How would you explain to a sailor in 1945 what naval warfare is like in 2016?
>>
>>29728285

Heres the U.S military's latest piece of shit
>>
War is fought with politics not men
>>
The semen would know better than you anon. We haven't had any naval warfare since ww2. You should ask the semen for advice instead.
>>
>>29728285
its 2016!
>>
>>29728285

>>
>>29728309

>We haven't had any naval warfare since WW2

There's been a lot of naval warfare since WW2
>>
>>29728285

I would tell him that for the most part, deterrence through nuclear weapons and other systems has prevented any major naval battles from occurring.

After that, I would go into detail if he asks to know more about specific systems.
>>
>>29728285
Staring at fancy blips of light on a screen. Then either the blips disappear or you die a horrendous fiery death in less than 10 seconds.
>>
>>29728285

Hey sailor, you know those unguided artillery rockets that we have that we fired all over Normandy and missed everything? We put a machine inside that can aim it WAAAAY better. It can even hit a moving ship or plane in mid-air. Crazy.

You know those planes you have? We made them super better and they are much faster and can fly much higher. They are also armed with those smart missiles we just talked about.

Because of these two developments large battleships like the Iowa have become obsolete. Their large guns, while SUPER AWESOME are outranged and outmatched by these new smart missiles.

We have also put smart machines into REALLY fast firing machine guns, these can see missiles coming with a really smart kind of radar and use these smart guns to shoot down incoming missiles.

The basic idea of US naval warfare is to get our missiles and our planes into range of the enemy while shooting down all their missiles. Pretty simple, you aren't an idiot just because you are from 1945 where we already had planes, missiles, and rudimentary fire control computers.
>>
>>29728285

First I'd tell him that the largest guns on the seas currently only have a caliber of 5 inches and then he'd laugh at me and not believe a single word I'd say afterwards.
>>
>>29728285
>How would you explain to a sailor in 1945 what naval warfare is like in 2016?

In a missile fight? Hours of nothing followed by moments of abject terror.
>>
>>29728413

I feel like they'd understand pretty well the idea of targets being allocated by sensors and communication when they can't even see what they are shooting at, just aiming where they are told, that was just how artillery worked.

The weirdest part would be that nobody but the US is a naval power and nobody dares fight a war because of the atomic sword of Damocles, so there are whole generations of weapons that have come and gone without ever finding out if they were any good or not.

>People are people so why should it be?
>>
I mean, it's not like it would be super hard to explain. There are still people who fought that war and went on to see all of the technology we use developed. This is specially true for scientists. Many of the things we use today were theorized way back when and they already had a vision of that future, just as we don now with railguns, hypersonic missiles, pilotless fighter jets, and all that jazz.
>>
>>29729597
>pointless fighter jets
I thought that was a real thing until I realized you were talking about the F-35.

Yo man, when every civilian employer out there who isn't a former veteran themselves, they just see "Oh, you're former military? Where's your silver star then? You fucked up?"

They gotta give out ribbons like candy so that when that soldier/sailor/airman whatever gets out in 4 to 7 years, they can actually find a job easily.

These days, not getting a PCS award after each tour is nearly as bad for your civilian jobs chances as a Other than Honorable Discharge

Funny thing about radar-absorbent materials, they're NOT one-way mirrors. If waves are dulled one way, they're going to be dulled the other way as well.

>>
>>29730126

Of course the dulling isn't going to be the same, because the ship's source of waves is much closer to the absorbent materials than any enemy radar source would be.

It's still probably to such a degree that is unacceptable to the Navy.

I wouldn't be surprised that if the Zumwalt's production models didn't have telescoping radar and communication antenna and what not, so it can hide those parts that stick out if need be.

>BOOM

>NEXT AT 8: Strange debris found floating in the Pacific Ocean today, along with what appears to be charred human remains.
>>
>>29728285
Hey Dude, sit down and listen:

> Ship's armor is virtually non-existent anymore
>Drop your dungarees and your bucket hat, you gonna wear camouflage - in blue
>One carrier battle group could blow the entire jap force attacking Pearl out of the water - from 300 miles away.
>Oh, and while we're at it: Its now legal to buttslam your buddy so you dont have to do it behind the emergency diesel anymore.
>Alright, action stations, sailor - w...wait, is that a tattoo of a nude woman on your forearm? You gotta remove that, its offensive to women.
>>
>>29730368
>Its now legal to buttslam your buddy so you dont have to do it behind the emergency diesel anymore.

Well, not exactly.

Romantic relationships on the ship are still very much discouraged, though I will admit they are not uncommon.
>>
>>29728285
>Hey so like you know those aircraft carriers? Yeah, those are still a thing. And you know those batshit crazy nips that crashed their airplanes into ships? Well that's still a thing too, only now they use robotic ones that can be launched out of a tube from almost any ship. Flying torpedoes, basically. That's pretty much the bulk of ship-to-ship warfare right there. Oh, right, and radar is WAY better now.

OP, I hate to tell you this, but by the end of WWII, the USN had fielded:

Radio-guided bombs
Active Radar Homing bombs
Passive Sonar homing torpedoes
Rockets of various sizes, including 5" HVAR and the 12" Tiny Tim
Advanced electro-mechanical fire control computers and torpedo computers capable of hitting ships over the horizon and aircraft in flight
Proximity fuses
Cruise missiles (the JB-2 Loon, a radio-guided V-1 clone)
and quite a bit more beyond that.

I'd tell him that naval power Is all about airplanes and missiles now. That fighting at sea is more like fighting *from* the sea (to the land) and that attacks on Navy ships seem mostly to happen in port.

Only one side fights at a time.

And that it's still boring but mostly more comfortable with proper AC and heating.

Then I'd say "holy fuck, you're and old squid. "
