Thinking about getting an Arsenal Slr 104 in the next few months.

Any anons own them? Anything I should know before I buy? What's the future of 5.45 availability look like?

Not my first rifle but would be my first AK
>>
>>29067130
>What's the future of 5.45 availability look like?
Surplus is banned, but commercial 5.45 is equal to or cheaper than 7.62x39. Academy also sells it in boxes of 30, which really satisfies my autism
>>
>>29067130
I had an SLR107 (5.56) and it was a great rifle.

Quick look shows PPR (Price Per Round) for 5.56, 5.45 and x39 are all about the same right now on Ammoseek for the cheapest stuff.

Get it in the caliber you want. I got 5.56 because I wanted ammo commonality. If I weren't so picky I'd have got 5.45. I did hear after the fact the 107s can have FTE issues but that never happened to me. They also don't make 107s anymore, but that shouldn't matter too much: they use a lot of 104/74 parts.
>>
>>29067218
No you have a SLR106 not a 107.
The SLR106 has been known to have feeding issues do to the straightness of 5.56x45mm

SLR 104-5.45x39
SLR 106-5.56x45
SLR 107-7.62x39
>>
>>29067130
I own an SGL31 which is also an Arsenal.
>Anything I should know before I buy
Good quality mags cost $30 and make sure to inspect the ak thorougly just like any other ak.
>What's the future of 5.45 availability look like?
Just as doomed as 7.62x39 is when it got import banned.
>>
Literally bought a 104 2 days ago waiting for it to get here
>it's killing me
>>
What's the best 5.45 ammo? Seems like it would be golden tiger.

How bout wolf vs Tula?
>>
>>29067130

If you already have a carbine in 5.56 (not disputing any bullets performance, the reality is 5.56 is easier to find state-side), then go for it.

Less muzzle climb than 7.62x39, and less drop at 300 yards with a 200y zero.
>>
I don't want to be that guy but if you're strapped for cash and want a 556 go for an AR.
Frankly 5.45 is more fun to me to shoot and I'm really bummed I got into guns right after the 2014 import bullshit. I'd have stacked 10s of crates if I could.

I can't promise you that 5.45 will always be around but goddamn I love shooting it so much that I don't really regret my SLR104. If you want a 762 AK for a little cheaper DDI has a pretty good reputation.
As far as the SLR106 reputation for problems. That seems to have faded from the early models so they might be good to go these days.
>>
>>29067485
>7n6
>golden tiger (good luck finding it)
>silver bear

For self defence loads, hornady makes v max 5.45 which is pretty cheap.
>>
>>29067424

> 7.62x39 and 5.45xx39
> Doomed

Hornady continues to make steel-cased, polymer tipped cartridges in both calibers. Silver Bear and Wolf both continue to import as well.
>>
>>29067512
what is sarcasm
>>
>>29067424

>Import banned

Since when
>>
>>29067519
Since the 1990's, thanks to Olympic arms. You see most the surplus 7.62x39 is "armor piercing" & since Olympic decided to make a ar pistol chambered in it the ATF dropped the ban hammer.
>>
>>29067519
Since 1994 you fucking millennial
>>
>>29067601

oh surplus. yeah I knew that, at least new production is cheap

>>29067604

being an oldfag getting assblasted on an outdated inuit scrimshaw forum
>>
>>29067638
Well that's what the guy was getting at, yes the stupidly cheap surplus may be banned, but it's still a popular caliber with plenty of cheap new production to fill the voild.

Also im >>29067601 & im a millianial. millianials 1982-2004

>>29067604 kindly fuck off.

>>29067733
See >>29067601
>>
>>29067733
Sorry you mean 5.45, same thig happened but it was a polish company for a ak pistol.
>>
Why nto a converted saiga? The fuck is the point in buying a "top of the line" AK when their prices are bullshit for a weapon that doesn't function for that price?

No AK is a precision weapon system. none, they aren't designed like that. You should get a converted saiga and dump the money into superior internals or ammo.
>>
>>29067849
This, you can get a saiga for less than 700 and its not gonna be much worse than an Arsenal, if there is any difference at all.
>>
>>29067895
Get the SLR, don't listen to saigaplebs.

>Why nto a converted saiga?

Oh boy let's see here. I'll school you since you don't seem to know what you're talking about.
>sidefolder that costs $100 and another $200 to properly install
>ak74 muzzle brake that costs $70
>oh wait, you need to thread the barrel too
>gas block that costs another $60
>new handguards and pistol grip $50
>add a non folder, $90 for the whole thing
>add time and labor into converting it, if you can even do it properly
>end up with a stupid frankengun that you spent all this time putting together just to save ~$40 or so

>superior "internals"

Like what? An akt? Big whoop you fucking moron.
>>
>>29067907
I've had every "top line" AK in my hands and I will never recommend one as a "first rifle".

I found having a cheap saiga or vepr was a better option in reality. Better price for the same package, or you can pick out what ever parts you want.

>>29067919
You suck at shopping for parts clearly.
>>
>>29067907
>Paying 1000 dollaridoos for an AK
>ever
There would be no difference between the two.
>>
>>29067945
I've owned VEPRs and Saigas and sold them all in favor of the Arsenal. Having them in your hands and owning and shooting them are vastly different.
>>29067947
>no difference
Only to someone that doesn't know.
>>
>>29067130
Did Arsenal discontinue the SGL? I don't seven see any retailers or distibutors carry the SGL anymore, it's only the SLR.
>>
>>29067986
For a starter AK I am saying a vepr/saiga is a better option due to price.

Next time go to nuggetfest.
>>
>>29068010
Yes, thank to the Jew sanctions against Russia.
>>
>>29068028
No it's not, thats dependent on what the user wants. Also price also isn't the only determining factor especially when you're recommending a VEPR, many of which need to be converted which is another couple hundred on top of the cost of the rifle. Anything I can shoot at nuggetfest I've either already shot or can shoot and don't have the interest to.
>>
>>29067986
Then name the difference between an Arsenal and a Saiga. All guns are going to shoot more accurately than the actual shooter unless its some shitty 100 dollar bargain bin gun.

Best combat rifle I've ever shot, and ive shot just about every one available in the US, short of rare special snowflakes.

5.45 7n6 can still be had, although its way overpriced. Buy yourself a spam can and sit on it for the happening.
Silver bear is like $6 for 30 rounds. Great practice ammo.
Keep in mind good magazines (IE circle 10/21) are getting rare and more expensive. Expect to pay at least $30 a pop
>>
>>29068067
I mentioned it so we coulda had fun, not exposed to new shit.

You are still missing the point entirely of the argument. I don't care whats a "better" rifle. I don't care about anything but price. At the end of the day a vepr/saiga costs less for a rifle that in the shooters hands will be equal in precision.

END OF RINE.
>>
Should I just get a 5.56 AK since I already have an AR?
>>
>>29068075
saigas arent parked
>>
>>29068101
Up to you. I personally wouldnt. Some people have great luck with them, but enough people have feeding/extraction/ejection issues that I would shy away from it.
>>
>>29067130
I've been saving up myself. At least until my fat tax return comes.

But as for 5.45 I think we are passed it's prime. I should have bought a 5.45 rifle a while ago but I was more of an AR fag. I remember when 5.45 spam cans were less than 200 each. Now you're lucky to find a spam can that isn't 300.

I did just buy 3 orders of 750 rounds of wolf ammo on sportsman guide for 200 each and brown bear can have them for cheaper.
>>
>>29068075>>29068104
Saigas are primed and painted Arsenal AD is parked and then painted. Also SGLs don't include the grip reinforcement plate as far as i know. There are other differences, those being the biggest.
>>29068092
Cheaper =/= better, especially for a new shooter, i know the argument your trying to make
>>29068101
I would get something different just for some variation.
>>
>>29067945
>You suck at shopping for parts clearly.
>proceeds to buy cheap shit like a tapco brake, non heat shielded handguards and bargain bin furniture
>>29068032
It was before that, way before that
>>
>>29068210
He clearly doesn't have an AK nor does slight differences matter. Start with a cheaper one and sell it if you want a better one. AK quality starts to shine to better shooters while somebody less experienced with them wouldn't know the difference.

>>29068221
Stop assuming shit, its making you look even more autistic.
>>
>>29068245
Please do tell what parts you would use and link to prices.
>>
>>29068292
Ye' mums anus.
>>
>>29068245
>Stop assuming shit, its making you look even more autistic.
>assumes a converted saiga is on the same level as an slr104fr
>>
>>29068331

>the whole argument was price points for somebody new to AKs

Stop embarassing yourself you child. The grownups are talking, shoo.
>>
>>29067257
Oops, I always get them confused...

And I HAD it, got rid of it. Mine had worked fine though. Just needed the money and I wasn't shooting it anymore.
>>
>>29067130
I bought a 107 a couple of weeks ago. They're pretty nice. The only shitty thing about them is their finish, but I'm not going to let it bother me too much--I may get it cerakoted at some point.

I'd get a 104, too, if I could.
>>
>>29068472

nice. I was thinking of going the 762 route but 545 seems more fun to shoot

Get one

5.45 a best, 104FR a best, triangle folder a best
>>

Well, in 7.62, Tula is as shitty as it gets.

Also Wolf is made in both Tula and Barnaul. Barnaul Wolf is good. Tula Wolf is Tula.
>>
>>29068101
my dream is for someone to make a reliable AK in 5.56 that takes STANAG mags.

>mfw you can just double down on 5.56 and mags

oh, well. plenty of options of rifles in 5.56 with STANAG mags.

but dat AK doe...
