Get both. I have a Glock 19. I have too many other things to buy right now before getting yet another handgun, once I knock that stuff out of the way, I'm picking up a Glock 17.

If you only want one, and you don't plan to CC it go full frame. Unless you have manlet hands, a full frame is better for anything competition and HD. Same reason "combat pistols" aren't compacts

That's your opinion. The Glock 19 with the large backstrap melts in my hand and I shoot it well and it's reliable. I can't ask for much more. I'm not even much of a Glockfag but I do appreciate it for what it is, a workhorse.

It's pretty damn small for a compact that holds 15 rounds. It's easier to carry than my PPQ was and I don't mind the trigger.

If I wasn't going to carry concealed and didn't mind the extra weight, my go to would be my P226, but I still think that the Glock 19 is the best do it all gun when you don't require special snowflake grips and triggers or appearances.

I've never liked an M&P trigger, not that the stock glock trigger is exceptional but it has a more palpable breaking point IMO. They also have that dumb caution rollmark and even M&P people call the grips a deodorant stick, its not a glock maymay.

I get it, not everyone likes Glocks. That's okay. I'm a Sig fanboy, but even I find myself wanting a M&P in addition to my Glock 19. I had a PPQ and had problems with it. I don't care about the VP9 and the XD. So if I decided to buy another compact or full sized striker gun, it'd be between another Glock, M&P, P320 or FNS.

Meh, my local gun shop will do it for free. It's only $130 for the Trijicons there so no real difference between buying them brick and mortar vs online.

The one nice thing I'll say about my PPQ was it was beyond simple to swap on the night sights myself.

I wish Glock offered night sights as a factory option though. I would have paid more for them.

Is it the best in appearance? No. Is it the best trigger? No. Is it the best grip? Well that's subjective. Is it a god damn work horse that fills every role really damn well? Yeah.

Get the 19, the 17 is useless. If you want a full size get the 34. Get both, carry the 19 and compete with the 34. The 19 grip is perfect for me, so I might chop the 34 frame, we shall see.
