So did you miss the part where the fed was the tyrannical overlord keeping costs artificially high?

>Only thing keeping the semblance of an economy going is railroads

Very plausible dark age. We're absolutely fucked without commercial trucking and railroads.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

The way the two of you were throwing around the word "leech", I assumed she had made some kind of speech specifically saying this.

Just looked up your quote, and here's what precedes it for context.

> You regard as 'in the public interest' any project serving those who do not pay; it is not in the public interest to provide any services for those who do the paying. 'Public benefit' is anything given as alms; to engage in trade is to injure the public. 'Public welfare' is the welfare of those who do not earn it; those who do, are entitled to no welfare. 'The public,' to you, is whoever has failed to achieve any virtue or value; whoever achieves it, whoever provides the goods you require for survival, ceases to be regarded as part of the public or as part of the human race.

Sounds like the character is damning the idea that money should be taken from those who make it and be given to those who make nothing. I see no logical inference that someone should not take something that they were forced to pay for.

the hard magic series is over. it was just a trilogy. Another author (ringo?) is writing a series set throughout the past of the MHI universe, and the first of those is coming out this summer. The only arguments these people can make against rand are ad hominems and literal falsehoods. Like saying by using social security she was violating any part of her philosophy. If you understood what you were reading and dont make out of context half-quotes you would probably understand.

Yeah. So far this book is actually helping me through some serious depression. So many books feel like they have the author's worldview imprinted on every character, even when the characters are supposed to have different views. It feels like each person with their own worldview in this though and I think that has helped me understand there will be good people and bad people no matter when or where. Humanity is just humanity, good and bad.

Also, Brother Francis dying made me both incredibly sad and then incredibly happy in rapid succession. I wasn't ready for those feels.

if you read starship troopers you should also read the forever war... different author, weirdly identical plot.. different perspective (troopers is "why we fight" the forever war is "why we shouldn't") but politics of the subject matter aside, the forever war is fucking great.

Red Gambit first 3 books.jpg
2MB, 3264x2448px
I know I'm basically shilling with how much I post this but I don't give a damn. The Red Gambit series by Colin Gee is pretty fucking great.
>WW3 breaks out shortly after the end of WW2 in Europe
>Soviets acquire plans for Operation Unthinkable and fully believe that the Allies are going to eventually attack them
>Stalin and Beria give the OK for Zhukov to begin planning a massive operation against the Allies
>Meanwhile the GRU/NKVD/MI5/OSS are doing a lot of undercover operator/sabotage shit up to and during the war
The only thing with the books is that at least for the first two it appears Gee was without a competent editor (or maybe he didn't have one) because there are some text errors that are few but somewhat glaring. Also he appears to have some issues with writing American speech (author is a britbong). Last thing is that he buys into some of the more popular memes like bullets will knock you over and some stuff like .45 stronk and the like. For all those faults I still love the books because he writes some fantastic and very gory combat sequences, sometimes involving famous units.

If you ever wondered what would happen if the Allies went head to head with the Soviets (and if the Pacific War had went on with some very interesting changes) you need to read this shit.

Guy was in the RLI and Selous Scouts for the majority of the war and did some insane operating, but talks about it in a very jovial and nonchalant way. Guy gave an interview on Vice (before they went to shit) about pseudo-guerrillas and shit and said he was somewhat amused at how modern SF went about it, mainly about things like ROEs and the approach.

"Tigers in the mud" by Otto Carius. I think that it's a great biographical read about the experience of a tank commander in WWII, even more about tank operations of small scale. His writing is very simple and direct, what I think its a good point as he focuses on describing his experiences during the war and dont try to judge what happened. He spent some, various, pages in the prologue to say how he is pissed with the mistreatment that the german soldier received by the world after the war, some people dont like this, I'm ok with it.

Did you even read it? That is the book that will want to make an asshole enlist, and appreciate just how important (and lacking) the veteran voice in political discourse is.

Yes.
>That is the book that will make make an asshole want to enlist
(^I assume that's what you wanted to say)
Well, I served by a draft, and it didn't make me want to enlist for contract. It actually cooled off my patriotism and sense of duty for awhile. I can't remember Dubois' speeches and the scene of informal cadet graduation without sad sighs.
>just how important (and lacking) the veteran voice in political discourse is
I didn't pick it up anywhere there. Care to elaborate?

Read all of them. Waiting for the new one to come out. Great audio books as well. His codex alera series hasn't caught my attention like the Dresden books has. I would throw into the mix of true /k/ related books, Grant and Lee and the iron cross(book about Rommel.) I'd throw in a pic but all my books are packed and ready for my move on saturday

I'm reading this right now. Pretty gud so far, although I'm only about 40 pages in. Waiting to see where this thing goes.

I would have bought it on Amazon, but it was 60 burgerbucks used. PDFs are readily available online, if you're waiting on that last page. I might purchase it if I make it to the 100 page mark.

I gleefully accept the title. but, then again, you have to back up the absolute inherent in your description of those who are critical of your rudimentary grasp of so-called free-markets, their overall impacts on society as a whole, and the true profitability of such an overall system.

What of frictionless movement of labor? Should they be restricted due to borders, or do you want a company town style of economy? Moribund during seasonal or technological scarcity?

Hi there!

You seem to have made a bit of a mistake in your post. Luckily, the users of 4chan are always willing to help you clear this problem right up! You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. You should always try to post anonymously, unless your identity is absolutely vital to the post that you're making!

Now, there's no need to thank me - I'm just doing my bit to help you get used to the anonymous image-board culture!

National security makes frictionless movement of labor unfeasible in many people's minds.

And what if your neighbor country becomes hostile, or has a civil war? What if your country doesn't want to let in refugees? These might not be truly valid concerns or they might be. They are questions that will be asked though.

But muh ad hominems and communism! Rand was evil because she used the programs we insist are wonderful and everyone should use! You shouldn't be allowed to own property or make money, the government will provide for you, you just have to work for them! You shouldn't be allowed to buy or make guns, the government will take care of you, you just have to surrender autonomy and the right to self-defense! You don't NEED that free market or your guns.

Not really. I just didn't like A Farewell to Arms when I read it - For Whom the Bell Tolls was a lot better. And All Quiet on the Western Front was okay, but quite boring and empty since I wasn't a kid in an existential crisis when I read it. And I found Fahrenheit 451 to be just plain bad. And I found Gaunt's Ghosts just mediocre trench prose. And One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was quite good, but it's not /k/. And Starship Troopers are also just bad. And The Art of War is barely readable due to language and translation issues (that one is not even my opinion - it's a fact).

>Mary Chestnut's Civil War Diaries would be wasted on you
