What's up /k/? I'm going to enlist in the Army National Guard soon. Should I choose infantry or carpentry/masonry specialist as my MOS? I think the combat skills that an infantryman learns would be extremely useful if they were ever needed, but I also want to buy some land and build my own house eventually, which carpentry and masonry specialist would help tremendously with. What do? What skills do you think are more valuable?
>>
carpentry and masonry will help get you a job post Guard, and like you said it will help with building a house. Infantry on the other hand will age your body 20 years in 4, and has nothing marketable in the job force.
>>
>>29459018
Thanks Benny
>>
>>29459018

You won't age 20 years in 4 in the Guard dude.

You can be Infantry in the Guard and do whatever else you want, Anon. It's 1 weekend a month. Get some cool training it, tell girls at the bar you're Infantry, and then get a real, unrelated job.

I never understood joining the Army if you weren't going to be a front line fighter. When I signed the dotted line, I was joining the Airborne Infantry and later the Ranger Infantry. First to fight. I wanted to be the toughest guy on the battlefield.

>Toughest guy on the battlefield
>Not joining the Marine Corps
>>
>>29459319
It's nearly a joke nowdays talking about the jarhead corps. You lack luster shitbags are nothing more than naval infantry,
>>
>>29459287
I have a degree already and a job with two more lined up so I have options as far as job prospects in the civilian sector. The training of learning how to fight as a soldier is extremely appealing to me and it would be incredibly valuable in a shtf scenario. How hard is it to learn how to build a house? Could I learn from DIY videos?

>>29459296
what kind of special forces are available in the guard? Anything that deals a lot with survival? I'm reasonably fit so I'm down for whatever
>>
>>29459344
20th Special Forces, 143rd Airborne Infantry, several others.
>>
>>29459344

Then I would 100% go infantry if you've already got job prospects.

As for Special Forces in the Guard, they actually exist. Look up the 19th and 20th Special Forces Groups.

Why do you want Guard if you want to do high speed stuff? Why not just join active?
>>
>>29459365
I have a gf but I don't want to get married right now as dumb as that might sound. Stopping nigs from destroying cities. Helping people that get btfo by natural disasters. I like the idea of physically being there for Americans at home
>>
>>29459333

Says the guy in the Army

Fair enough. What State do you live in?

The Army is the center of the military universe. Guess who I saw in airborne school and ranger school? Marines, navy pukes and air force pogues. I don't know a single joe who has gone outside of the Army for advanced training but I constantly see other services herding around Fort Benning for class.

You all suck.
>>
>>29459733

Alright bub that's why Marines going over to the army don't have to go to their boot camp but the army guys going over to the Marines have to go through Parris Island
>>
>>29459683
central pennsylvania
>>
>>29459827
You're wrong, I has a marine sgt. And two petty officer 2s in my army bct class.
>>
>>29459827
The trainings different you douche. Guys from all the branches have to retrain to join another.
>>
>>29459847

lol no

Literally military click bait. Ya dun goofed
>>
>>29459834

I hear their Guard is really legit. I don't think they're close to any of the Special Forces Guard units though.
>>
>>29459919
it says that 20th special forces has a detachment in new milford pennsylvania
>>
>>29459881
Probably no one in that click Bait link has swapped branches of service, I've actually met prior service ncos doing army bct, I can site where I met them down to the battery /company level
>>
>>29459827
What a farce. Just spouting that untruth confirms you know exactly nothing about the military.
>>
>>29459972

Oh well shit, there you go man!

One thing I have heard though, jsut to keep in mind, is if you do go NG SF, get ready to be way more involved than 1 weekend a month, 2 weeks in the summer.
>>
>>29460063
Hush
>>
>>29459296
How hard was RASP?
Should I hold off on enlisting option 40 until I'm already in good physical condition?
>>
>>29460078
I wouldn't try rasp until I can max my pt test, 77 push ups and 79 sit ups in 2 minutes and a 13 minute 2 mile and until I can run 5 miles in 35 minutes or less, but I'm no ranger so I don't know shit buy it should be common sense that being really fit would lower the stress on you.
>>
>>29460128
Well you don't go straight to RASP. You have BCT, AIT and Airborne to go to beforehand. I just don't know if that's enough time to get into good enough condition. I'll never quit mentally, I just want to make sure my body can handle what's thrown at it.

Also, is there any time as an 11x in the 75th to study?

>>29460078
Didn't do RASP - I did RIP. The ability to do endless pushups and running like a deer is almost mandatory. At 19, I felt whipped like an old man after PT.
>>
I'm also considering ROTC with the National Guard. Anybody know how intensive ROTC is and if I could still do well in classes?
>>
>>29460063
realistically how much time would you estimate will be spent? Will I still be able to work? I know it'll be a little more intensive seeing as how it's special forces and all. These are all questions for a recruiter but I still value your input
>>
>>29460190
After enduring the 75th Ranger gauntlet, everything else is a joke. You're better off asking someone close to your skill level. Is there a middle school nearby?
>>
>>29460190
It's not too bad. Just make sure you get to sleep early because you will be waking up early
>>
>>29460232

I'm not NG SF so I can't give you a good answer. Sorry mate. I just know what I've heard.

As for work, usually State and Federal jobs understand. Civilian work can be tougher. They can't LEGALLY fire you and usually scaring them with legal action keeps them in line but it puts more pressure on you because if they want to seperate you, they might take a bullshit reason and use that since they can't legally come out and say 'It's because he's in the Guard.

Some civilian jobs will be really understanding as well though, don't get me wrong. But some will be douchebags.
>>
>>29460158
Bct alone certainly won't get you into rasp shape, ait might but it's heavily dependant in the length of your ait, mos, and dedication to working out when you have time besides regular pt. I can't speak from firsthand experience with airborne but I can't imagine 3 weeks would have a huge impact on fitness if you're not making strides past ideal scores before hand, I've even heard that airborne school is fairly easy.
>>
>>29460188
So depending on DEP time, OSUT isn't enough time to physically prepare for RASP?
>>
>>29460251
Thanks cindy
>>
>>29460293
Alright. I guess I'll hold off enlisting for a couple months in case DEP is short. Thanks m8y
>>
>>29460268
I'm in a county government position right now and my supervisor has family in the military so I'm hoping they'll be lenient about it. What branch are/were you serving with?
>>
>>29460301
You ought to be in tip top shape after leaving infantry osut. Airborne school is lax so you need to step it up for those four weeks. After airborne, you will load up on a bus for the 75th ranger regiment rasp barracks. You'll be physically ready but perhaps not mentally ready. Many joes dropped out because they were getting tired of the school life style - being constantly abused.

If you can stick it out, you'll become an actual Army Ranger.
>>
>>29460359
That sounds so fucking great.
At what point in a Rangers career will they go to Ranger school? What happens if they make NCO without going to Ranger school?
>>
>>29460375
You cannot earn a leadership position without ranger school. The only tab-less E5s I saw in battalion were former military transfers who passed RIP and were just waiting for their start date.
>>
>>29460375
You'll go to ranger school before a year is up if you are squared away.
>>
>>29460443
Thanks Pham
I know I'm already reaching for the stars with wanting to be a Ranger, but I've got another question.
Is it at all common for Rangers to get accepted to West Point USMA?
>>
>>29460468

Stop right here dude.

Fucking either go the enlisted route or think about going to the USMA. I promise you won't do both.

Fuck, even if you DID become a Ranger, by the time you are at the point where you could even be considering college the LAST THING you would ever want to do EVER is go to a military college, let me promise you that.

If anything at all you'd be sick of the military shit and want some freedom to go to a State School on your post-9/11 GI bill to fuck some hot sorority sluts while sleeping in and going to your 11:30 AM Marxism 101 class half hungover.

Just trust me on this one. You know why?

I used to think like you.

Great job Lucy.

>>
>>29460548
This guy is telling the truth

West Point is just like a TRADOC environment, if you've already lived through it you won't want to go back
>>
>>29460548
>>29460676
That kind of sucks to hear.. West Point seemed like a really great opportunity with awesome history behind it.

I'm definitely putting being a Ranger before anything else though.
>>
>>29460751

>West Point seemed like a really great opportunity with awesome history behind it.

It is, if you want to go to college there.

But after enlisting and going through the shit as a Ranger (BIG IF), just trust us, you will no longer care about that sort of thing.
>>
>>29459319
This, get sum faggots.

In the past few months I've noticed a proliferation of interest in the Rangers

Anybody know what's going on in the Regiment with regard to the drawdown?
Are they trying to cut their numbers, or will they stay fairly consistent due to their SOF status?

Will the training tempo stay the same, increase, or decrease as deployments dwindle? I read that the training tempo went nuts during Iraq and Afghanistan because they had limited time at home between deployments, which leads me to believe that it might slow down?

I've got a pretty stiff Ranger boner and I've been going hard on PT but it's still a big decision
>>
>>29461510
>>29461510
I'm going to piggyback off your questions and ask:

How much of the year are Rangers deployed now?
I'd like to get braces, and I've heard you can't have them on deployment.
