What does /k/ use for ear protection?

I'm fairly new to shooting and want to pick myself up some ear protection.

After looking around i've been digging noise cancelling headsets, I'm deciding whether I should buy Comtac IIs or Sordins, what would you choose?

Sport Ears + Sordin Supreme Pro X.
More expensive than half of /k/'s arsenals but it's maximum comfy.

Please nigga, it's complete garbage. Saying that as a russian.
>>
>>29557701
how does that work?

do you just stuff the red part into the headset?
>>
>>29557803
Fucking expensive plugs and headset.
>>
>>29557796
nigga lax, it was like 50$ + shipping
>>
>>29557803
Nope, you just double them up like anything else. Only the plugs are custom molded to your ear canal and are electronic as well.
>>
>>29557838
sounds like you're jealous anon

sorry im willing to pay the money to buy good headsets
>>
>>29557851
Not worth even 20$ desu.
>>
>>29557911
Have you even used them?
>>
>>29557657

Prosounds X-pro earplugs (adjustable protection without batteries)

and Howard Leights that everyone and their mother uses.

Going to have Prosounds M-4's soon. Can't wait.
>>
Literally any cheap ear plugs and ear muffs are fine. Don't need tacticool accessories on the range.
>>
>>29557701
why run plugs inside?
my Supreme Pro-X's have done me fine solo.
>>
>>29557922
Yep, they don't get the job done.
>>
>>29557942

i'm a howard leights + surefire plugs guy, and i wear the plugs in case the seal breaks.

I use Howard Leight Impact muffs. Theyre nice an affordable electronic earpro that lets you hear other people talk and still prevents the big booms from raping your ear.

pic related
>>
>>29557966
suppose, I've had my sordins for about 4 years and only had the seal break once or twice on me.
the gel cups help a lot to keep a constant seal on your head
>>
>>29557942
They only have a NRR of 18. That may be enough for light stuff but that's nowhere near enough for everything. A sawnoff shotgun will put out about 170dB and without doubling up that will wreck you.

Your hearing is important and I lose no audio acuity doubling up with that setup.
>>
>>29557966
Same here. Love the combo.
>>
>>29557775
I know a guy who bought these, he's a fag. Actually you might be him.

I have sordins and peltor comtac II
I prefer the Comtac, feels better, headband is thinner, sounds better IMO.

Sordins are cheaper though.
If you need them to work on a civilian radio use the comtac, you can just swap the mic.
>>
>>29557983
I use these along with a pair of surefire plugs. The reason I use both is on a couple of my rifles, it is hard to get good cheek weld without the seal breaking on the right side.
>>
Sordins + Howard Leight plugs.

Good noise reduction and I can still hear because the Sordin's have good microphones and speakers.

question:
If the bang is 170 decibles, and my earpro is rated to reduce it by 35, I am still left with 135. Isnt anything over 85 technically "too much"?
>>
>>29558074
GET A LONGER FACE THEN. honestly dont know what to tell you, works fine for me.
>>
>>29558013
>That may be enough for light stuff but that's nowhere near enough for everything.
have yet to find something thats made my ears ring/hurt after being exposed to it with the sordins and I've experienced the following calibres to name a few.
9x19, 9x18 .40, 45 acp, 38 special, 357 mag, 44 magnum, 12 gauge out of both 12 and 18" barrels, 20 gauge, 5.56x45 from everything from 7.5 inches to 18" barrels, 5.45x39, 7.62x39 out of short 11 inch barrels also, 7.62x51, 7.62x54R, 30-06, .303, 300 win mag, .338 Lapua, .416 Cheytac.
>>
>>29558134
That's only for constant, droning noise.
For short impulses like gunshots 140 is the instantaneous limit for damage. Something like 135dB, you only get a few seconds of total impulse noise before it becomes damaging. 130dB, about half a minute. 120dB, a few minutes. So on and so forth.

Keep in mind the pressure wave from a gunshot lasts a split second.
>>
>>29558143
>GET A LONGER FACE THEN. honestly dont know what to tell you, works fine for me.

Thanks for the response, not sure that I was really asking what to do, I was just replying to the OP who is looking for information. Just relax man. Everything is going to work out.
>>
>>29557657
If you want to use plugs under them use the comtac II. It has "plug mode"
>>
>>29558148
Hate to say it but your personal anecdotes don't matter. NRR of 18 is a NRR of 18 and that isn't rated for the big boys whether you notice or not.

Take a chance with your own hearing but it's inadvisable.
>>
used to use leights, but they are so fucking uncomfortable i stopped.

now i use surefire EP7 foam plugs, and/or a cheap set of peltor cans.
>>

Don't the elongated battery slots fuck up the way you usually lay your face on the stock?

Also post a timestamp of both otherwise you're bullshit

except it varies by frequency. and most shooting occurs within the 1-2k frequency which the supremes will block ~25 dB

It's not always 18, things are more complicated than just pinning an NRR number to something. Fit and seal need to be considered as well.

But yes, he's full of shit, MSAs need plugs underneath. But it's not like others don't.
>>
>>29558258
>25dB
...which is still not enough.

and yet companies like 3M continue to make headsets like the Comtac III's with a NRR of 23 that are issued to soldiers. clearly its sufficient.

>>
>>29558393
Listen, champ, you want to take risk with your hearing that's on you.
I'm going to keep doubling up.
>>
>>29558393
I shoot m2 .50 BMG and .338 lapua often with just the earmuffs and its sufficient.
Don't wear plugs under them even when shooting AT weapons.

Guess its a risk though.
>>
>>29557983
Just tried out those earpros and they work great. Fired 24 rounds of .357 in a closed range, right next to some dudes dumping a bunch of 9mm. Didn't have any sort of problem with the firing nor did I have any problems hearing my instructor behind me.
>>
>>29557898
Unfortunately you bought the wrong ones. Should have bought peltors with gel cups
>>
>>29558393
WTF is up with that thing on the front of his rifle? Looks like it's completely blocking his optic.
>>
>>29557657
I was lucky enough to score some custom molded in-ear electronic plugs. Highly recommend them if you have the means
>>
>>29557657
Since I have occasional EEEEE from childhood accidents (not firearms related), I make sure to always play it safe and double up on ear pro. I wear both foam plugs and muffs.

GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS. GEL PADS.

So fucking comfy.

Also hilarious how loud the sound amplification can be if you want it to. Must drive sentries mad. If you put it on full you can literally hear people breathing 25 meters away.

>>29557942
>why run plugs inside?
>my Supreme Pro-X's have done me fine solo.

I also have these, but I shoot indoor a lot.
When shooting indoor, I really need the additional plugs too. I have sensitive ears & don't want to risk tinnitus.
When there's a guy with a retardedly short AR15 next to you with an aggressive brake, you really get quite a bit of backblast. The reduction is simply too small.

I imagine an ongoing door to door firefight would not be very different, except then you likely would be more worried about your life and not so much about your ears

>>29558644
>I was lucky enough to score some custom molded in-ear electronic plugs.

I was going to do that too, but considering I have a fairly greasy ear canal, that's not a good thing. It causes wax build ups and will eventually cause the plugs to stop fitting correctly and then you risk getting exposed to way higher noise than intended.
>>
>>29558973
Sometimes I like to play with my gelpads. Just because they feel so nice.

I would probably paizuri then with my dick but I don't want to get cum all in my ear defense.
>>
>>29558973
>wax build ups

yeah that's the one drawback. you have to clean them up a bit every time you use them if you have waxy ears
>>
>>29557983
I get worried about the seal breaking with these things so I might buy some plugs to wear underneath. Seems like a lot of people also have this problem with them.
>>
>>29558973

>Where can I buy Gel-pads for Sordins?

Anywhere where you can buy Sordins, you should be able to also buy gel pads for them?
They're usually also offered in package deals, making them cheaper. The gel pads can be like $40 / €30 if you don't shop around.
But god are they worth it.
>>
>>29557966
Do the same as well.
>>29558393
No one cares if soldiers come home without hearing because it's only like 5% disability, it doesn't cost anyone money besides the soldier.
With electronics there's really no reason not to double up.
>>
>>29558355

nice I want a set of Comtacs
>>
>>29558640
Probably some fancy IR laser or somthing
>>
>>29558355
Alright you're not a faggot.

Anyways, from reviews I've heard people complain about how they get in the way of aiming with the stock.
>>
>>29557983
got them too. does the cabling destroy your sealing too? the cables should be outside of the holder, not inside. that way they wouldn't fold anymore but would fit better.

sry for shitty english.
