Supposedly a wharncliffe can be pretty effective by increasing leverage throughout the swing, since the curve of the blade doesn't shorten the moment arm something something something.

I bought it simply because I liked the look, the steel used, and Spyderco as a whole.

A dead-straight edge is also pretty useful.

Best garbage bag find ever.

One of my DIY leather strops, loaded with 8 micron CBN emulsion, along with my newest Calton 1095 necker.

Oiling the strop until it wouldn't take in any more really helped its performance by making it a lot more supple.

I keep meaning to wrap paracord around the grip part, but I'm afraid to do so before finishing the metal somehow. I would hate for it to rust away beneath the cord.

Way too expensive for the amount of knife you get.

A couple years ago they were the cool, trendy knife for someone who didn't want the same Wusthof or Henckels-Zwilling as every other wealthy housewife.

If you want a Japanese knife, there are better knives out there that don't set their prices on the needs of their huge parent corporation's overhead and marketing costs.

They sure are pretty, though.

It's a Rachel Ray knife guys. Learn to use a chef's knife or a gyuto (if you prefer Japanese shapes) properly and you will start to see the santoku's limitations.

also mine, my kitchen has very limited bench space so having your fingers lifted is very useful. To be honest I probably use my cheap chefs cleaver and another santoku more than any of my big chefs knives but that probably comes down to bench space.

Not everyone likes the same patterns you know. Just as an example, I adore my (admittedly overpriced) Zwilling Kramer chef's knife in 52100, but a lot of people HATE the tall heel. Conversely, i've nevwr liked low heeled (i.e. French pattern) chef's knives or most gyutos because i prefer a tall heel.

Sure. When I had a little studio apartment, the only knives I really had were a six-inch santoku and a six-inch serrated utility knife that doubled as a bread knife. I didn't have space for anything else.
