/k/, I need a bit of advise. I have pic related waiting for me back home when I take PCS leave in a week. I already have a scope picked out (NightForce SHV 4-14x56 MOAR), and I want a mount where I can still use the iron sights with it installed. Does anyone on /k/ have any idea what mount could fit the bill? Cost is not a factor.

IMO you are best off getting a QD mount that you can take off if there is some issue with the scope. You could see through the original claw mounts, but since you have the pic rail on there I dont think its worth looking for such a niche product that probably doesnt exist.

In all fairness, I have a very niche rifle. I'm torn between getting a QD or putting it on a riser. I just don't know if the riser would introduce a degree of inaccuracy due to it flexing or whatever.
>>
>>29529537
Just get a QD mount. That way your height over bore wont be as insane and realistically when would you want to use irons anyways? Slick rifle by the way, I've always liked the MSG90 even over the PSG1. So much more utilitarian.
>>
get a B&T mount. they actually make a riser model that allows the use of your factory irons. BONUS, it's arguably the best out there. fucking rock solid. but I would recommend that once you install it, just leave it on. Claw mounts are pretty junky. even worse if it's a repro.
>>
>>29529731
I dont think any of the B+T mounts would fit since those are designed for the original G3 reciever that doesnt have the pic rail welded on
>>
>>29529778
woops, didn't realize you had the one with the weld on rail. NVM.

Just ordered a new ptr, where is a good place to buy hk like surplus furniture and cheap mags? Are all the mags the same or are there different manufacturers? I'm paying 845 for 18inch GI railed version with a steel lower, how'd I do?

Since you mentioned B&T, I found this.

The customer review said it should work how I want it to with the welded PTR rail. Fingers crossed.

Your already going to have chin weld issues with a 56mm objective lens.

Normally id day try running an offset irons, but unless the G3 clones have a 12 oclock rail your SOL there. How about a tube mounted red dot backup?

They're all the same. HK, Rheinmetall, Carl Gustaf whoever. G3 mags are interchangeable. CETME mags might fight; might not.

PTR-91

I think Smith & Wesson made a .308 AR called the M&P-10, although it retails at around 1500
>>
>>29530327
Armalite and DPMS both have AR-10s under $1k

I'm not looking to buy right now but let's say $900-1000
>>
>>29530443
Id go cheap AR-10. I like the KAC receiver cuts that Armalite uses. DPMS uses scaled up AR15. Both take pmags these days though.

The SA58 is $80 over budget, not that much, but still I can get a rigid budget
>>
>>29530484

I've always been interested in AR10s. Once I get into a position to actually buy one I'll have to look into it.

The first one. With these:

I should be able to do what I want. By my reckoning, the riser should be just high enough to allow me to use the irons, and the scope rings should the scope just high enough for the bottom of the objective lens housing to clear my sight picture.

But this isn't an ideal world, so we'll have to see in just over a week. Knowing the vapid attention whore that I am, the first thing I'll do is to brag about my abortion of a sniper rifle on here.

So what is the best scope mount for a ptr91? All the ones I find are a few hundred dollars, like what the hell? Why are they all so expensive? I have the ptr with the rail but I feel like I would have a hard time shooting with the scope that high
>>
>>29530536
The scope has a 30mm tube, not a 34mm. Sure you can use the inserts, but why not just get 30mm rings?

Ive used risers in the past on other peoples rifles. Always felt like a huge compromise.

Mind you on my battle rifle I have a scope in a QD mount, back up folding irons, and a backup offset red dot.
>>
>>29530558
And a new gas block is a few bucks, a punch, and a heavy hammer.

Those are the only rail-mounted scope mounts they had.

Also they're on sale.
I may have more money than brains, but I'm not going to pass up a deal like that.

As for the riser, I would probably have to use a riser anyway; I doubt the tube would clear the rear irons without one.

>>29530443
>>29529988
Save more money kid. You can't afford to shoot your new rifle with that budget. Ptr being the cheapest most immediately available will immediately give you a heart attack when you see what a collapsible stock, bipod, or claw mount cost. I hope you don't plan on modifying anything ever or expecting a modular platform homie.
Or is that just the budget for rifle and you have a separate stash for ammo? You fuckin better, and mayble glass?
>>
>>29530607
That's what you get for buying the first shit you could afford.
>>
>>29531007
With the Urbach MSG90 barrel that's on it, should be sub-half MOA.
>>
>>29531243
Ordering everything at once and hoping it works out? Sure. Known quality parts leads to good results generally.

Enough smiths and general knowledge out there to help iron bugs if any show up.
>>
>>29531332
I bought it off of a guy who had it rotting in his safe and was asking $4k for it. I know that the conversion parts alone on that thing is at least 5 grand, because I was planning on building one at some point. I don't even want to know what labor would have cost on it.

if I wanted an fal with a carry handle and full length barrel (21"), and no rails or tacticool furniture, would my only option be a parts kit? if so, how much would that cost?

Now a simmilar question, but for the ptr. Is the GI really the only one without welded on rails? And whats the pros&cons of heavy barrels on a ptr?
>>
>>29531682
Kit builds can be found for $800-$3000 depending on options. DSA also still makes a full length with carry handles, they are hard to find and only come out in batches.
>>
>>29531712
do the standards have the option to mount a carry handle? I dont know how to check.

http://www.dsarms.com/p-14238-fal-sa58-standard-rifle-21-barrel-fixed-humpback-buttstock.aspx

I just want rifles close to generic military standards so I can listen to CCR and have nam/falklands flashbacks.

Gay, but the cutie is holding an FAL regardless, so it's okay
>>
>>29533627

They're both incredibly easy, but the PTR does require a little extra effort to remove the bolt and it gets much dirtier

Neither will have parts break, FALs pretty much bottom out at 1.5 MOA but typically 2+ is common

PTR will get you in the 1 range
Despite what PTRfags here will have you believe, it isn't a .5 MOA gun

Expect between 1 and 2 with reasonable ammo
Pretty much spot on 1 maybe a little under with match, but don't count on it

I'm about to jump on a PTR91 GI my self, paddle mag and welded rail pretty much eliminate all the issues I've had with the rifle.
I'm looking to get it scoped, so I came across something like this - doesn't look gay like a see through riser and you need high rings anyway so your objective/scope bell clears the irons, gives you a very small hole to aim through so if your scope goes to shit you still want to take it off.

As cool as this is a MRDS mounted on top or side of the scope might be the better o shit emergency option
>>
>>29529835
I bought a bad Century imbel in post ban config for cheap, didn't want to cycle.
Swapped the barrel and it ran like a champ, have since para'd it
>>
>>29529988
You can roll your own AR10 for cheap, but imo a PTR91 will run circles around it.
AR10's only get good with quality, even if you build your own you are going to want a good barreled upper with bolt group

SO PTR-91, or a DSA voyager
>>
>>29530086

I've asked you guys before, but whatever. I'm sick of this digi camo that came with my FAL. I know that at some point I want to clean it all off, but before that, I wanted to try painting the stock and hand guard solid white. What do you guys think?
>>
>>29530607
The best scope mount for G-3's without a welded rail is the B&T rail, but you already have a welded rail - the only thing you'll need is a cheek riser - check HKparts
>>
Best PTR model? I heard the GI has a pencil barrel and that's not good.
>>
>>29534176
The GIs have the same barrel profile as original G3s.
>>
>>29534185
Okay it seems my sources were, as usual, faulty. I'll see about picking one up, for the price they're hard to beat. When I picked up a CETME at the store the thing felt like it was built for my height and I knew I had to pick up a G3 model.
>>
>>29533627
They are both easy to break down - FAL is a bit easier for a field strip, the only parts I know of that can break with grunt treatment is FAL carry handles and G3 plastic cocking pieces attached to the cocking handle - the cocking handle is still usable.

G3 = More accurate, the average G3 will do 1MOA with good ammo - fantastic for a military rifle

FAL = better ergos, much better in carbine form, extremely good and much better suppressor host
>>
>>29534176
It all depends on your preference really and what you want to do with the rifle.
The GI barrel is fine, same as a G3 and will be lighter.
I don't actually know anyone with the 16" carbines

The heavier profiles can't take the slim handguards
>>
>>29534151
If you are going white the digi might actually work with it
>>
and now for something completely different.

I've got a .308 vepr that I gave the "cooper scout" treatment to last year...light as you can make it, accurate enough, low power (non long eye relief) optic, etc. I slapped a cheap ass nikon p223 on top of the rail mount and had fun...but I want better glass now.

Whats a good low magnification optic that is lightweight AND can take the .308 semi slapping? The ones designed for ARs worry me...the nikon took it. but 308 recoil is quite a bit more than 223.
