind cpm M4) and it will only cost you 70-100 on amazon. Don't listen to these Meme clowns cold has step up there game tremendously since 2015 with the intro of new steels like xhp,cpm3V,BD1,s35vn,20cv they are now one of the greatest values in the knife industry in my humble opinion.

Try looking at this: http://www.crkt.com/M16-14-Special-Forces-Black-G10-Handle-Tanto-AutoLAWKS-Veff-Combo-Edge

CRKT has a surprisingly good number of tactical folders; a few of them being around 3.99-4.1inches.

And while not technically a tactical folder I'm going to recommend http://www.crkt.com/fossil-folding-pocket-knife-5471K?&search_id=1558466 given how easily the blade opens/locks. It also makes for a decent steak knife.

I would love a raJah like pic related but they have been discontinued a while ago.
I'm not a fan of plastic handles on the new rajahs, that's not to say their not strong they are, it's just I dont like the hand feel of plastic. If I had to pick I'd get they rajah 2 in BD1

As far as the cold steel Colossus it's not for me at all, huge handle vs blade, wierd dimples in g10 that creep me out for some reason, and a spoon shaped blade. Just not my type of knife but overall a great value.

The knife I really want from coldsteel is the 3max in 20cv I'm just not willing to spend $300-400 if it drops to $200-230 I'll grab that tank in a heartbeat.

Fixed blade>Triad lock>powerlock, axis lock>compression lock>bolt lock>back lock>frame lock>liner lock. IMHO that's tfrom best to worst in heavy use/combat.

Of course I didn't mention all the variability in manufacturing technique and materials used. So some words may be as strong or stronger depending who and how they make it. I had 2 crkts liner lock with the autolawks slip on me and bind up from only slashing at a 1/8 tree branch.

And with my ak47 with xhp I've chomped dozens of 1/2 -2 inch branches with no problems, hell with the new dlc coating you can even tell that I've used this knife.

I'm not a steel expert I'm just an enthusiastic but the way I can tell if im going to like a steel is how it reacts to sharpening(does it grind easy, does it feel glassy or chalky when I'm grinding ect.) and the keenness of Edge it wil take/hold, also corrosion resistance can be important depending where I'm using my knife. For example I love cpm M4 but it rusts fairly easily, however it's still my favorite because of its amazing toughness and crazy sharp edge I can put on it.

So for me XHP is awesome because I love the way it grinds (with my stones) I love how keen I can get the edge, I love how long it keeps it's edge and I love that I don't have to worry about rusting.

Now A steel I'm not a fan of is s90v. It feels like glass when sharping and takes forever to get the keenest of edge I like. It also with lose its keen edge fairly quickly but maintain its working edge for fucking ever. But others may love s90v, they may have better sharpening equipment/skills or whatever. What I'm trying to say is no modern steels are that much better or worse than each other it all depends on what characteristics you're looking for and how easily you can work the steel.

I got this emerson wave opener a little while back. It does a good job, usually gets them in one try, and its SO handy to have an opener clipped to my pocket. I used to carry one on my keys but that was a little annoying to keep grabbing my keys every time I wanted to open a bottle. Fifty bucks is a bit much to spend on a bottle opener, but It's one of my favorites.

The answer is easy:

One of those companies makes the thinnest blade geometries out of any production folding knife maker.

One of them offers the largest variety of steels in their knives.

One of them was so serious about getting their heat treatments right that they bought their own CATRA testing machine.

One of them offers the greatest variety of blade lengths, thicknesses, tip profiles, locking mechanisms and handle materials.

One of them offers these blades which are functionally superior at significantly lower prices on average.

Spyderco.

Is there a purpose to buying a Tanto point knife?
Realistically. I need a toolbox/general purpose type thing.

What kind of blade profiles do people really need?

Seems like sheepsfoot or something is ideal for most utility work.

Tanto is a good box cutter-tier knife. Or just a decent clean cutter in general due to the uniformity of the blade. Also good for puncturing things, but then again most knives are

Eh, I abuse the everloving crap out of it for years and still haven't replaced the blade. Only sharpened it.

Frankly I think a hatchet, sturdy drop point with an exposed tang for hammering, and pen-knife sheepsfoot would be the ideal combo.

I think people underestimate the value of a small blade with good control...
and hatchets. Seriously what is the obsession with chopping shit like the knife is a bolo/machette when it's not.

Please explain to me how you can use a knife can be a "deterrent" unless you are pulling it BEFORE Tyrone pulls a weapon?

In which case you are brandishing by definition, and poor innocent dindu nuffin Tyrone is going to tell the cops how you iz racis and you pulled a knife on him unprovoked.

You fucking basement dwelling fedora wearing mall ninja faggots need to get the idea that you are going to pull a knife on Jamal to "defend yourself" out of your heads right now, before you get yourself sent to jail or shot.

"Tactical" folders are utterly retarded nonsense. Knives have no tactical application outside of the military (I.e. an OFFENSIVE roll).

In the civilian world they are only useful as cutting tools, or at least well designed knives are. Those "tactical folders" idiots buy are actually TERRIBLE as cutting tools, which essentially makes them nothing more than toys and/or locket jewelry.

Functional for what? For self-defense, trying to flip it open under stress will be pretty difficult without tons of training with them, and only the simpler openings will work. For utility, they should be okay (it's what they were originally designed for), though there's really no advantage to using them.

Because folding knife buyers in general don't actually use their knives much, if at all, so practical features mean nothing and it's what "looks cool" that sells.

Original anon that noted on ziptie, I'm not saying that the knife is bad, just remarking that it needs enhancement with a ziptie. Would the knife be even better with a thumbstud where the hole is?
>>
>>29836492
No. I took the thumbstud off and never looked back. Edc'd it for half a year with thumbstud and half a year with ziptie. The mod makes it just stupid-easy. Although besides my cousin's SOG Pentagon, I think it was my favorite unassisted thumbstud opener.

It just didnt seem necessary after the initial 'woa cool!' wore off. Grew to hate it, didnt like it sticking out the back of the knife when closed and i didnt want the finger guard anyways. I may order a blackwash blade for it just because i loved it so much on my 566.
>>
It's pricier, but I think you get a lot for what you pay for. I'll probably get an Endura Wave one day though. You have to remember that after a certain point you are just paying for aesthetics and names. A griptilian is basically a 940 without "Osborne" and without metal scales. I went for the 940 because it is a reputable knife that looked the best to me in my budget. The price is a little inflated, but I'd still recommend it to anyone. Only you can say if it's worth the money to you though.

Is it open to the public or an industry event?
>>
>>29839725
Open to the public, with an $18 ticket of course. In addition to all the custom makers, production shops have great deals like $100 Microtech Ultratechs for example.
>>
>>29839803
Buy a shitload of them and sell them on Ebay as new in the box
>>
>>29838825
The benchmade is over 100 more than the endura. Obviously, it is better knife with an ultra light weight, great steel, and a much more user friendly locking system. If you don't lose stuff regularly and you're not a poorfag, then it's a good choice.

Posting underrated second version of the SOG SEAL Pup in AUS 8.

The original (bottom) pre-2011 version was in AUS 6 with a slightly different shape and longer ricasso.

The new version features the same AUS 8 with cryogenic heat treatment as all SOG's premier knives, although both knives were well received, the new SEAL pup is probably the best sub 5" blade on the market for the price.

kershaw won't sell single blades do you know another place to get them? I've tried getting a normal stainless blade for my 0560.
>>
>>29840580
I guess no one wanted it without the flipper. One guy bid against me, auction started at 100. I was talking about the 566 when i mentioned the bar. You can heat titanium up and it turns colors, look it up on youtube all you do is burn it. I used a camp stove. Its a 9mm, got the idea from ebay. You can buy them on there for 10 bucks or so.

I figured id just say i broke mine and needed to order a replacement blade. If that doesnt work i suppose im screwed on that idea.

Is zero tolerance a subsidiary of kershaw?
>>
>>29846096
No zt is a subsidiary of kai, as is kershaw.
>>
>>29846096
>>29846150

ZT and Kershaw are both subsidiaries of KAI, as are Shun and that new fake Japanese outdoor knife making brand they started.

They are largely a marketing driven company that doesn't give two shits about their heat treatments or the functionality of their knives in general.

People who collect knives like they are postage stamps LOVE them, people who actually use their knives regularly avoid their products like the plague.
>>
>>29846230
So kershaw and ZT aren't that good huh? How come the leek is the gold standard for the poormans EDC
>>
>>29846230
Wew lad you are a fucking gem aren't ya
Fuckin idiot
>>
>>29846265

Kershaws are not typically purchased by people who would notice the bargain bin heat treatments.

Basically they chronically tend to run their steels on the soft side for Kershaw, or fail to have tight enough tolerances or QC on their heat treats for ZT and Shun.

The issues with Shun's being excessively brittle and prone to chipping is well known on kitchen knife forums, the internet is well aware of ZTs early issues with ELMAX and you can look up for yourself how chronically poorly ZTs tend to fair I'm edge retention comparisons against Benchmades and Spydercos.
>>
>>29846230
lol fuckin fanboys can't handle how ZT destroys BM and Spydergoy
>>

ZTs ELMAX is the best pocket steel I have ever fucked with it, it's amazing and outperforms my Caly 3 and my Osborne. But I probably just don't actually use my knives and I'm just shilling like you right? Go ahead and tell me how I'm wrong with more unsubstantiated bullshit and shit opinions. Do it faget.

OP here; I know we are near the cap and I just wanted to thank all of you who participated. In the end I still decided to go with the Obake as a first carry as it is cheap and I won't feel bad if I wreck it while sharpening it. Itt is turning out to be a very convenient, discrete carry but I have a lot of good ideas for future buys. Pics related; 1/4.

When I stand the knife still stays at the bottom of the pocket ( the ripcord is long enough ) in spite of the cord being wrapped around the lower-side button of my coveralls.

Aand here we go. The knife actually comes out of the sheath easily when pulled but I've actually been able to shake the sheath with blade inside and not have it come out. I also don't have to worry about cutting myself given the cord allows me to pull the sheath a good distance away from my body.
