I've noticed recently there's quite a lot of misinformation, old wives tales, and just false things floating around on /k/ about what people think it is that law enforcement does, how we train, how much we shoot, etc.

So since tonight is my night off I've got spare time and will answer any reasonable questions you guys may have about the job.

Note: Reasonable questions is exactly just that. Bait trying to start an argument will be ignored.

Pic not related, only LE picture I have on my computer though.

For most departments no, some of the big ones might require it but I don't know specifically of any that do. Having prior military experience will help you in the hiring process.
>>
>>29405089
The short answer is that it depends on the department. Some will require 60 college credits or military service, others do not. If you want to get into federal law enforcement - get a degree.
>>
>>29405089
This, I'm enlisted (in a non-LE related career field) and was thinking of applying to the local PD when I get out and go home.

>>
>>29405442
Scheduling depends on the department. I've worked for departments where you worked the same shift for a year and I've worked for ones that changed every two weeks.

State officers have it better. Higher pay, more opportunity, and the ability to geographically relocate and stay within the department.

>>29405469

>>
>>29405497
Math, sciences, engineering, finance/accounting (not general business) those are the degrees that have opportunity and earnings potential.
>>
>>29405469
yes and yes. I used to be fairly open minded, most people didn't like cops and yes some can be toolbags but that comes with the job. Most of the BLM movement is hot air and hoodrats looking to start fights and steal stuff while nobodies paying attention and get a pass for it. I think the media is way more dangerous in this regard, you want to expose dirty abusive cops go right ahead. You want to cover up some of the bad things BLM protesters are doing youre just going to encourage them. Basically stay out of ghetto, mostly black areas and you'll be fine. Which was the case before any of this started
>>
>>29405517
Would you say you aren't ever going to die in no ghetto?

>>29405442

8 on 6 off, new guys on nights, vets on days, new supervisors on nights, veteran supervisors on days.

Everyone at MSgt and above is a desk jockey.

Starting pay is something like 47k/yr before overtime. Benefits include full medical, dental, vision, and a 75% pension after 25 years with matching contributions to any 401(k)

The higher up you are the better your shifts. Detectives are kinda all over the place because you never really know when you're needed. Some work 9-5 M-F, some work way more sporadically than that.

Are you aware that LE is a fairly safe line of work? You aren't logging, diving, or machining.

It seems like "officer safety" is being abused more and more for things like:
>shooting dogs
>shooting people
>letting the people you shot bleed out instead of rendering aid - if soldiers can do it, why can't you?
>avoiding the exact neighborhoods that need more cops in them(see Oakland PD)
>going after "safe" white folk because niggas would resist or even shoot back

LEBRO, do you feel that "scenario fulfillment" is an issue with regard to investigations and assigning blame? Not talking about scenario fulfillment in shootings, just in investigations.
>>
>>29405640
I see you fell for most of the missinformation of cops on /k/.

Officer safety means doing things like not letting someone stand next to us on our gun side, not having our back turned to people, telling people to get their hands out of their pockets, pat downs, etc.

If someone is shot and bleeding out we are going to go in and save them, note the tourniquet on my duty belt in >>29405092 for specifically that reason. We also don't avoid neighborhoods that are dangerous, but we don't go in alone either. And that last "going after safe white folk" thing is just pain made up.

>>
>>29405685
>They could also stand to be reminded that they are Civilians according to the law

They are really civilians in name only. Cops are afforded all kinds of legal privileges, codified in many states' so-called "LE Bill of Rights". The judiciary has also seen fit to grant them essentially perjury get-out-of-jail cards for everything and anything.

I hardly blame cops for treating themselves as if they were a special class above the people. Legally, they are a special class unto themselves. Doesn't change the fact that they are amoral hypocrites.

It will go something like this

>PT rest
>psyche evals (~850 questions)
>stability test (~450 questions)
>polygraph
>oral board by senior supervisor
>command staff/CLEO interview
>academy

The academy will have all of your DT, LEDT, firearms and miscellaneous training. Each section will have a paper test and a practical test.

You do well on all that and congrats, you're a cop now.

At least that's how it is in Oklahoma, I don't know how it is in states where they let frat boys with guns be cops. I think in California or the NYPD they let anyone that hates freedom be a badge carrying cunt.

Emil Mataseraneau was currently shooting at people and none of the officers had the medical equipment to provide treatment on scene. Paramedics/EMT's will not go into a scene until it's deemed secure and threat free. The officer's #1 job was to neutralize the threat so the EMT's could come provide professional medical treatment. Your point is moot.

Why are LEOs such bad shots, have no range discipline (sweeping, crosslane shooting, alcohol use, yelling stupid political shit inappropriate targets), ragequits after getting a verbal warning by the RO.

kind of like this, but without the shenanigans

LE/EMS guy here. Hopefully able to share some insight on certain things about the job(s).

>>29405262
CJ degree is of variable value. If you're pursuing a future in Law Enforcement, and know you're 1) Eligible for it (No legal issues, no physical issues, not a braindead monkey)
2) Know you can do the job

Go for it. There are some stigmas with it, such as it being an INCREDIBLY career-narrowing degree, but it does open up other doors. FBI and Marshals for instance almost exclusively look for CJ in fresh agent hires. It also opens up the potential to pursue a law degree.

That being said, if you aren't 100% for LE, go for something else.

More involved with EMS than LE atm, but feel free to ask questions about either.
>>
>>29405824

You can't abuse OT.

LEOs are omitted from OSHA OT laws, so what that means is that our OT is calculated on a monthly, not a weekly basis. So in order to get any OT you have to go over your hours for the entire month.
>>
>>29405826
Are you implying that the longest gunfight in LE history did not involve the two bank robbers shooting?

>>
>>29405857

Yeah, that guys a pussy.

There's a guy I've arrested that lives on the same street. We're on a first name basis because he understands that I have a job and he was doing illegal shit.

On average I run into people I've arrested about once a month. I've had 0 incidents because pretty generally if you're not an ass they don't care.

How heroic of you. Typical cop... inflated sense of self. You're not that important. It's amazing that so many cops define themselves by their job. Shows that the on the job ego is just a facade. Fucking wimps.
>>
>>29405867
He may not have been at that point, but the scene was still not secure as they had not cleared the bank yet to find out if there's a third gunman. Again, the EMS will not, by their own policy, come in until the scene is 100% secure.

Go and stay go, dickweed.

Also, we ran over that shootout probably a dozen times in the academy, and even I can can tell you the officers on the scene wanted those guys dead, no matter the circumstances.
>>
>>29405742

Qualified immunity is the final defense that cops have when all else have failed (i.e. I committed a crime but I am shielded by immunity).

Most of the things they do are simply legal when they do it, but illegal for civilians. That protection does not even require qualified immunity. It's simply a two-tier legal system.

young adults that were kids when 9/11 happened. Believe it or not there was a time when the police were a little more laid back in a sense. After 9/11 we became more militarized (yes it did happen, whether its a good or bad thing is up to you), I see guys at airports with assault rifles, or trucks from the army being re-commissioned for SWAT and its a bug out. The problem is that a lot of these guys signing up are seeing the police as a stand in job for the army and to be tacticool operatuhs. Its has its pros and cons but im generally becoming more hateful with it

thats actually common. my parents were both cops and we had our phone number unlisted and they all were told specifically not to have pictures of their families up at their desks (detectives) so scumbags couldnt ID their family members etc.

we also had our house targeted by vandals several times because of the cop cars parked out front.

>>
>>29406013

No, I was. DO for a time.

For instance, a CDS case in my state cares 3-5 generally. At 33% in 67% good time.

A first case plea deal will generally catch a 5 year deffered sentence, which means after 5 years of probation the case is stricken from your record.

The same case the goes to trial will probably catch the full 5 years in, meaning he will spend a minimum of 20 months in prison.

I spent years dealing with these guys, shut the fuck up.

not nearly enough. Im a gun guy, ive always enjoyed shooting and I figured cops would too, but this isn't the case. even the ones who say they like guns don't go shooting all the time. Bt not a lot of people want to be cops and if we put some military grade proficieny requirements for a lot of things we'd loose a lot of people. Think for a second about how you know they're LEO's and how you don't know what the guy on the other side of you does for a living. They're shit at the range because they're show off assholes.

>>29405803
>Statistically, you're job isn't that dangerous.
I've tried to explain this before, but /k/ is generally too busy being mad to pay attention. It's a matter of environmental danger versus interpersonal danger.

The danger in logging is a big tree falling on you. The danger in The Deadliest Catch is the cold uncaring ocean. The danger for law enforcement comes directly from other people not the environment. It's from Tyrone deciding he doesn't want to be under arrest, or Steve deciding flashing lights on the side of the road mean step on the gas and hug the fog line.

Many jobs are far more likely to injure or kill workers than law enforcement, but in the vast majority of those jobs the injury or fatality is not directly connected to another person's intent to harm you. That is where the difference in perception regarding danger and risk come from.
>>
>>29406410

Lol. I struck a nerve. Yes. Keep bragging about being a puppet without a shred of freewill. This is why I own guns.

Seriously, this is not to be construed as a veiled threat of violence. It's not. At all. I understand that you don't know any better because you are brainwashed. I pity you, to an extent.

Rather, a perfect example of why it's important to exercise your rights. Because people like you will do anything they're told.
>>
>>29406439
im only 23 and I don't get kids anymore. I cant "connect: with them for shit and for that matter I know guys younger then me who feel the same. Your generation is fucking weird.

I find its its entirely circumstantial. Community policing works sometimes but if its forced then the kids back off. You have to ease into it and its better if the younger guys handle it. Most of it is just talking to them and not trying to bust their balls when theyre very Cleary retarded. Just hear them out

and this whole "kids TODAY are respectful and I just don't get them" has been happening forever, you really think cops weren't having this problem 50 years ago? theyre kids, theyre going to butt heads with authority figures for Christ sake. Some people spend their whole lives studying this and trying to define it when your grandfather could tell you all about it

>>
>>29406462
because most "un-justified" killings aren't as clean cut as the media wants to paint them as
>UNARMED BLACK TEEN SHOT FOR REACHING FOR A BROOM HANDLE? WHAT THE FUCK?
yeah, they leave out things like it was 2 AM, it was dark, he matched a description of a robber and tried to pull is out of his waste band when they stopped him. Im not saying theyer all ok, some aren't and believe it or not the cops do get in trouble for it. the media just likes to sell the news rather than tell it, getting the people riled up. Then when it makes it to court all the evidence is presented to the jury and it goes from there. It comes out as not guilty because of all the aforementioned things and CNN comes out with the next edition of "COP WALKS AFTER SHOOTING UNARMED TEEN"
TDRL don't trust the media
>>
>>29406439
I know this is a bit off-topic, but I hate this "Millenial" thing so much, and whoever came up with it is completely out of touch. I'm 30, and I find that I have much more in common with 40-50 year olds than I do with 20 year olds, and most people around my age seem to feel the same, yet somehow we get grouped in with teenagers. I really think the dividing line should be somewhere around 1994, not 1982.

>>
>>29406551

Apparently you do not understand statistics. Despite what your supervisors tell you, the reason for the danger is irrelevant. You still have less of a chance of getting injured on the job than MANY other industries. Why does the intent matter? Just like any other (barely) dangerous job, you get the equipment to mitigate the hazard (guns, taser, cuffs, etc). This is no different that safety equipment associated with other professions. Again, intent is statistically irrelevant.

>implying the media isn't pro-cop as fuck in 99% of cases

The one case that gets the nigras riled up, they suddenly switch narrative for ratings. For every other case, they literally repeat the police press release.

One example: the Kelly Thomas case. The media unquestioningly repeated all the lies the cops spewed out for months, until local outrage over a newly released video made the media change their tune.
>>
>>29406551
So a machinist should be expected to put his actual body and life on the line just for pay, but someone who works for pay AND to uphold the public good for its own sake should shirk duty whenever it might be dangerous?

You have not addressed the bit about risking your life for the sake of the public being part of the job.
>>
>>29406665
>media isn't pro-cop
the media is pro anything anymore aside from their own agenda which is getting people riled up with little information
>they literally repeat the police press release
they repeat everything when something big because they don't bother doing journalism and finding it out. Its 3 hours of "we believe the shooter has a rifle, it could be an AR 15 maybe, sources say he still on the premises and has a rifle, some people have been shot by this rifle and this rifle could be an AR 15..." on repeat and people eat it up

Again, I'm not going to stoop to your level. Think what you want. You're obviously too ignorant. Enjoy your $35k/yr.
>>
>>29406585
No the danger is perceived differently because it's directed against someone by another human being.

Even though the danger happens less frequently than, say, logging, people view the job as being dangerous, because when danger happens it happens due to deliberate action of another human being rather than shit luck in a dangerous environment. Firefighters are an exception to this, probably because fire.

Because one of those is part of the job and one of those is heroic but retarded.
>>
OP, first off, there are a bunch of LEO's on /k/. And I'm not counting the undercover ATF agents in that.

Secondly, there's been at least two LEO's fired from their job for posting shit of themselves on /k/, so you probably just fucked up big time.

>>29405262
Depends. If you want to be a cop, or work in a related feild, then its fine. I have an Associates in that, paired with a Criminology/OSHA dual major and Forestry minor Bachelors. It pretty much put me at the top of the stack for my job (Game Warden). Plus in a few years when I apply for the Forest Service, it'll do the same.
Or if I decide I want to work for a PD/Sheriff I can easily switch.

>TLDR:
Its good to mix with another degree, but not so great on its own, unless literally all you want to do is be a normal cop.

Another human being which I already perceived to be a threat ahead of time and therefore I will behave in a way to increase risk of violence, thus finishing the self-fulfilling prophecy which in turn allows me to bloviate about how dangerous this job is
