I haven't held one, but to me it looks more comfortable than most of the metal folders we see on the AK. Is it just that it looks more like a Galil stock, or...?

I've currently been enjoying my SLR105. While 5.45 is a cool round, the only cost effective option for buying ammo is in bulk online.

If I were to jump ship, would you recommend going to 7.62 or 5.56? 5.56 would be nice as I could consolidate rifle calibers.

I had a WASR before and 7.62 wasn't too shabby itself, I just much prefer the 5.45/5.56 aesthetic

hey guys going to an auction tomorrow and they have a WASR. How easy is it for someone who has never field stripped an AK before to field strip an AK having only watched videos? I would hate to get the thing apart and not be able to get it back together.
>>
>>29303436
Common mistakes people make field stripping an AK for the first time after being shown how but having no first hand experience:
>make sure when putting the top cover back on that the front lip of the top cover is in its little groove in the rear sight base before pushing down
>make sure the bolt is all the forward before putting the BCG back in the receiver
>when you put the BCG back in the receiver, you have to start from the back. There are cutouts in the receiver rails where the bolt carrier and bolt slip in. But it won't just fall in, the hammer pushes it up, so you'll have to push down to get the BCG into the slots, then forward
>when putting the top cover back on, make sure to keep applying forward pressure to keep the front of the top cover in its slot, then push straight down, while continuing to apply forward pressure

I'm probably opening a big fucking can of worms here, but what are the advantages of a milled receiver vs. a stamped receiver?
>>
>>29303656

It all depends on your POU

for sustained fire to suppress multiple active shooters, as a sheepdog, to allow civillians to escape, a milled would serve you better. But for long neighboorhod patrols or recruiting station guarding duty, the lighter stamped receiver would be better.

Silly question: has anyone ever made an AK stock with a German/HK style sling loop in the side?
>>
>>29303656
>what are the advantages of a milled receiver vs. a stamped receiver?

For an end-user? None. I mean, the milled receiver is marginally stronger, but in a way that's not going to matter to 100% of the people in threads like this one. The only thing YOU'RE gonna notice is that it's heavier for no advantage as long as it's well-made.

For a manufacturer? There's a lot more that could go wrong trying to turn sheet metal into a decent AK vs milling out a receiver.

Literally no military force on the planet fucks with milled receivers unless they're irregulars with OG AK-47s. The only reason they're a thing is the USSR couldn't get their shit together enough to manufacture consistent stamped AKs right out of the gate. If your manufacturing infrastructure is shit-tier you're gonna be able to make a milled gun better than a stamped one. It's why the C39v2 is a better gun than the RAS-47 (though they're both still shit-tier) for example.

Back in the day, when you had a 95% chance of your AK being a piece of shit if you lived in the US, the milled guns were a better gamble than the stamped.

And that's how fuddlore is born.
>>
>>29304206

>>
>>29304711
It dissolves in room temperature water and you can flake it off with your fingernail.

Or at least that's the impression I had from the internet before I ever owned one. It's a decently good paint-over-park AK finish, which is pretty much what you get with an AK direct from Kazanlak or Izhmash. It's a step above a Wasr where you just have a park job, but two steps below a glock where you can store it in your fishtank and still not worry about rust.
>>
>>29304711

>>29305687

Can't argue with that, I stand corrected.

Milled receivers are still shit, though. I stand by that.
>>
>>29305961
I wouldn't say they are shit.

Smoother action, recoil impulse, more rigid, more durable. The milled guns last longer and machine gun rental ranges, however it's the trunnions that go first, typically.

There are downsides of course. Drop down stock, weight (7-8oz), balance.

I have a milled Chinese gun that is an absolute joy to shoot. Feels "correct" in a way that can't easily be described. I had a milled Bulgarian that I sold..

DDI vs. Definitive Arms vs. Arsenal for a first time AK buyer. I'm looking for an AK of the 7.62 variety, I have read good things about all three brands, but I would like to buy the cheapest of the three that has comparable levels of quality.

Some commercial shooting range owner from Las Vegas noted that milled receivers last longer than stamped. But they do also break in the end. You can find the article online somewhere.

Milled guns are heavier. Spontaneously, I'd say they weight about the same as Chinese stamped AK's who use thicker steel.
>>
>>29309019
I'm working on getting into building guns (built 2 ARs, next is an FAL, then hopefully AKs). I've seen RPK-74 barrel assembly's online before, for like $500... could get a VEPR 5.45 and swap the barrel.

As a faggot that has never owned or handled/fired a real-life AK before, I find myself wondering...
Are they really as inaccurate, yet reliable as everyone makes it out to be?
>>
>>29309064
No and no. Just like ARs aren't jamomatic tack drivers. ARs from what I understand have more inherent accuracy due to the design but the difference is minimal. IMO, the biggest difference comes in the precision of the sights themselves; the leaf sight on an AK kinda sucks a lot while the aperture sight on an M16 is pretty great
>>
>>29309076
I have seen pictures of the iron sights, as well as used them in vidya games, and I will admit that the M16's is superior by far. I knew already that the M4/AR was more accurate by design, but I see a lot of people, and media, bashing the AK for just being inaccurate in general. At the same time, I see it being represented as the workhorse of all workhorses, being dragged through mud and still firing/cycling, even through a fucking twinkie and a ham sandwich.

I'm thinking of getting an AK in 5.56 for a HD rifle since I'm afraid of my 7.62 underfolder over penetrating. I just have a few questions I think akg can help me with. Can a 5.56 AK fire .223 like a milspec AR can? What country of origin or manufacturers should I avoid or really try to find? Hope everyone's having a good weekend
>>
>>29310164
I am wondering how reliable 5.56mm AKs are with different types of ammunition.

I've seen, for example, some impressive-looking tests of 5.56mm ammo with the new 62gr Nosler bonded-jacket, flat-nose softpoint. It's got an awful lot of exposed lead up front and a very wide, flat point. In a modern AR we've got the extended "M4 feed ramps" to help out with ammo like this. Do AKs in 5.56mm tolerate this kind of thing or are they strictly for hardball and maybe match-type hollowpoint bullets that have no exposed lead?
>>
>>29303554
anyone know where this is from?
>>
>>29308874
I never knew how much I needed this before now. Maybe even in something like .50 AE so the ballistics would be comparable. Finding a barrel would be impossible, and the amount of dosh spent to make all of the unicorn components needed... fuck it would be expensive but holy hell that would be a cool gun.

Good morning /k/.
>>
>>29309044
Range in question was running semi-auto rifles converted to full-auto, mag dumping all day erry day until the guns broke.

Not at all reflective of real-world usage.
>>
>>29309064
>>29309113

Few things going on with this fuddlore:

Original M16s in Vietnam were issued with out-of-spec ammo and no cleaning kits, and soldiers were told "lol don't worry about it." It's never been able to shake this rep

AKs will tend to be very reliable simply because of the long-stroke piston design. There's a LOT of weight coming backwards with each cycle and it allows the gun to overcome a lot of shit that would shut down other guns.

HOWEVER having that much weight moving back and forth with each shot also means recoil is heavier than it probably needs to be and the gun is flexing a lot, inherently reducing accuracy.

This isn't helped by the fact that the AK has a reputation for being inaccurate. If you're shooting one and it's not grouping tight, you're more likely to simply assume it's supposed to be that way because "lol AKs are inaccurate" rather than actually sight the gun in properly and get it where it could be.

Also ARs are a more sealed system than AKs are, which makes them technically more reliable in certain conditions (the mudtest every ARfag likes to cite, for instance), but it's pretty rare that those conditions are reflective of real-world conditions, and additionally ARs tend to be harder to get back on track than an AK will be once you're dealing with failures.

Also the perceived gap in accuracy has a lot to do with ballistics. A 5.45x39 AK is going to look a lot more similar than a 7.62x39 AK when compared to a 5.56x45 AR.

TL;DR it's all fuddlore, a gun's reputation is a self-fulfilling prophecy. ARs are more reliable and AKs are more accurate than they're made out to be

>It's by century

Century doesn't make WASRs. They import them and modify them to accept double-stack magazines.

lolno

TONS of militaries issue AK-variant weapons bro.

From there the older surplus filters down to lower-tier allies, militias etc.

Like how you'll see soldiers in Central American countries with M16s that look like they went through 20 years of service in the States before filtering down to where they are now.

For the most part, there are countries that produce newer milled ak's with those "Angled Stokes" but otherwise are the same as AKM's in most ways. It's also fairly un-wise to identify an AK by it's furniture if it's not an under-folder. The best way is either the Muzzle Break or The magazine.

>>29313004
That has nothing to do with the length of the rail sections. Some are hollowed out a little more on the insides to fit over the shotgun Saiga barrels.

yeah this is before I started taking it apart.

Just having trouble getting the bolt back in. Probably not using enough force. Previously noguns

Did you insert the bolt correctly into the carrier?
>>
>>29314078
>Previously noguns
Shocking.

Do you mean the assembled bolt carrier or are you having trouble getting the bolt into the carrier?

If it's the latter, stick the skinny end in an rotate it until it's where it needs to be.

If it's the former, start at the back where the gaps in the rails are. You're gonna need to use a little force because the hammer will push the BCG back up. Just get it level with the receiver rails and move it forward and you're good.
>>
>>29314114
>>29314026
>>29314131

I went out and tried it again. Turns out I was just not pressing hard enough to slide the bolt forward. I'm used to working with electronics so it feels wrong to apply such force to something.

Thanks guys.

>You're gonna need to use a little force because the hammer will push the BCG back up.

I just realized that being an Europoor, with my current AK being a milsurp Arsenal 74, I would have absolutely no clue how to disassemble a civilian AK trigger group. All I've ever handled are F/A military AKMs and AK74s. Especially those fucky "shepherd's hooks" and pin retaining plates look bumfuckingly tricky to me.
>>
>>29314167
And with shepherd's hook I refer to those wonky aftermarket ones for semi-auto trigger groups.

On my AKs the auto sear holds the hammer down until the BCG is pushed fully into battery = no/very little resistance from the hammer when inserting it after cleaning.
>>
>>29314167
????

I'm specifically referring to the fact that the cocked hammer contacts the bottom surface of the BCG slightly when it's in the rear position. Especially on newer AKs it can take a little pressure to get things where they need to be.

>>29314175
I guess I didn't realize they were that different.
>>
>>29314149
You have to push down first, and then it will slide forward easily. Make sure he bolt is properly in the carrier, and all the way forward, then starting from the rear, push it down and then slide forward.

I forget who said it, but I remember reading a quote about operating AK rifles.

>You can 'talk' to your AK, just remember that it only knows Russian

I take this to mean that one should not be afraid to beat on the gun. They like being handled roughly. That's what they are made for.

When I was trying to install my Balkan furniture on my WASR, I had to stop for a moment when I realized I actually needed a hammer to install the buttstock.

That's funny, everyone who sees it keeps drawing that connection.

I want to replace it with a black or plum poly set but man, the AK Plus grip and +1" stock are more comfy than the standard.
Being 180cm/5'11" with fairly large hands the original stock's LOP and grip's size are just babby tier small.

So I went to a funshow this afternoon and got a cheap US Army surplus olive drab gas mask bag, with the intent of using it to carry spare mags.

Pluses: it's really big. I think you could get 8-9 30 round AKM mags in it, maybe 10. It appears fairly well constructed. OD is less inappropriate for my location than UCP (UCP matches nothing on earth but is said to be a good match for moon rocks, however right now I don't think bugging out to the moon is a realistic SHTF plan)

Minuses: no matter how I try to arrange the straps it appears it can only be carried with the open end down or to the side, neither of which is acceptable for a bag holding 8+ very heavy loaded steel AKM mags, from which I would presumably be trying to retrieve them one at a time, possibly while under attack by zombies..

tl;dr what does /akg/ use to carry spare mags in the field? I am trying to keep everything as simple as possible and especially trying to avoid plate carriers, "tactical vests," ninja black combat webbing, and other paramilitary-looking gear as I expect that, come SHTF, such gear, practical and tactical and HSLD though it may be, is also likely to carry certain implications about the wearer, who is likely to convince all who see him, just by wearing it, that either he's on Team Cheeki Breeki, come to steal everyone's daughters and rape their chickens, or else is from Team We're from the Government and We're Here to Help Ourselves to You, who will, come that day, probably not be held in much higher esteem by the people.

So, do y'all just carry spare mags around in your pockets, or...?

Pic related. I use either depending on where I am. My belt is reserved for public ranges and my family's farm, the big vest is for when I'm up innawoods at my cabin

If you want a larger bag to carry mags with (fucking why tho?) look for a "Russian Bread Bag". I have one that I store my Czech M10 mask in along with other innawoods shit. I could see holding atleast 4 mags in each of the two internal compartments. It does not come with a shoulder strap or anything, though, just two belt loops.

If you want, I can take photos of mine.

>yes please, and thanks.

I under-estimated the capacity, and the options. It's got two D-Rings on the back if you wanted to sling it. The flap is held shut by some rings and straps. There's also another strap and ring on the inside for reasons I can only guess at. The front of the bag has two small pockets, each large enough for an AK 'pill' cleaning kit. Inside, there's four small pockets with button-snap enclosures, slightly bigger than the first two. The smaller of the two cells can fit four or five AK mags, and the larger one has room for eight, as even my seven were flopping around inside.

If I were looking for a bag to mate with an AK, and only an AK, I think it's not a bad idea. IIRC I paid around $12 for this thing. Also the belt straps might look flimsy, but once it's on they actually hold pretty tightly. I used to use it as a dump pouch.

>>
>>29317340
>>29317393
You can't just unscrew it and adding threadlocker is a bad idea

AK gas pistons are intentionally loose and slightly wobbly. There should be a small amount of play. To keep it from coming unscrewed it's riveted in place. That's what the two circular areas are at the end of the bolt carrier. There's a rivet that holds it in which is then ground down flush with the bolt carrier so that it doesn't snag.

What might have happened is that it was tight from the factory but after shooting it/handling it the gas piston came slightly loose (as it should be)
>>
>>29317458
>adding threadlocker is a bad idea

Why?
>>
>>29317486
First of all it's totally redundant because the gas piston rivet holds the gas piston in with no need for any thread locker. It'll never come loose unless somehow the gas piston is torqued so hard that the rivet shears. But also because threadlocker would do its job, and lock the threads. You don't want that, you want it to have a little wobble. It helps prevent the bolt carrier group from binding up in the cycling operation. A good AK bolt carrier is going to have a slight gap where those threads meet, and a little wobble to the piston.
