That sucks about your unit, I had to fight like hell to go. It's pretty cool if you take it seriously and if you keep track of all your shooters scores and show improvement it makes you look good. Sadly from what I've seen most units send their turds to be coaches.

My advise is to go over some peoples heads straight to training, get a package from them because they're always short on names to send, get it all filled out and present it to your command. When they see that you've put in all the leg work and you're ready to go their hands are mostly tied.

I did all that, but it was battalion training that kept fucking it up. My shop was fine with it.

I'm actually kind of proud of it. I put a real rear iron sight on it with the windage and elevation nobs on it, and I had to dremmel and file out a front sight for it myself.
Recruits now days only learn with RCOs and I think that's wrong, as a combat marksmanship coach I make sure they can shoot iron sights. It's like learning to drive a manual, once you do that you can use any automatic. If you can shoot expert with iron sights you can use an optic.

Works a bit different in the Army, at E-4 you have Specialists and Corporals, and you can get promoted up to it through time alone. Most people will never be a Corporal though as it's a situation thing and will normally go to their E-5 board. If they have the drive that is. Like you said, a lot of Specialists are skating. A few of the ones I know are pretty sketch.
