I don't know what's more surprising to me, that somebody fired a bear out of a supersonic airplane, or that a bear was fired out of a supersonic airplane and the Soviets weren't the ones responsible for it.

Post other military "experiments"

Maybe the Soviets would have won the Cold War if they'd actually tried to live up to the stereotype, instead of letting the Americans take the lead in this area as well.

I think one of the directors wrote an article about the experience.

He is a scene from the aforementioned stalinist era propaganda movie they showed, the scene which is suppose to be the most anti american shows an american black soldier being beaten by white soldiers.

Hard to say it was a stereotype considering it was from 1949 actually, and what happened with the US civil rights movements and all that.
>>
>>29775966
john milius wrote and directed red dawn. he did this because he was a batshit militant right wing jew who missed vietnam because the marines rejected him due to asthma (he kept trying to sign up), not because of 'propaganda' or some sort of cia conspiracy or bullshit like that. funnily enough in a free country people go and do shit out of their own belief system, rather than because the government told them or paid them to. i know this can be a hard concept for non-free people and edgey teens to understand sometimes.

tl;dr freedom means people can do what they want. calling movies propaganda is probably more wrong than saying the directors were angry guys that wanted to kill people.
>>
>>29776564
>Propaganda is a form of biased communication, aimed at promoting or demoting certain views, perceptions or agendas.

Are you saying Red Dawn isn't trying to promote certain views?

But if you can muster all your brain cells in an attempt to read straight you'll probably see i didn't call the US movies propaganda but the soviet ones.
>>
>>29776778
>Are you saying Red Dawn isn't trying to promote certain views?
>But if you can muster all your brain cells in an attempt to read straight you'll probably see i didn't call the US movies propaganda but the soviet ones.

well done, you quoted the first line of wikipedia. read the rest of the article, particularly the context of the twentieth century when red dawn was made, although i understand that was before you were born.

but if you can muster all your brain cells in an attempt to read straight you'll probably see that in the west most of this shit was done because some guy felt like it, not because the government the government paid them to do it or wouldn't let them do anything else.
>>
>>29776564
Propaganda does not have to be produced by a government.
Red Dawn is as much a propaganda as it gets. Like Olympus has fallen.
tl;dr: Freedom means propaganda can be made by individuals.

The M48 nuclear artillery shell.

Capable of being fired out of any unmodified 155mm howitzer and delivering 72 tons of TNT to Ivan's post box. The replacement to the M48 would've been the M82 nuclear shell with a 2 kiloton warhead, but the shells were retired in 1992 after the Cold War ended.

It's a LOT more than 100 grains. Hell a .22-250 can be loaded with as much as 60 grains if you choose the correct powder, within SAAMI spec.

Now, there's a lot of "eargesplitten"s out there, based on everything from .338RUM and up, with various shoulder angles and neck length. At the low end, a bone-stock .338RUM has a case capacity of 113gr H20, and a normal powder charge of between 75 and 95 grains depending on powder. That's the parent case for the "small" loudenboomer. On the upper end of the not-strictly-as-a-joke versions you have the .416 Rigby parent (128gr H2O) and the .50BMG (292.8gr H2O). Giving it the "Ackley treatment" as shown in >>29775469
on the right with a 40* shoulder and a shorter neck usually gains between 5% and 10% case capacity, so at the high end you'd be looking at ~322gr H2O or ~290gr of something like US861 (one of the slowest, densest powders available).

Then you have the joke rounds, like .22/20mm Vulcan and .22/30mm with H2O capacities over 1000gr. Obviously, those cannot function. You'd burn through the neck trying to squeeze that much burning powder through a .22cal opening, as well as probably burn through the barrel. On the first shot.
>yfw someone made a *functioning* 50/155mm, then someone stuck a .30cal sabot in it to see what would happen
>>
>>29775717
No. That guy's just straight up lying out his ass.

The entire program from initial concept to "we discontinued it 20 years ago but still have to pay for the warehousing of parts for the one AFR unit that still flies them" is 3 trillion, and shrinking. Also, what's never mentioned is that the R&D costs are partially eaten by the civilian corporation and not charged to the government, as well as (per standard procurement contract) anything over final estimate for production. It's literally the total lifetime cost. And it's half of what the F15's will be, and that plane was generally considered "cheap", we just made a lot of them and are still flying them 40 years later.

I don't see why more of these weren't made earlier. Get some plebs with some basic training to crew them and you've got a weapon that can potentially seriously damage even the largest ship the USN fields. Obviously getting this weapon on target in the first place is tricky considering the USAF's dominance in the Pacific theatre given the time of manufacture.

AIM-4 (Air Intercept Missile) was the Falcon, which was a traditional AAM. It came in heat and radar guided modes.

AIR-2 (Air Intercept Rocket) was the Genie.

However, a prototype AIM-26 Falcon would have mated an improved version of the guided missile with a Genie warhead

It's just not the same when there's only one crew doing it.
Plus DARPA has this detached statistical side to it, that just kills the fun of nuking the moon.

It was the best when the Soviets and the US were constantly trying to subtly outdo each other in PSYOPS.

>attacked Pearl Harbour without declaring war
they intended for the declaration of war to arrive just as the bombs were about to drop, didn't they?

at least that's what i remember, they wanted to stick to the letter of the rules, fucked up their timing and ended up declaring after the attack.
>>
>>29786944
The Jap ambassador didn't carry a declaration of war. He carried a declaration of breaking off diplomatic relations. Had his American counterpart not been late because of the shits, the end result would have been no different.

I've read a couple of accounts of the Japanese aviators on those carriers after they made the attack -- then found there was no declaration of war. They were devastated. They'd launched convinced they were gonna die, carried out this miracle, they were high as kites... then they find that oh, the enemy didn't have a clue we were coming.
>>
>>29785175
So do you think that the could have used prisoners/slaves as baka-bomb pilots, threatening to kill their families too if they miss the target?
>>
>>29786944

Yeah that's the version I learned in school, the war declaration got lost in the Japanese embassy because they were busy destroying documents that could be seized by the American government upon hostilities erupting.

The Japanese were apparently really damn good and destroying all their shit before the Americans could seize them, as they burned all their documents while the final surrender was being signed. This is why things for japan are poorly documented compared to any of the allied powers (post Soviet collapse) and Germany (where we have precise organization data, manufacture plans, delivery numbers and such).
>>
>>29787020

It's also why so many pictures of Japanese equipment from WWII are of terrible quality. A lot of their best imagery was burnt.

>>

Easy. Load one with enough concrete so it has the same weight and balance as an armed one. Then fly it around.
>>
>>29790300

Pretty much >>29790375

A training version with an inert warhead and no rocket was used to prep the pilots.

One of the downsides of this flying bomb thing was the fact that it needed to be slung under a Betty bomber before it got into range. If the Betty gets shot down, or jettisons you well out of range (which has happened), then you're screwed.
