How did you become such great armchair generals, /k/ommandos? Was it from lurking for years? Reading Sun Tzu and Clausewitz? Playing RTS games? Just typing something and saying "yeah, that sounds smart"? All of the above?

All of the above, plus wargames.

Sometimes shit is just so fucked up no experience is necessary. For example, look at the Russian response to Beslan.

I don't need to be Spetsnaz or Delta or some other SOF to unequivocally say that was a major fuck up.
>>
I just started playing Wargame: Red Dragon like a year ago... so it wasn't RTSs for me. Also, lurking on /k/ to learn stuff about the militaries of the world is like going to Pornhub to learn about the human body.
>>
I read a shit-ton of literature even before I had an easy access to the internet.

>like going to Pornhub to learn about the human body.

You mean in that it's entirely possible, but most people are concerned with jacking off instead?

I started taking showers

I spent two tours in combat experiencing life and death. I've been witness to friendly and enemy demise. I killed a couple of guys I didn't know. Kept one of their hats.

I continued to serve and delved into more elite units because no more combat meant no more challenges. So now I am a hard charging airborne ranger infantryman with an astute and very keen outlook on tactics.

I am an arm chair general for sure.

Thank you for your service

I know you're being sarcastic but what should I do? Should I make up stories of me not doing anything and being a fuck fat pogue?

I don't fit in with everybody but I know there are a number of joes out there like me hanging out on /k/.
>>
>>29532225
Reading history books and being able to see parallels to prior events helps alot too. Most situations make you facepalm because you realize someone just did the exact same thing like thirty years before.

I don't believe you.

You don't believe I'm an arm chair general?

What limited access I had to cable television was during the Hitler years of the History Channel. Later when I had access to internet that didn't require unplugging the land line I had unlimited access to crappy flash games, wikipedia, and documentaries uploaded in five seperate 240p segments to youtube.

Is there a term for the opposite of Armchair General? Perhaps "Armchair Ignoramus"? I was reading one of Churchill's accounts of the Boer War, where the British forces were facing an entrenched Boer force during the relief of Ladysmith.

I looked at some maps and pictures, and based on his description couldn't figure out how to breach it. I had no idea how it could be won without major sacrifice or weakening the force to the point the Boers could easily turn it aside and go on offense.

And yet they did it remarkably quickly (After a few false starts)- at least compared to the grinding of other actions.

The other bit that impressed me was getting all the necessary supplies up to the front, so that each man was able to leave camp for the battle with five days of rations.

It could be worse, I could actually be in the military as a qualified general.
>>
>>29532225
>Clausewitz
Far too tactical level for /k/.
It's all Sun Tzu and his fucking strategic platitudes for three year old tbqh.
>>
>>29532225
I just like the way camo looks.
