Is this a thing?

I want to get started in reloading and I'm a little overwhelmed by everything I don't know. Is this a good price and kit to start? https://www.midwayusa.com/product/423081/lee-challenger-breech-lock-single-stage-press-anniversary-kit

If I get the above kit, I need a die set, a manual, brass, powder and bullets?

Anyone know any good books or manuals? Complete guides for noobs online? Most guides I see seem to be pushing products.

Reloading general then. . .

Nope

Why? Is this better? http://www.sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore.com/products2.cfm/ID/165028/9365/rcbs-rock-chucker-supreme-basic-101-kit

Are die sets interchangeable across brands?
>>
OP, what are you trying to reload?

I have the lee anniversary kit and picked up a rcbs electronic powder measure. I use the Lyman manual. It pretty much has most of the stuff I need recipe wise.

For now, Mostly 300 aac and .223
9mm and .380 once I have a setup but not my main focus.

I'm just complete stupid when it comes to reloading and I don't know anyone who does it

If you go the single stage route reloading is going to be painfully slow. I maybe get 50 rounds per hour reloading pistol calibers (45acp/44mag)

If you want to reload rifle. Youll need a case length gauge for each caliber you want to shoot

Whats your budget? Maybe you can upgrade to a progressive press to churn out more rounds

For the rifle calibers are you reloading match ammo or trying to save some $$?
>>

Thanks.

Not sure of budget, the rock chucker is at the top end of it, especially because I need to buy the dies and consumables too.

Interested in reloading to save and as hobby, don't really care about match

You will also need a tumbler and media (walnut or corn cob, which you can pick up at petsmart. I recommend walnut for rifle brass) to clean your brass.

If you have the funds, buy your primers and powders online in bulk if you dont have a local place to buy it inexpensively.Right now cabelas has S&B primers for $20 per 1K. If you wait for them to do a $5/free shipping all you have to pay extra is the $20 haz mat fee.

I currently use H335 for .223 plinking rounds and I get that for about $25/lb

cost per round break down ( assuming you pick up your brass and scavenge what other people leave behind)
.02 primer
.09 powder at a 24gr charge of H335
.09 for Hornandy 55gr

You get a quality round for 20 cents.

Hope this helps!

.20 per round isn't really much savings over the cheap budget ammo I get. Even less if I have to buy brass
>>
Just go ahead and get a wet Tumbling setup and some stainless steel media.

No dust. Less mess. Super shiny brass.

Any thoughts on this?

Die sets are interchangeable. So are shell holders.

I have loaded literally thousands of rounds in various rifle and pistol calibers on a lee anniversary kit with zero lee equipment-induced problems.

I really only had 2 problems- whenmi started reloading, I wasn't resizing my rifle rounds correctly and got a few stuck in the breach. Lesson learned: pay attention to the resizing die alignment and ram the cartridge all the way.

The other issue was innusing some RCBS dies for .45. The rounds were often the wrong size even after careful and deliberate setup according to the instructions. After many failures to feed, I bought a set of lee dies for .45 and have not have a single issue since. Lesson learned: more expensive doesn't always mean better or more reliable.

For cleaning brass, i have also used sugar free kool-aid. The citric acid removes the corrosion and carbon very well, and you can reuse it until it gets moldy.

I put the brass in a mesh bag to make it easy to get in and out of the bath, rinse in hot water. Air dry overnight on a towel.

Makes the brass clean inside and out, but not shiny.

I used a lee classic turret for thousands of rounds and only had one problem ever: one not properly lubed got stuck in my die.
>>
I think I'm going to with the Lee's anniversary kit. I would do their Deluxe Turret kit but that seems to only be good for handgun rounds, correct?

Besides the kit and dies, I need a case length gauge and trimmer, primers, powder, and brass then I'm good to go?
>>

>>29158248
This is easily one of my favorite reloading tools http://www.amazon.com/Lyman-7832215-E-Zee-Case-Gauge/dp/B000N8N344

You'll want a crimper for your semi autos, a universal decapper, and then a method to clean your brass.
Here's what I use
http://m.harborfreight.com/dual-drum-rotary-rock-tumbler-67632.html?utm_referrer=direct%2Fnot%20provided
http://www.buffaloarms.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=164066
1/3 pins 1/3 brass 1/3 water and then some dish soap in each drum
>>
>>29159769

If you are going lee, which is fine, spring for the classic turret over the deluxe. It is way better.
>>
>>29158035
I like all of my Lee equipment except the powder thrower, it's somewhat inaccurate
