FYI, Drill Presses aren't meant for or build for milling.
You can get a drill press for drilling the depth holes, but use a "cheaper" mill, or get a good router. While a router isn't the best way to do it, it's a lot better than fucking up your drill press

Think I need to paint my gun like that.
How's the Ruger AR556/SR556 as a first gun?
People are advising me to start out with a basic bitch AR and tune it how I like later on if need be. I was originally looking at spending $1500 on a gun, but I don't know if I really will use a $1500 gun to it's fullest extent

You could get more for your money if you build one, but that's not really what you asked.
Jumping right to a nice rifle isn't like throwing a newbie on a 1000cc motorcycle. If you're a newer shooter, it's not like it's gonna kill you or anything. The worst thing that could happen is you'll get spoiled by a nice trigger and not develop the basics of a good trigger pull, if you don't already have that.

Wouldnt recommend sr556 they are spotty with carrier tilt the older one with square carrier tail's carrier tilt was on and off some gun have it some gun dont. Newer one with rounder tail are better but still some gun get bad tilt wear.
I did research on them soon after they are released i liked their aesthetics thats it fit n finish was good but hefty and design in carrier tail area wasnt good enough.
In longer run DI ar-15 are better than piston.
With $1500 budget i would point you at DD or a gucci build.
You might not get full use out of it at first but as your skill gain you will eventually get the full use. If you find yourself wanting another feature or different part as you look at complete gucci ar you should do a build.
>>29445204

>>29445452
i thought you can have pistols? why not just buy an ak pistol through a private sale
>>29445462
You have to be 21 in Maryland to own a pistol, regardless of sale type. You need a "HQL" license to own a pistol, and to receive that you need to be 21.
>>29445478
damn, are you close to 21?
>>29445486

In non ass-backwards states, yes, but to posses a pistol I would need a HQL, which I'd need to be 21 for.
Maybe I'll have my grandfather or father get an AK pistol and set up a trust.
>>29445512

Don't replace anything that works in lieu of "performance"

>spaniards in charge of designing a magwell
>>29446065
How...
The problem with the M4 is that the shorter barrel necessitates moving the gas port further back which, again, leads to higher pressure and all the problems associated with it. This is in part accounted for by a smaller gas port. But the higher pressure leads to faster erosion making the original problem occur faster. Additionally, the shortening of the stock tube leaves less room for the buffer which had to be shortened to keep the stroke length of the bolt the same as in the M16. As a consequence the lower weight of the shorter buffer moving faster leads to the same extraction problems as before. So it's lost much of the potential of the workaround that was necessary in Vietnam. It's not as bad as back then but it's far away from being up to what a properly designed system could be in terms of reliability.
>>29437564
>>29446160
Fuck forgot to add ontop:
Is this a reason to get only 18-20" barrels?
Or doesn't this reliability issue apply to 16"?
>>29446147
I wonder how they can fuck it up so badly too.
Don't get a CETME-L.
>spongy trigger (even worse than a stock CETME-C or G3 type rifle)
>stock is short and really low, can't shoulder it up high due to the sloped buttpad
>sights are just awful as the rear sight is a round diopter/ghost ring, front sight has squared off protectors instead of round
>mag release button is just half an inch too forward to be comfortably used without moving your firing hand
>magwell is incredibly tight, needs to be thorougly cleaned and LAPPED for magazines to drop free without any shaking of the rifle
>safety selector is sluggish and loose
>very hard to disassemble as removing the trigger group requires you to fiddle the selector around to hit just that VERY specific spot where it will slip out
>handguard is really awkward and short- either you hold it awkwardly by the handguard or around the magwell
>bolt hold open is a joke, requires the force of 1 billion suns burning the energy equivalent of a dozen giga niggers on bath salts
I rate this rifle 0/10.
It's honest to God the worst gun I have ever handled.
Having handled a Crossfire 223/12ga pump action and several Jennings pistols, this is complete and utter SHIT.
Fuck Spain.
Don't waste your money on a prebuilt or a parts kit. Buy a HK33 clone instead.
>>29446189
I kind of want to buy it and just measure all the components and see how out of spec they are
>>29446406
The entire rifle is a mess. I'm sitting with it in my hands and I'm having the worst buyer's remorse I ever had.
This trumps the time I bought a .223 rifle thinking it was 1:7 for my 69gr handloads, and turned out to be 1:12.
Changing the mag is a chore, pulling the trigger is a chore, SHOULDERING the thing is fucking depressing because it feels so awkwardly short and high.

I'm recently starting to understand AR gas systems, would it be safe to say a carbine length gas system with a 20 inch barrel would be terribly overgassed? And a mid length 11 inch barrel would be terribly undergassed?
>>29447143
That is a fair generalization.
>>29447143
I think the overgassing of the 20" carbine would be of much greater magnitude than the undergassing of the 11" middy. BCM et al sell 11.5" middys, which I assume they wouldn't do if they had serious undergas issues. Worst case would be using a lighter buffer on the middy, or a dark matter buffer on the rifle.

>>29448008
ill have to get you the actual size. does this look better?
>>29448038
Oh, and while zeroing use the small aperture. You can flip to the big one later if you prefer it that way, but the margin of error will be better for you if you zero with the small aperture.
>>29448038
This targets always great. Remember to do 3 shots at a time before adjusting, so that way you know if theres a flyer its due to human error.
>>29448057
Pretty much. I always start off with a 5 shot group to see what's up. Then I shoot 2-3 round groups after each adjustment until it's doing what I want it to.
I'm not going for a tack driver, it's a 300 and in fighting rifle, so as long as I am on the black I'm comfortable.
>>29448038
>>29448057
does it matter if I'm using am 18 inch barrel or that the sight radius is pretty long?
This thing is like an ACOG, except the eye relief isn't dogshit.
>>29448041
Yeah.
What are the lines on the trident and AR for?
>>29448086
It will probably impact your trajectory slightly, but you should still be hitting a man size target out to 300 pretty damn easy. Sight radius shouldn't matter. The only difference between the M4 and M16 for zero on that target is how many clicks you make with the rear sight.
>>29448087
Fukken neat.
>>29448086
Velocity matters a lot... Use a ballistic calculator to actually check flight path if you are going to try a two point zero... That stuff works for the army because they all use the same ammo and barrel length...

its my poor attempt at copying the real patch. i can remove them though. some patches have it and some dont
>>29448087
>>29448096
What did you do with your old scope?
>>29448128
Lost it in an incident where I tried to use my AR to put out a fire. Turns out shooting a grain silo that's aflame only makes things worse.
>>29448122
It works fine on 16" barrels and pretty much any ammo too. If you want to shoot MOA groups at extended range, it's not for you. It's designed to work for fighting rifles.
>>29448138
Was the silo filled with tannerite?
>>29448123
Ah, I see.
I hadn't looked that close at the original yet. :)
Question gang. I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on my first AR. Like many it's got the traditional front sight, but doesn't come with a rear sight at all. I'm thinking I want to start out with something reasonably nice, but I'd also like to save a buck. To that end I was thinking of picking up a fixed sight rather than a folding sight. I was looking at Troy brand sights, but am totally open to other suggestions. Any advice?
This would not be a rifle that I plan on putting any kind of magnified optic on, and any non-magnified can just be co-witnessed with fixed sights anyways, right?

>>29448205
I recommend a folding sight of some sort that way you can use it however you want. A fixed rear seems like a good idea, until you have to live with a fixed rear or replace it. 'Sides, when it's in the up position you won't know the difference.
On the cheap side you got Magpul MBUS sights, they work fine and have 2 different apertures. As well as milsurp KAC micros and Matechs.
For a bit more you have Troy, MI, and YHM. They all do basically the same thing.
>>29448209

I heard shorter barrels will worsen the reliability of the AR-15 due to the gas system. But this is for the 14.5" barrels on the M4.
Are 16" fine, or should I go for 20" if I want the best reliability?
Taken from here
>>29437564
>>29449256
It introduces higher impulse pressure which can in turn cause your rifle to beat the crap out of itself, an adjustable gas block does wonders to fix that though
Sup ARG
Some guy just sperged out on me at the local sand pit for using staples on the target board. Apparently they "rip your targets to shreds".

>>29449272
So what do bullets do to them, then?
>>29449272
wait, wut? please elaborate
>>29449272
>>29449279
no
>The problem with the M4 is that the shorter barrel necessitates moving the gas port further back which, again, leads to higher pressure and all the problems associated with it.
>>29449269
But does this apply to 16" with ordinary gas block front sight? Or is it simply just the M4 suffering from this?

>Uhhhhh...
*Dipshit McGee can either give his actual name and address, which will make what happens next occur all the more quickly, or just straight up lie and get in even more shit*
*Police file report of stolen weapon w/ serial*
*Absolutely nothing happens because the chances of the gun actually being stolen, used in a crime, and recovered are next to nothing*
*Even if it does get stolen, it's registered to the actual owner, who will file a report with the police, leaving Dipshit McGee to explain why he decided to commit a felony via filing a false police report*
It's not that hard to deduce, Anon.
Well, I ordered the MAMS.

>>29449316

I have no idea about AR's yet so I don't know if this is true or not
>>29449324
wow u talk like a bich
>>29449256
The current consensus on this is that using a carbine length gas system, which was originally designed for a military 11.5" barrel, in conjunction with a legal minimum 16" barrel leaves a longer portion of barrel where the gas isn't getting vented out while the bullet is still traveling through it. This pumps more gas into the receiver. The increased pressure this creates makes the gun cycle "harder," specifically during extraction. Theoretically, this increases wear on components (and probably felt recoil as well).
To abate this, people either suggest going down to 14.5" or going up to a mid/rifle length gas system.
Personally I don't think it's that big of a deal, especially if you're using an H buffer, so if you get a better deal on a 16" and carbine upper I'd go for it.
>>29449347
At what part does
>Lack of understanding of gun ownership documentation and filing police reports.
start being incoherent? Is it the multisyllabic words?
>>29449355
I'm the first anon. The one that didn't call you retarted. The M4s that the military/LE use are actually not that bad, any malfunctions they have are 9/10 times due to other things like shitty mags
>>29449280
>>29449286
You need to use tacks, apparently. Staples protrude a by just thousandths of an inch, and their katana-sharp edges will cause shredding of even the highest quality targets upon contact.
>>29449285
All bullets are 22 caliber or similar, and rimfire. Their low energy tiny mass causes them to simply bounce off the plywood backing while creating a small marking on the target.
By that logic, my .224 diameter bullets have 15,000 lbs of muzzle energy and create gaping holes in targets and target posts, ruining everybody elses fun.
>But seriously I just got harassed by a super-fudd

I have no idea what happened.
One day I put her and little doggo in the pic in their crates in the garage.
Well the older doggo somehow busted open her crate by pushing it open and bending it apart (she is not a huge dog, kind of like a sheltie mutt mix) She has retard strength though.
so anyway I come home from work and both doggos have escaped into the garage and so i fussed at them both for eating a bunch of boxes and tearing up my kids shoes.
I put them out in the back yard and then I had to go run an errand.
When I came back there was a hole near the fence and one dog was gone.
That was nearly two weeks ago and I haven't seen her since.

I think he was just using it because the class allowed you to qualify with any pistol you wanted regardless of caliber.
I was very tempted to use my 686 and blow my target around with every shot.
>>29445355
For lower concussion blast the blast need to be directed forward and narrow angle as possible
If angle suggested in that picture is true it wouldnt be really low concussion.
>>29449256
Not true as longe the gas port are proper size for its reasonable distamce from muzzle.
Some case shorter barrel are capable of being more reliable than longer barrel.
Say
16" carbine gassed with large gas port +red or orange coded spring from springco +h2 or h3 buffer BTFO stock 20" rifle gassed with a2 buffer system due to massive increased in action's momentum making it much harder to be stopped by carbon/gunk or foreign matter such as sand, dust, or mud.
As guy who highly value reliability and throughout researched and experiment with ar-15 gas sys. My ar is set up to be 16" with large gas port at carbin length with red coded springco and h2 my action is higher velocity and heavier than most.
>>29443823
WHY U RICHFAGS NOT WANT LIGHT USEFUL RIFLEE?
WHY ADD USELESS HEAVY BULLSHIT TO RIFLE FOR NO REASON?
>carbine length free-float tube on a 14.5" barrel with a decent COMP pinned
>BUIS are fine, worth the weight
>optic is fine, worth the weight
>light/laser is also fine
>typically foregrip/angled grip isn't
I realize with long handguards you can get a rifle length sight radius with your BUIS, but it's not worth the weight. Light-weight is utility, utility is king.
