So I recently obtained a Walther p38 Luger from my Grandfather, no he didn't get it in ww2, he traded a tractor for it, but it is in very nice shape with the holster and even the bullets still in the mag. I was wondering what it might be worth, and if there's any way I could trace it back to a specific soldier, or unit. (I don't intend on selling it.) Also should I get it cleaned so I can fire it, or just put it on a shelf? (it hasn't been fired in over 40 years) AlsoAlso I can't get a picture of it atm, but it is a walther p38, with the numbers not the walther logo. Thanks in advance

Must have been a shitty tractor to trade for it. P38s aren't exactly that super expensive
>>
>>29496047
well this trade was 20 years ago, so they might have been worth more then ? I honestly don't know.
>>
>>29496047
Could of just really needed one.

Also, Isn't it just P38 Walther.

I'm under the impression lugers are something different, like have a nice bit that pops up on fire different.

oops, it replaced the Luger

isn't it weird how everybody always confuses their german pencil-barreled pistols?

Do you get sad when someone restores a classic vehicle that's been poorly maintained?

Sure, if the gun has a decent finish, keep it that way. If it's gone to shit? There's no shame in a refinish. It just prepares the gun for another round of service, and you decide how it is treated from there.

Start here. Complete with disassembly tutorial.

That gun looks like it's in mint condition straight from the factory. You must be a hipster.
>>
>>29495985
If it has the old eagle on it, its from ww2, else its just a westgerman P1.
>>
>>29496967
>there's no shame in destroying the value and history
But there is
>>
>>29496967
A classic with factory paint and well maintained is always worth more than one with new paint.
>>
>>29497562
A refinish doesn't necessarily destroy the value and history of a gun. If you want to shoot it, i'd recommend it. If it sits in the safe all day, then don't.
>>
>>29497532
it has the eagle
>>
OP stop being a fucking retard and A.) do research before asking advice from an anonymous Eritrean catscratch post byte sharing forum and B.) post pictures of the fucking gun.

Walther P.38's can range from several thousand in good condition with Nazi Party grips to $200 for shitty postwar models. Stop being a fag and think for once.
>>
>>29498042
A refinish does destroy the value.
I've seen non RC k98s sell for a lot less because of refinishing.
If you are trying to sell to a collector, they'll walk away the moment they see it. I know I would.
>>
>>29500148
well anon A.) I just prefer the advice from /k/ over what I can research, it has a special touch to it. B.) I already stated that i just can't post photos of it right now. I guess I also forgot to mention in the OP that I'm not a gun person, so I have no idea what research sites are credible, and don't know much about firearms in general, that's why I came here
>>
You can trace it back to a year but thats about it
>>

>I have no idea what research sites are credible
>go to site where the odds are the first answer you'll get is "its a FAMAS"
Man I dunno.
