The only issues I've ever heard of with magnifiers is that they sometimes make the reticle blurry.

>lol look here's a photo of a bunch of operators using it therefore it must be good!!
Is that really the logic you're going to use? Keep in mind operators also often use HK416s even though the Norwegian military has proven they're shit, HK MP7s even though FN Herstal has proven they're shit, and EOTechs, even though the government proved they're shit.

>>29647689
Alright so good, that is your argument and I can keep calling you fucking retarded. If your argument is that the government, specifically a section of the government that has a ridiculously overbloated budget and is used as a test best for adoption candidates, has never put gimmicky shit into use, then I'm sorry to tell you that your last brain cell died long before you were born.

>>29647721
>Sometimes they make the reticle blurry
Therein lies the problem. For the price of a "high quality" magnifier and red dot combination you can get a much better variable magnification scope. Must I remind you that the price of an Aimpoint T-2 and Aimpoint magnifier is almost $1500? How about an EOTech and their proper magnifier? Lord knows they're just as if not more expensive on the magnifier side.

They're a range toy and very little else. A better option would be a fixed magnification optic with an offset pair of irons or red dot, which is why the military issues those, or a variable magnification scope.

I expect rational and thought out contribution from everyone on here. Some are just less capable than others.

I'm sure that magnifier setups have many weaknesses and unique problematic aspects as compared to fixed magnification sight, variable magnification scopes, and simple red dot setups.

I've had several discussions with pb, and skeletor, I believe, about the various merits of different setups. I think we eventually concluded that an ACOG with an RMR or a scope with an offset red dot can be quite functional.

I just want to break down the generalizing statements regarding magnifiers that pb and nick seem to be so ready to make.

Cheaper to build, both are easy.

it can go both ways now that the AR market is so saturated. you can get p.good deals on completed rifles now, like aero precision's fully-assembled mid-length carbines, which also come in OEM models that don't come with shit like handguards, trigger guards and stocks since most people will switch those out.

If you want to be a literary prick then you should note that never once did I use the word gimmick. I use gimmicky, which means something like a gimmick, but not gimmick. It's like a gimmick in that magnifiers are sold as a quick option to go from x1 to an x3/x6/x whatever fast, quick, and in a hurry. They are often sold as the end all be all of the magnified to unmagnified world. They are gimmicky because they are far from the best solution that many companies and people tout them as and they are nothing other than a waste of money.

If you'd rather I use a word other than gimmicky, I'll just go ahead and call them straight up shit. They're worse in every way than an ACOG with a piggybacked microdot. Your claim that they're not "gimmicky" or shit simply because they're used by operators is an appeal to authority and a very poor one at that.

Even in this photo you've posted a gimmicky optics setup on a gimmick of a rifle used by someone you'd consider worthy of citation even though he's mounted his red dot to his rail, which is a beginner's mistake at best.

Nobody said that variable power scopes shoot the same as a red dot and they certainly have a weird effect from a slight magnification and some tunnel vision, but you're still better off with an optic that's capable at long range with the ability to point shoot at extremely short ranges and shoot fine at short ranges than with a red dot + magnifier where you've essentially paid the same price as the red dot for a dangly bit that sits over your forward assist and, in the event of use, is terrible in comparison to a dedicated, magnified optic.

A basic bitch PSA will be around $600 (prices excluding ammo and mags of course) where as a similar quality m&p15 will be around $7-800.

The glory of AR's is that you can customize literally everything on it, so if you don't want to hassle with ordering a seperate upper and lower, you just go prebuilt.

I bought an m&p 15. My only regret is buying a shit optic and not changing the furniture

the Aero Precision factory carbines and midlengths go for about $650-$750 depending on where you shop. brownells has the OEM version on sale for $550, before shipping and FFL fees.

Kudos. Good post, good contribution, and a fine argument.

I really can't speak to the comparison between an ACOG and a piggybacked microdot vs. a magnifier setup. As I've said before I've owned neither.

I can however imagine that one might have a preference for a tube red dot over an RMR, or that one might possibly want 6x magnification but not want to spend $2500 on a 6x ACOG.

At the end of the day your opinion is just that. The "beginner" in the picture I posted is ostensibly some Italian special forces. Even if he has no great love for the setup someone, somewhere, did, and it is quite plausible that their opinion is more well informed than yours.

I wouldn't say that my argument falls squarely under the definition of an appeal to authority.

Militaries and special forces worldwide generally use effective and appropriate weapons and weapons accessories. While some fraction of the weapons and weapons accessories used by militaries and special forces are possibly gimmicks, It is the case that the majority of weapons and weapons accessories in use are not gimmicks.

Magnifiers are used by militaries and special forces. It is possible that magnifiers are gimmicks, but on their face, all other things being equal, are not likely to be gimmicks.

If you make the claim that magnifiers are gimmicks, or have qualities that make them "gimmicky" (what a terrible word), then please support that claim.

The thing is that you're asking someone to pick having a better red dot over having a better long range optic. Sure, tube red dots are a shitload better than pipsqueak microdots, but at the end of the day your option comes down to "do you want a better sight for long range engagements or short range engagements?" and over time we've seen the answer become clearer and clearer as the military adopts microdots on ACOGs rather than red dots with magnifiers.

If you're going to war, chances are you're going to want to have the ability to reach out and touch someone and you're going to want a good optic to do it. Fighting at short range is not preferable, but at the very least in short range engagements you can point shoot or pick up a 9MOA dot quick enough, but at longer ranges you're fucked if your optics don't meet the task.

Moving onto the x6 magnification, we once again see something that was molded by combat in the idea that x6 is too damn much magnification unless it's for a specialized role. For a long, LONG time now optics have been fiddled around with by many, many nations and it's no coincidence that almost every military has chosen an optic from x2.8-x4 for their standard infantry magnified optic for the last, oh, eighty years? x3 and x4 optics can be used with relative ease compared to something ike an x6 optic. I know my x3 ACOG is pretty easy to use even down to 10m, and while I'm sure the x4 is probably a bit harder, I can't imagine it's impossible. Could the x6 magnifier be useful? Possible, but it would be extremely situational. The verdict is still out on it, but I bet it'll be trashed like x3s.

No he is saying you blew me the fuck out. I wouldn't say you blew me the fuck out, but you did make several good arguments, and better yet you offered a well thought out and rational post.

I completely agree. If you're seeing primarily longer range engagements with a smattering of shorter range, then of course you would opt for the setup that favored longer range engagements. This setup would be whichever with the superior magnified optic.

Magnifiers are arguably the bottom of the barrel when it comes to magnified optics. From what I've read, they generally have poor eye relief, FOV, brightness, clarity, and light capture. All in all they are inferior.

At the end of the day, your opinion is just that. The beginner setup is a soldier from a country that has a notably spotty military history and hasn't been known for adopting the greatest combat equipment. Hell, in fact, they've adopted a lot of trash. I don't like the setup, and someone, somewhere might've liked it, but more likely in my mind is that someone, somewhere made a deal with H&K for the rifle and someone, somewhere was pitched the red dot + magnifier combo and thought it was hot shit and, without much testing against other optics setups, rushed to give a ton of money to Aimpoint. I know a guy in the Lithuanian SF and apparently they did a pretty similar thing with their G36s and EOTech/magnifier combos.

>>29648076
You wouldn't say your argument falls under appeal to authority, but at the end of the day your opinion is just that: yours. You're trying to say that because operators use something they clearly know more than either of us do and therefore my argument is less valid. It's the same as how you tried grasping at straws by moving away from the actual topic and onto a test of my literacy with the word games.

Militaries and SFs world wide shouldn't be compared directly side by side. Militaries tend to get the equipment that makes sense whereas SFs usually get the budget to test equipment that has the potential to be adopted OR meets a specific requirement for a mission. Saying that RDs and Mags are useful because SFs use them is like saying black suits and gas masks are real operator shit because SAS used them once.

A whole lot more than a fraction of SF weapons are gimmicks: a whole bunch are. The HK MP7 is the worse of a category consisting of two weapons that have little right to exist, the HK 416 can't stay on one gas setting and freezes shut in the cold, EOTechs, well, we all know about EOTechs, Elcans are heavy, not all that great, and are designed around a fucking terrible mount, and so on and so forth.

Well, guess it's 2/3.

With all due respect what you posted there is as much a strawman as my previous argument is appeal to authority. Most of the pictures I've posted, including my favorite in this post: >>29647579
are of U.S. special forces.

I'm an fully prepared to accept that some fraction of weapons setups selected for U.S. special forces are motivated not by battlefield merit but by contracts and money.

>You're trying to say that because operators use something they clearly know more than either of us do

It is not the use of the magnifiers signifies operator's superior firearms knowledge. It is commonly accepted that the operators, or their superior who select the contracts, know more than we do regarding firearms.

Word games are where the fun is.

>Saying that RDs and Mags are useful because SFs use them is like saying black suits and gas masks are real operator shit because SAS used them once.

False equivalency, red dots and magnifiers have been used more than once.

If the fraction is large enough then my argument fails.
>>
>>29648076
What militaries - not SFs, straight up militaries - use RDs and magnifier combos? I'd love to know. Once again, I never made the claim they're gimmicks, I made the claim that they're gimmicky. Gimmicky, which is an adjective, means that something is LIKE a gimmick.

Ah, I thought it said "btfo by". My bad, it's that time of the night again.

>If you're seeing primary longer range engagements
The fact about modern combat is that engagements primarily ARE at longer ranges. The only sustained short range engagements that I can think of in the last twenty years (not including durka on durka firefights) would be at the Donetsk Airport, Shyrokyne, and Avdiivka. The similarities? All three are in Ukraine and are between two factions that don't have wide access to any kind of magnified optic. You bet your sweet ass those engagements wouldn't have happened the same way if even one side had access to scopes.

Militaries that have been in combat, for example the Marines, have adopted ACOGs with RMRs for some of their weapons because they recognize that modern combat happens mostly at longer ranges. Militaries that HAVEN'T been in combat and are under no threat, like the Lithuanians, adopt G36s and red dots with magnifiers because they DON'T know what modern combat is like and how necessary a proper optic is.

As I've said and will continue to say: at short range you can point shoot and make due with a 9MOA microdot, but at long range you can't make due with a blurry red dot with terrible glass.

Once again, US SFs also adopt gimmicky shit. May I remind you that they were the reason EOTech had a military contract? The reason H&K has a military contract? You can say some fraction, but when it comes to SF it's a pretty large fraction of crap weapons thrown in and used once or twice that are made popular by photoshoots like the ones you've got that spur more adoptions by more militaries with less in-the-field experience.

>It is not the use of the magnifiers signifies operator's superior firearms knowledge. It is commonly accepted that the operators, or their superior who select the contracts, know more than we do regarding firearms.
Lots of things are commonly accepted that are complete bullshit, such as the old adage "your weapon is made by the lowest bidder". It's a crock of shit that people in the chain of adoption know what they're talking about, because if they did the US Army wouldn't have just announced they're adopting the H&K G28 over the SR25EC. Saying something is common knowledge just means that a better argument is lacking. Assume nothing until you've tried it or read up on it. The military adoption process is pretty terrible, and at this point its more like throwing darts at a board.

>False equivalency, red dots and magnifiers have been used more than once.

Not the best of comparisons, but a comparison it is. How about we go with desert night vision camo then? Something that was worn by SFs for years and years and was touted as useful by many, even though it's noted to be worse than snow camouflage through a night vision device?

If your idea of "good" is being reliable and capable of putting 30 rounds into a ~4" circle from a bench at 100 yards with irons, as low as about $650.

If your idea of "good" is full gucci with an optic, more like $2500.

ARs prices have slumped a tiny bit, but there's still several cubic buttloads of them in surplus that will need to be liquidated before the next cost increase. You'll have more trouble finding good ammo than good AR parts for cheap.
>>
>>29650444
True, the number of people making a run on guns should be diminishing every time. The number of 30 rd mags in circulation should be astronomical at this point.

All I have right now is all the brass I've been saving.

I put together a cart on Midway for what I would want for reloading. Came to about $1000 for a single stage and all the doo-dads.

It'll probably take about a year to pay that off with the savings, after that everything is in the black.

The way I see it is if I'm reloading 55gr FMJ then I'm getting nowhere. Same if I'm loading 115gr 9mm.

But if there's an actual load that I want or need, and can make it a fair bit cheaper than commercial, then hey, why not?
