Well /k/, I'm finally in a position to start shopping for my first gun. I'm considering getting either a Savage Arms AXIS in .22-250 or a 93R17 in .17 HMR, but I'm having trouble deciding which to get. Most of my hasguns friends have recommended Savage for a budget firearm and I would like to stay under $400. Any recommendations?
Get the 17hrm or better yet a 22lr.
Cheaper ammo means your more likely to shoot more and get better

Also, I'd prefer to avoid a 22 because hoarders.
If you like savage, 22-250, and live near a cabelas you can get a varmint barreled savage 12fv for $419 with a hundred dollar mail in rebate... It's like a pretty good step up from the axis...

I did some research on ammo prices and .22-250 seems a bit high at present; it looks like I'd be better off with a .17 HMR. I've never shot before, so something cheap to feed would be best.

22lr is a gell of a lot easier to find then 17

22lr is half the price of 17hmr.
And the hording isnt an issue.
you could piece together a nothing special ar15 for a little more than 400

Good news! The 12FV also comes in 223 which is about as cheap as shit to shoot as they come...

According to the site I'm browsing it's about the same as 17 HMR.

I'd prefer to start with a bolt-action (easier to justify) and I have no experience whatsoever with firearms. That doesn't mean I don't know anything about them; like many things, I've gathered a lot of information about them but have no real experience.

You should think about getting an inexpensive bolt gun chambered in 5.56/.223 would be inexpensive to shoot and not very difficult to justify and would be fairly versatile
Buy a nugget, 22lr is for pussies

No. Don't get a garbage rod. If you want a surplus bolt action, get a Mauser which is a much better rifle.

I'm with this guy

Try and build a budget AR. It might be a bit above your $400 budget, but you can also build it up as you go. Not to mention .223/5.56 is a very versatile round, plus it's cheap and plentiful.
