Volvo V70 '01 in commie red.
A tank of a car even if the offroad capabilitys are a bit questionable.

Not an ideal SHTF vehicle, ill probably just take a Bv 206 from the Homeguard if I ever end up in such a scenario

'98 Buick LeSabre.

Been looking at diesel vehicles for SHTF driving. What are some good ones? It seems like a lot of the vehicles I want are gasoline only.

I want to be able to power my car with biodiesel in SHTF scenario. How hard is it to homebrew ethanol? Doesn't ethanol have an issue with starting in cold weather?
>>
>>29294104

>it's another ideal SHTF vehicle thread

best vehicle by far is a dirtbike since if roads get fucked up it'll have the easiest time through them

runner up is a jeep wrangler, after that diesel trucks with camper shells

dont make biodiesel, it will fuck up your engine even with mods, just filter used motor oil from cars to .02 microns and mix with 7% gasoline
>>

Time to go full actually on you

Ethanol cannot be distilled purer than ~95%, unless you as a chemical to the water to lower it's evaporation point. Typically benzene is used (in industrial applications). This also makes the alcohol undrinkable, since benzene poisoning ain't nothing to fuck with.

Biodiesel is pretty shit offgrid, but wood gas is actually decent both for electric cogeneration and transportation. A light dedicated 4WD can do pretty well.

Anyone got any experience with the Suzuki side kick? I wanna get it cause from what I've read it's really good at off roading for its type of model and it's also fairly compact (live in a city). for almost every car out there, there is a dedicated forum where owners help each other with mods/repairs/etc. find one of those and start browsing. you should be able to get a good feel for what kind of issues are common with the car.

Perfect lift height, not overly douche-y tires or rims, and the trim isn't over done.
9/10, would yee-haw in.

I have a 2001 Chevy 2500HD, long cab long bed 4x4. She has taken me everywhere I wanted to go, a few places I didn't want to, and one time she took me through the promised land (Texas)
Bought it off of my dad who was the original owner, but now he wants to buy it back. Should I take his money and put it towards a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Exended Cab Short Bed 4WD? Is that an improvement?

Volkswagen/Bombardier Iltis. Very basic vehicle, but fun as hell to drive for some reason. Will run you from $5-16k, depending on the condition, $16k-ish being showroom. We even threw TOW on them at one time. They're noted for their ability to go literally anywhere, even being capable of being sealed up and floated, so long as you don't try and rock crawl with it.

I don't drive because I've never needed to, but I do have a '97 4runner which is a pretty good shtf vehicle. Maybe not the best but it keeps a low profile while maintaining decent off road capabilities, mpg, and it's a Toyota so if it ever does break down, parts are fucking everywhere. The leather seats are nice too.

hey roger posting from my thinkpad e530c

as you may or may not know i enjoy the finer things in life, from computing to food/wine to vehicles. even tho S wont be hitting the F for at least the next 8 years of america being great again i understand why for the purposes of discussion u enjoy talking about vehicle capability discussion - a discussion worth discussing - and vehicles are weapons too (u can run people over)

but i also enjoy being a manly man, and 2 be honest with you i can feel my pluno splanctic ganglean (it's in your rectum [that's youre asshole]) sinch up when i see you people driving around in volvos and jettas and (jesus christ) Saabs. i mean seriously the only people who should drive those things are old trustfunder hippies with walking poles who go 5 mph too slow and CONSTANTLY talk about how EXPRESSIVE there gay little montessori kids are oh my god i can't stand them, or by extension you. like seriously please tell me your driving your saab to a homopathic clinic to get pickled carrot shakes because its gonna help your gut bacteria fight cancer you get from ur oven (you read it on alternet and posted it to facebook and then put just the names of people below it who also drive saabs and volvos and jetts big coincidence :(

ANYWAY i drive a toyota land cruiser. a harmonius blend represnting how good i am at being a hardworker and also a manly vehicle that can offroad with the best of 'em. leather interior, 2 locking diffs, v8 smooth like butter, transmission from a weird japanese shuttle bus that moves groups of tiny japanese people? check, check, check, checkmate. it is also a pretty good SHTF vehicle because one thing people dont often think about with SHTF is how there will be lots of dead saab drivers and too many horny women looking for men to please themn, and they will want someone with a fine luxury vehicle, not some ratty ford ranger mountain dew drinking hobo which is about the best of the rest after the saabs get kebab'd

>Pic unrelated
ironically, it's one of the best pics of the vehicles in this thread.

Because a decent blacksmith could probably fashion most any part on the thing out of scrap metal and it could drive on wooden wheels.

The real choice for SHTF vehicle is parts, repair and fuel.

What do you do when you need new tires, obscure engine parts and some status led is blinking morse code at you to say what's wrong?
>>
>>29299842
>what are bridges?
You just drive carefully, one tire between the rails, one tire one foot off the rails.

The real advantage is that cruising on rails, you're not gonna blow a tire. Tires are life in the apocalypse.

It's so useful to just get into a car, turn on the heat if it's cold, or just dodge the rain for a while as you take a break. And you don't have to pitch a tent everytime you want to get out of the rain.

I had one. they are very under-powered but have tons of torque. Since they weight nothing, its not too bad a set-up.

If you can deal with even less space, the Samurai is far more capable. Its resale value is stupid-high because of that though. Its also probably the shortest wheel-base for any 4x4, so off-roading is amazing... but day-to-day driving is awful.

Remember that the Chevy tracker is a rebranded side kick, and far more common in the later years(though its uglier imo) so you might have more luck finding it than a sidekick.

lel. But If you’re a fat fuck when the SHTF, you’re going to be dead soon anyway.

But a normal healthy person on a bicycle can run a horse into the ground and do so silently while carry substantially more gear, plus you can pick it up and carry it up stairs or just toss one in the back of your 4X4, etc.

If you're not crawling or trying to fit down ATV/dirtbike trails what the hell does wheelbase have to do with it?
>bull bars
Uh...they're every-fucking-where. At least here in the midwest. Probably 1 in 10 trucks TOTAL has one.
>snorkels
There's nothing fordable here and it never gets dusty, the only things I see with snorkels are Sahara-edition Wranglers (with street tires for dem urban cowboys) and memetic FJ's. You either have a tiny assed stream that doesn't require a snorkel, or it's 30 feet deep. There's nothing in the middle.
>winches
Also everywhere. Especially due to the high number of farm trucks and the fact you can get mediocre 12k winches for around $120 at any of the farm supply stores or like $90 at the ag co-ops.
>spots
Every once in a while I'll see an actual offroad-specific Cherokee, but most of the ones I see around here are OEM's on things like the Sahara Wranglers and the F350 SuperDuty KingRanchDeluxeCab longbed duallies (again with street tires because they're used to pull motorcyle trailers and RV's)

I don't understand all these "mandatory" features that'll never get used outside of sub-Saharan Africa or Baja. Build your vehicle to what you expect to see, not some online bucket list.

>>
>>29317053
As a follow-on:

In snow and most types of mud a longer wheel base and heavier overall vehicle is actually a good thing. Harder to get stuck and easier to get unstuck.

In most offroad conditions a higher-torque, higher-HP engine is a good thing.

Actually having a PTO (most American diesels) to run all kinds of shit on instead of relying on electric motors is a good thing.

Having the extra storage space of a large SUV or fullsize pickup with a top or tonneau means they're usable for more than *just* offroading. Or *just* offroading for multiple days or with multiple people in one vehicle.

That might be part of it.

Also, I had a '97 Dakota SLT and was quite happy with it. Drove it for a decade and had no problems what so ever (well, other than the muffler rusting out, but it was 13 years old at that point so really surprised it lasted that long).

>If you're not crawling or trying to fit down ATV/dirtbike trails what the hell does wheelbase have to do with it?
We're very clearly talking about 4WDing.
If you consider a dirt road to be "offroading" then you pretty much epitomise the American truck-owner mindset.
If your truck gets stuck going over speedbumps, you probably won't be able to climb a decent hill.

Pic related is what people mean when they talk about offroading, not your pampered princess shit.

In Australia if you don't have a bullbar, snorkel, winch and some spots you just aren't capable of going out innabush.
>>
>>29317386
>in Australia
I will never be driving in Australia. I have no use for a snorkel because, as I said, everything is either 6" deep or 20' deep.

An American fullsize truck could straddle that little wallow. Also that assclown has plenty of room to drive around it, he's going through it for fun.

You're just being a smarmy cunt now.
