I haven't seen any concerns about kabooms in Pietta revolvers, but you could try checking out some of the western style shooting forums to see if they've had trouble.

The price is mainly due to rougher finishing.

Funny you ask OP, I just got my 1858 pietta army two weeks ago.

So far I only got the time to shot it once, put like 30 rounds into it with no malfunction.

It was round balls (.451) with prepacked powder, some pyrodex derivative i'm guessing seeing the lack of smoke.

I'm gonna order conical and hollow points bullets, loaded with regular black powder, and see what type of homemade paper cartridges are the best for it.

Tl:Dr, Pietta is good stuff, don't buy a brass frame, go full metal, and enjoy.

If I wanted to make my own improvised muzzle loader would standard black iron pipe be okay?

Would ground matches make a good improvised gunpowder?

Steel frame 1858 because you can get conversion cylinder for it.
