Dum myself a 7 foot hole with plans for expension. Then I realized that I live on the coast and digging any deeper and I will drown. What this guy said, sinkholes are definitely something to be concerned with. A spring that just fucked off and stopped flowing? Could be a sinkhole waiting for something to disturb the structural integrity of the rock dome (that episode of the simpsons with the sinkhole wasn't entirely inaccurate in its formation), could be someone tapped the aquifer elsewhere and drained it, regardless, you might want to brush up on legit engineering if you try to set up shop down there and look into what kinds of bracing you might need to prevent a collapse, or at least mitigate a worst case scenario and be able to get out if it all goes tits up.

I'm only halfway through my soil science class but it sounds like his soil is almost solid rock with very little structure and shifts a lot depending on dryness. So if he even managed to dig through and make a support structure, the water would collapse the ceiling and make everything move around so much the supports would collapse.
>>
>>29280890
Super basic soil test would be to get a bit of your dirt and some water. Rub it between your fingers.
Feels super slick--mostly clay, very decent structure for holding together tunnels.
Feels super gritty, doesn't hold together well--mostly sandy, not very good for not collapsing.
also you should google "mason jar soil test"

well, they do look relatively safe. kinda like the granite tunnels we have in my local metro stations

cool fact, the largest mine here had an underground mushroom farm experiment made by the government. don't know if it was meant for keeping the workers underground until they got to old to work or if they wanted to start some kind of underground society or make forts/castles self sufficient on food in times of war.

There are a whole lot of small, young pine trees (6-10cm diameter) and similarly sized eucalyptus trees. The area is a plantation left to go feral and then half-arsedly designated as a nature reserve. Locals walk their dogs and jog on the closest bit on the roads, but deeper in there are very few people around. A few hobos sleep in the bush and some assholes dump stuff near the edges but there are overgrown parts where hundreds of young trees have grown around large trees, too dense to move through without clearing a path. The area is quite hilly, with a steep sided small valley. I was thinking i could find a densely grown patch against a slope, cut my way in and then tunnel in horizontally using local timber for supports. Create a short tunnel i could relax in while innawoods. Furnish it with shit i find lying around the area (things ive found scattered over the area include an old steamer trunk, a small bean bag-like seat, and a really fucked up couch that could maybe be put back into working order.)

Maybe even widen out the tunnel into a large chamber.
>>
>>29280735
So the long form of it is the soil in the area I would dig does the following things:

When it dries up it likes to make big cracks in the ground in something. Generally speaking each section of the grid of dirt is rougly 12 inches across with an inch between each bit.

It's also rather shallow, I haven't actually done core samples, but I'd assume the deepest areas are maybe 3 to 4 feet of soil before hitting either a gravel pack, or sandstone or shale.

Oddly enough, despite the high amounts of sandstone, it's mostly a clay/silt mix in the soil.

I have some pictures at home from an exploration me and a couple of buddies did of an abandoned WWII era molybdenum mine. It was a really interesting exploration, and there were a lot of side passages. We didn't map out the whole thing.

It was pretty sketchy though. There were a lot of really, really weird mineral growths on the walls of various colors. There was 4-18 inches of water covering the floor wherever you walked and it was totally opaque, making it impossible to see what you were putting your feet on. The surface had this ~1" thick crust on it that actually made it look like solid ground until you tried to put weight on it.

We found evidence of an old explosives storage room with some dupont paperwork still present, as well as a larger room with an old elevator shaft. There were 13 levels marked on the pegboard next to it. We must have been on maybe the third level down, because it went both directions. Exploring downward would be impossible due to it being flooded. The upper levels we have yet to explore because the only two ways up were either the shaft, or a ramped area that at one time had cart tracks. We tried to scale there but our rope broke so we called it a day.

There was also a blocked off tunnel with three crossed carved into the wall, as well as names and a date from 1914. Pretty sketchy.

If I remember, I'll post all the pics in thread when I get home from work.

Oh, a little more on those weird deposits. There were black, yellow, and blue crystalline deposits growing on walls in various parts of the cave. We chipped some off for samples.

The blue deposits were the strangest. They were translucent and aquamarine in color. They could be chipped off the walls and were pretty solid, but would crumble under say, a boot. We tried to wash one sample off and whatever it was is water soluble because it started to melt. Another sample that we left outside in the sun turned bright white and disintegrated into a powder.

So, who knows how much damage was done to our nervous systems through whatever nasty shit we absorbed through our skin from wading through the water.

Finally, we're planning on going back to both finish the exploration of this mine as well as investigate some other mines that are nearby in the area. We're trying to be a little safer about it, so I'm planning on bringing one of these with me.

It's a multi-gas monitor that I have from my days working in oilfield well development. It's mostly for monitoring H2S gas, as well as atmospheric combustibility, but I figured because it monitors at least O2, CO, H2S it would be a decent indicator for air safety. What other hazardous atmospheric conditions can exist in old mines that this wouldn't detect?

Thanks for the tips on the monitor. Here's those photos I promised.

First, the access point as seen from the top of the hill the mine is built into. You can see where we're parked, and the bridge we had to walk across to get to the entrance. You can't see it great in this photo, but that small ravine is no less than 40 feet deep. The road was over 15 miles of un-maintained dirt road.

>>29284244

You can also see in that first photo some stone retaining walls for the road going up the hill. There are a number of foundation remnants or stone piles around the area from the structures that once stood. We looked up the history and apparently there was a small "town" here to support the mining operations. If I remember by numbers correctly it was like 300 people at peak.

Here's the bridge itself. Off to a promising start as you can see.

Now we're getting into the meat of it. This tunnel wound back into the mountain for quite awhile. It turned a little one way or another, and went down / up a bit, but was mostly straight.

There were a few short offshoots that we passed, but none of them went far until we got fairly deep. Water covering the whole floor. In one place, it seemed like there was a shaft going down, but invisible because of the opaque water. We fortunately found it by probing ahead with a spear one of our group was carrying, and were able to skirt the edge of the tunnel to get by it.

I would have shit my pants had someone fallen in.

May be toxic to the kidneys and liver after repeated exposure. Generally though it's just an irritant to the skin and eyes.

Also the crystals grow fairly fast given a high enough concentration in solution.. so since it took over 70 years to get to that point, it can't be too high of a concentrate. It won't turn you sterile though.

Where I live people monitor oxygen (normal air 20.9%) and set the alarm to trigger when it gets to 19.5% if that matters.
>>
>>29286139
Yeah, thats how ours work, it alarms out on low o2, 13ppm h2s, and i'm not sure about CO and lel, i'm aboit to clock out so i dont feel like bump testing it with everyone in the office to see the limits for those

As I said, thin soil, mostly silt and clay, haven't really done a proper horizon though. It also would depend on where on the property I am to, canyon's a flood plain and a couple shovels in and I hit cobble usually, and the upper areas are just thin dirt.

How the fuck did they even get air down there?

I understand physics will displace the CO2 and Air will come in, but at a certain point you are going to lose enough oxygen in the air and asphyxiate, no?

Why arent captive bolt weapons more common? Sure they arent powerful but they're damn near silent. Is it the ATF fucking with innovation, or isn't there much use for them?

A+ kamerade. Good shit
>>
>>29289214
Why? Except for ammunition availability, carrying a small revolver that fires essentially silent captive bolt ammo for killing sentries seems a lot easier than a .22 with a large suppressor that'll be a lot louder. Also stabby weapons suck ass for quiet killing compared to both types of quiet shooty weapons.

Concrete sales person here. Water will always get through a concrete slab. There are cementicious scrub coats that are advertised to be water proof (until they crack), but they need to be applied to the outside of the wall. If they are applied to the interior surface of the wall the water will saturate the small pores in the slab and eventually spall out the membrane.

People building concrete water tanks coat the interior with Ardex. If you coated the exterior of a bunker you might be OK. You'd still want a pump.

Ask a concrete solutions person anything.
>>
>>29289835
Someone mentioned something about earthcrete and using fly ash earlier, do you know anything about that?
>>
>>29289853
It would probably work structurally. You'd still have issues with water. The only way to keep water out of a sub grade concrete structure is drainage. Lots of gravel and possibly a pump.
>>
>>29289853
geotechnical engineer here

earthcrete is mixing some type of stabilizing agent such as lime, cement, fly-ash, or a combination of them into soil to improve the strength. For expansive clay soils, lime will also reduce the expansive potential of clays.

Cement is best for sands and silts. Lime is best for clay (and is better at reducing expansive potential of clay), but doesn't gain as much strength. Fly ash is best for sands and silts as well, but will still add strength when mixed with clay.

The more material you mix in, the stronger soilcrete you get. Typical addition rates vary from 3 to 10% by dry soil weight. You can also add aggregates, such as crushed stone or gravel for additional strength.

After you mix it, you can form it and place it to make walls and stuff. I had a client who built a few houses using the stuff.

Nice! Seeing as fly ash is a waste product (and lime isn't exactly hard to get ahold of either) it shouldn't be too hard to get enough to form some decent supports
>>
>>29290081
Take the proper precautions when mixing these additives. They're caustic and they generate a lot of heat as they cure (especially quicklime; use a lime slurry if possible). Be sure to add enough water to allow the pozzalans to hydrate properly.

Its Bosnia, I have been fallowing the story and it seams like they are going to rent the place out to some Arab for a hotel. I also think that there are nuclear shelters for sale in Croatia. Tito had a thing for digging deep and now no one needs all the bunkers he dug plus no one can afford the maintenance. The one I mentioned ARK Konjic costs like 10,000 Euros a month in maintenance.

huh, i met a few dudes who work in Tenerife exploring the lava tubes when I was doing a volcanology fieldtrip. Dudes spend their entire careers exploring natures tunnels unaground looking for unexplored tunnels, new ecosystems and other more exotic lava types. The rule of thumb waws if you could get your helmet through the hole you're going in. Fucking crazy though you stand on top of one and stamp your foot and it sounds hollow, like hitting drywall. One of them an old lady fell through 100 years ago with a herd of goats, 16 metre drop. No one even knew they were there until then if i recall. Might be able to post some pics of what they look like from the top but none from unnaground as I was using a camera phone and it only picked up the dark

Does anyone here have experience with 1-man tunneling rigs? I've seen these used in the Coober Pedy opal mines (predominantly working through sandstone) and I can't help but wonder if it could be useful to excavate thicker clay-based soil.
