SKS ammo questions

Hello /k/, I bought an SKS recently and was wondering if you could answer a couple ammo questions.

1. What ammo brands should I avoid? The nearest shop that sells 7.62x39 only had like three brands last I looked; Norinco in grey boxes, PPU, and some other absurdly expensive brand.

2. Is it cheaper to buy ammo in bulk online and eat the high shipping, or to buy it in person, buying a couple boxes as I need them? The aforementioned store sells 20rd boxes for around $12 a box.

Much appreciated!
>>
>>29300787
Buy in bulk online, always steel, from ammoseek.

Cntrl f. "Free"
Find free shipping that equates to near the top round/per cent.
>>
>>29300787
Have you considered reloading?
>>
>>29300807
Generally I end up being too poor to afford the reloading rigs. Plus I don't think I shoot enough to justify it.

Canada?

It depends on your usage really. Personally I buy online and eat the shipping (or use sites like that offer free shipping) if you shop around you can find a good prices, plus there's no pressure to buy something you dont want simply because its all thats on the shelf.

This pressure also comes into play when you go the method of "buy ammo as you need it" as opposed to buying in bulk. For us AK guys where your $12 isnt even a full mag, it just feels stupid to walk in a store because you wanna go to the range and say "alright, I'd like 4 boxes please, heres my $50" because that's the only way to dump 2 mags.

Its much more enjoyable to already have a bulk of ammo at home, where you can simply load up your mags and head off on your merry way.

Still recommend reloading though... Theres just an unimaginable bond you form with your raifu when the food she eats is hand crafted by yours truly. Its almost like every shot has an echo that says "mmm, thank you master"

But maybe i just watch too much porn.
>>
>>29300807
All the brass ive found for 7.62×39 is berdan primed. You found boxer?
>>
>>29300937
>"Maybe"
>>
>>29300937
Thanks for the good info.

Now, as I shop around for ammunition, what are brands I should avoid? Is stuff like Wolf and TulAmmo okay or not? Suggestions for good brands and brands to stay away from? I'm not against cleaning my gun so if it's a tad dirty I don't mind, I just don't want to shoot anything that'll hurt it in the long term.

Shooting at all is enough to justify it. The rigs are obviously the steepest part of it all, but once you're in your in. And honestly, you'd consequently shoot more if it only cost you a few cents per round. Not to mentiom youd have more accurate, cleaner, higher quality ammunition that you can ivest your pride in.

It will pay for itself over time, guaranteed. Plus when the world falls apart and we stop importing the ammo/theres some. Sort of ban or stoppage that causes the lroce to soar, youll still be chillin at tour bench cranking them out at a few cents per round as if it never happened.

>>29300967
Hey, not my fault you neglect your guns.. My marriage is healthy because i only cheat on my wife with my raifu's.

>>29301018
This is hard because I dont habe an SKS, and while my AK's are hungry little sluts, I cant speak for your SKS.. She might be more ladylike.

Dont be afraid of corrosive surplus, its good shit. just make sure you take care of her afterwards. Other good ones:
>GOLDEN TIGER
>Bear
>higher end red army stuff
>Barnaul
>Ulyanovsk

Wolf and tula are sketchy in terms of accuracy and consistency, if that doesn't matter to you then there's no reason not to buy them. Plenty of anons swear by the stuff.

>>29300958
My lsg carries it, but Did you try googling "7.62x39 boxer brass"?
>>
>>29300958
Brass is typically boxer primed, steel being usually berdan primed.

You can still reload the berdan primed steel. With a syringe you can pop the spent primer out. Berdan primers cost the same as boxers and all your other reloading equipment is the same.
>>
>>29301182
He's right, one thing he left out which only matters when loadjng for accuracy is that berdan primed rounds are inherently inconsistent due the way the energy is distributed through the two holes.
>>
Middle of the road plinking ammo go with any of the Bears. Tiger or Yugo M67 for your SHTF stockpile. Personally, I avoid Tula like the plague.
>>
>>29301166
8 links down in google. I found 100 once fired boxer brass for $33 + shipping.
Sportsmans guide is selling "boxer" ficcoci ammo. $550 for 1k.

So it exists, but is expensive as fuck?
>>
>>29301182
Thats one thing ive never had any interest in at all. Reloading berdan primed cases. Fuck that.

This problem i have with finding boxer primed ×39 is THE driving force compelling me to build an AR.
>>
>>29301018
I've put a thousand rounds of Wolf Polyformance through my SKS no problem, but if you can try to get Golden Tiger.

I would also suggest getting an SKS/AK sight adjusting tool. I picked up a cheap NC Star one but had to file it down on a corner to fit under the sight hood properly.

Also, get some stripper clips for easier reloading when you go innawoods!

I'm not touching anything but golden tiger, shoots great through both of my 762 guns.
>>29300787
>Bear/Barnaul
I had some disgusting accuracy issues through my vz58 with that stuff, never tried it in my sks. Imagine how infuriating it is to be trying to sight in a scope with ammo that hits wherever the hell it feels like. Switched back to GT and was done quick.
Anything but GT is just mud busting ammo IMO.
>>
>>29301284
The tapco sight tool is the only one i bought that worked. Its already got tye slants to go around the hood.
>>
>>29300787
I personally don't avoid any brands, though I will say that Wolf and Tula are pretty shitty. I almost always order online and get Golden Tiger, if not that then Wolf Polyformance. Wolf also has a new line out that tries to replicate Russian military ammo. Not sure what the verdict is there, but it is not boat-tail ammo like GT is. You'll save money ordering online and also have more to pick from. Local stores and gunshows are almost always overpriced by like 30+$ a case. Only buy here and there if you want to supplement your stash, never to actually build one.

Back to ammo types: Wolf and Tula are shit because they are dirty and inconsistent. Certain Wolf lines are decent, though, while some are shitter tier like Tula. I still use them, but I don't prefer them. The reality is that none of the ammo will blow your gun up or destroy pieces of it or whatever, so use whatever fits your budget. The only problem I've ever had with ammo came from shooting hollow points out of an AK. They jammed every now and then, but it was only ever on that one particular gun and none of the others.
>>
>>29301217
I guess so. like I said i buy mine at the lgs for a flat rate of $120 per 1k. If they have 200-500 he just sells me of it for $50

That ammk you mentioned is also good stuff. Plus you get the cases, sk theres an added bonus. Laying $550 for a thousand rounds hurts my brai. To think of though

>>29301288
This is funny to read. Makes me appreciate my baby even more knowing how well she puts out in comparison
>>
>>29301200
What caused you to avoid Tula if you don't mind me asking?
>>
>>29301026
It's a D so it takes AK mags.
>>
>>29301352
Yep, my vz hated that stuff. And it's not a century job either.
Bear beat the shit out of my gun too, knocked back the bolt super hard. GT just ejects gently while bear casings went damn far.
>>
>>29301284
It's a D model so it takes AK mags. (cited wrong post in other reply)
>>
I buy golden tiger in bulk from sgammo.com.
Just bought another 1k rounds for $235 plus $28 shipping and handling.
After about 500 rounds of golden tiger though my sam7 I have yet to have one f2f, although I put 1k tulammo rounds through it before that with the same results.
>>
>>29301359
Not him (hope you dont mind) but tula is notoriously shit ammo. You dont buy it because you want to, you buy it because its affordable and theres most likely some on the shelf, because everyones bought everything else. It's Inconsistent, innacurate, dirty shit ammo. Its not gonna wreck your rifle or anything, but it's just not preferable.

>>29301380
What makes the vz so picky? I thought they were heavily based off the AK platform..
>>
OP here, thanks all for the info /k/omrades, everything I learned here will be a great help to me.
>>
>>29301166
>sluts
>s
H-how many of them are in your arsenal, anon?
>>
>>29301429
Pretty much. I know people who have shot thousands of rounds of Tula without issue but I've also seen more FTE, light primer strikes, and squibs with Tula than with any other brand. Hell, I don't think I've ever had problems with any other brand.

It's just dirty, unreliable bottom of the barrel ammo.
>>
It's a fucking sks, just feed it Wolf or Tula and clean it afterwards with hot water and solvent
>>
>>29301429
>>29301465

Thanks for the headsup.

I'll probably end up buying some Golden Tiger next time I get paid, as that seems to have the best reviews.
>>
>>29301429
>What makes the vz so picky?
Don't know. I mean, it wasn't THAT bad, but I noticed easily through a scope. Using irons alone, I might not have known any better I guess.
>I thought they were heavily based off the AK platform..
Not even remotely close in any way, other than sharing caliber and similar style of iron sights.

You literally cant go wrong with GT. But like i said, try some of the other stuff. Corrosive milsurp is pretty smooth accurate stuff, and wont fuck up your gun as long as you wash it out afterwards. Ik some people who dont do so, and only wash it after every 500rds or so.. But i couldnt imagine treating my girls like that.

It's just the closest canadians can get to an ak in caliber and function. I actually consider it better than aks for a few reasons, but aks in general are my favorite overall rifle to collect.
Here's some ak/vz/sks parts for reference. As you can see, they're not alike in the least. The vz is striker fired and a different gas system altogether among other things like stripper clip speed loading and having BHO built into the design, so it's very different.

OP here, I've been inspired to show my SKS.

Here's my girl. Got her at an auction for $250 minus the mag and since I was after an SKS for years I cheaped out and got a Tapco 10rd mag for it just to get it in firing condition. Also went for Norinco ammo just to have something to run through it. I actually hope to shoot it for the first time this afternoon.

Shes nice anon, ive seen some really mutilated SKS's go for a lot more. Get her a proper magazine to make her feel at home down the road, and you're golden.

How'd you like the norinco ammo? Also do you have any plans for her? Personally i think she'd be gorgeous with a polished bolt, heat shield like pic related, a quality stock refinishing and maybe even a bayonet, but thats probably crossing the line lol

Idk, she's yours to treat, i think the most important thing is that you get some rounds through her and really get to know each other a bit better before you worry about any of that. You might just find that she's fine just the way she is.

I'm cautious about it. I haven't shot it yet but my hopes aren't too high. For reasons I'm not willing to discuss I haven't shot anything in years and my trigger finger is itchy as hell. Point being I basically need to fucking shoot something and after I got the gun itself I got hasty just for the sake of tossing some rounds downrange for once.

When I have more expendable income I'll get GT ammo and decent AK mags (it's a D model so it came out of the factory made to take those). As far as improvements, I don't think I'll make any. The stock has got a couple nicks and scratches, but I'm not too bothered by that. If I'm feeling particularly plush in the future I might have the stock redone, but beyond that I probably won't go for anything unless I feel it needs it.

Who knows, I'm 19 and this is the first gun I've bought for myself, so right now I'm just happy to have the damn thing. Might change my mind on improvements later down the line.

This is probably for the best anon. I'd still screen cap my suggestions just in case you get around to wanting to dress her up down the road. Theyre not hard and look great together. Great choice for a first buy all in all.

Also the stock refinishing can be done yourself if you're comfortable with it. I did all of maya's work in my shed, some find her a bit obnoxious but I wouldn't change her for anything. I got Sage and kind of realized I was at that point youre at with her.. Sometimes, rifle really is fine.

>>
>>29302866
Yeah, Winchester is absolute shit for the 7.62.. I forgot all about that. Literally bought a box one time, took it to the range, and ended up giving the box to the guy next to me after 10rds

Looked up reviews and everyone reported my exact issues

I don't know a damn thing about redoing stocks but I could probably learn I suppose. I'd be too nervous about fucking it up though, I'd rather take it to someone reputable that I'd trust to do it for me.
>>
>>29302866
For years I never had an issue with Tula until I bought a couple hundred rounds at a gun show and something like 30% were either FTE, FTF, a couple of hang fires, and finally a squib that sent my SKS to the gunsmith. I consider it worth it to spend the extra couple of cents more per round for Wolf or Bear.

That's some old ass ammo. Could be fine, could be questionable. That's the gamble with old milsurp.
>>
>>29301488
Why the fuck would you clean it with hot water? There isn't any corrosive 7.62x39 unless you look for really old ammo. Modern production Wolf, Tula, etc are all non corrosive.

This, I won't even let water get near my rifle with corrosive ammo.
It's too hard to displace it 100%, only times I've had trouble is when I used water.

I use steaming hot water from my basement sink with a little hose and nozzle to flush out my bolt action surplus after shooting them with corrosive, but that's it. I would rather pay for modern ammo than clean out a semi-auto though.

>>29303207
You realize there's no benefit of water temperature right? I mean it may work faster but in the end it does the same shit normal water does.

with winchester, it wasn't just the 7.62x39. It is everything I have used (.380, 9mm, 32-20, .32 S&WL, 7.62x39, 7.62x54r, 12 GA, .22 LR, .22 WMR, .38 sp/.357 mag,.40 S&W [which would not even feed in my sig sp 2340].) Their brass specs are all over the place, some rims wouldn't even fit in my shell holder while others were sloppy. their 32-20 brass is absolute garbage. and their .38 spl cases are thinner than shit. Then you have their 12 Ga, which you might be able to get 1 reload out of it. and I emphasis on the might.

Back with their 7.62x39, the few boxes I did buy years ago; well the accuracy was piss poor only to find out, they used .308 bullets instead of .3105.

Got damn anon. Im sorry you had to pay for that knowledge, but thanks for being charitable with it.

Only Winchester shit i used was the Winchester PDX1 12gauge shot & slug combo. Love it, never had a problem with it, keep it in my ithaca for home defense.

I live In a pleasant spot nestled between plush green mountains and the great basin desert.. Sleep with windows open and don't lock my door at night. Its heaven on earth until you wake up to a coyote walking into your bedroom. Only happened once, tried to scare him off by shouting and swinging my gun at him cause i dont generally like killing the little guys, but all he did was snarl and lunge at me so i had to.

Sorry, i rant a rant a lot lol, My point is that the PDX1 shells suit my needs more than buckshot or a rifle when it comes to home defense. The closest neighbor i have is 6 miles away according to google earth, for some reason i dont consider people a threat. But even so, im sure they'd work pretty good on people too.
