>>
For a 12 year COIN operation, sure. Thats kinda moot though, because they were created to fight a "hot" cold war. Its like spending the better part of 50 years building a stock car in your garage and then getting upset that it under performs when you enter it in the WRC.
>>
>>28471901
I thought were were transitioning these out?
>>
>>28471901

Back in 2004 I rode a soft skin all the way from Baghdad to An Najaf with just me and a fuckface SFC who thought he was a Top

>>
>>28471901
They are good general purpose and light movement vehicles.

They are fuckawful at being armored vehicles. The underside isn't built with the assumption of getting hit with IEDs. The 1114, 1151, and various other FRAG-phase kits make them suck. The armor is all bolted on steel meaning it is incredibly heavy while still only being mildly useful. The weight destroys the suspension and makes them difficult to drive up even mild slopes, forget about real off-roading. The interiors become extremely cramped and the doors aren't hydraulic, so getting out is a pain. Armored turrets on top take up even more room inside and make the whole package even heavier.

An armored humvee is a real shitshow. MaxxPros aren't great but are a straight step up when you want a medium armored vehicle still able to go off-road. MATVs are better, and stuff like JERRVs and Buffalos make for great heavier convoy vehicles.

>>28472337
They were designed as jeep replacements as utility and light movement vehicles. They work well for that, and the US still uses similar vehicles in roles when it needs light movement. They were never intended to be APCs. Actually most soft skin humvees I've been in didn't even bother attaching doors at all, in case you needed to bail out or do some real gangster shit with your rifle.

>>28472164
They are. It is extremely uncommon to see these used by the US in a deployed area. Almost everybody uses some form of purpose built armored vehicle.

They still get used in garrison a bit as utility trucks.

I never understood the line of thought behind that. It's massive, costs a lot more that a M151, and isn't actually very spacious or powerful. Why don't use (a new version of the) jeep and light trucks instead ?
>>
>>28472526
That was the replacement they went with. It was the "new jeep". You can nitpick and say why not this or that, but there is always going to be a trade off made.

It's somewhat modular, easy to repair, wide for a good center of gravity and it works well in a non-armored role.

The BEOD configuration had a decent amount of carry space, and any more than that and you move up to using a trailer or 5-ton.
>>
>>28471942

Yea because fighting soviet light tanks in humvees is going to turn out well, right?
>>
>>28472464
In my area there's a small NG depot, nothing but unarmored humvees and some sort of heavier truck. They've literally never been moved in the 23 years I've lived here, far as I've heard it. Obviously that's not literally true, but yeah.
>>
>>28472526
Because the military wants to buy stuff from military contractors at "military quality", and 10 times the price

They should have just bought a commercial jeep or light truck.
Certainly the Humvee should not be going to war, there needs to be tracked armored supply vehicles.

These things were built as a multi-mission replacement to the CUCV with actual combat capabilities. How they were used and the environment with which they operated in were the problem. Truck is fine.
>>
>>28472677
Using a truck with a pintle mounted gun as a ride to a good vehicle orp prior to dismounted movement does not a combat vehicle make. If there's any threat of contact on the route, you'd best believe the boys are walking.

You are totally correct the humvee was designed to frontally engage Soviet afv. It was actually designed as a response to the Soviet t72. Although a little lighter armored, it had good mobility and the firepower of a spindle mounted m2 50 Cal made up for it.

I don't think these humvees are any good for traversing any temperate climate forests. They are kinda wide. It would be limited to forest roads while russian BMD's and MTLB's would have the freedom to mow down smaller trees while in forest.

USA needs smaller cars against russia.

Terrible armored cars. No visual awareness for the driver. High center of gravity, especially with the turret.

I was down, only doenside was the our new most fuel effecient vehicle for me to drive to work was now ny truck getting 14mpg, hers getting a staggering 8-9mpg.

>>
I drove one once, it was fun...lol.
>>
>>28471901

They break constantly. Like, a frightening amount. If a civilian F-150 doesn't make it to 150,000 miles with an occasional oil change then suddenly Ford is the shitties truck company to ever shit out a truck. If a HMMWV makes it a month without something breaking, its nearly a miracle. But for some reason its acceptable to have an entire MOS dedicated to fixing wheeled vehicles and they can barely keep units at 100 percent.

They are exceptionally uncomfortable. The soft sided ones have shitty seats which are little more than a thin pad on a sheet of metal, the engine makes the passenger compartment into an oven, and in the cold there is no insulation and the heating can barely unfog a window let alone keep a person warm. The armored ones are alright, but a base model bare bones Ford Ranger from 1990 is more spacious and comfortable. On caveat, if the air conditioner breaks you will cook to death in an uparmored HMMWV.

They are incredibly loud, like, you are supposed to wear ear protection in the truck. Its a good thing these arent used in combat situations in which commands have to be relayed vocally (that was sarcasm, you have to yell to be heard)

IED resistance aside, which isn't great, they are just the shittiest trucks ever.

How does the military get all its equipment to places like Iraq and Afghanistan? Do they take it by plane or boat to the country it needs to get to? And are vehicles then driven to whatever base they need to be at, or are they flown in?

Forgive my ignorance, sempais
>>
>>28474497
980 metric tons here.
I drive boats.
>>
>>28475109
Depends. During an invasion you're probably driving it in, maybe airdropping the lighter stuff. It comes from the nearest friendly base (in a Middle East invasion, that's Turkey, Kuwait, or UAE) that it has been flown into by plane. Smaller gear is all packed into shipping containers also taken by plane.

In an established place like Afghanistan or Iraq, it's flown in on big planes to the major airfields and then driven or flatbedded out to smaller posts.

Humvees and other lighter vehicles can be slingloaded to helicopters for relatively short distances, but they don't like dongling that in combat areas because it makes the helicopter very vulnerable. I have seen Chinooks slingloaded in stuff like generators, but they did it when there was the protection of more Apaches in the sky than sky.

I spent most of a 2006 Iraq deployment in an 1151.
The crew space stops smallarms fine, but the engine is unarmored, so bullets through the radiator gonna fuck it up.

It got the job done. We were usually inside towns so IEDs weren't a problem - large blast mines weren't used by insurgents and EFPs would tear through heavier armor anyway.

They were faster than MRAPs, less rollover risk, and didn't get caught on the wires hanging everywhere.

I wouldn't want to drive logpacks in one tho. That's asking for it.

TL:DR on Chicken tax

Yuropoor could get chicken shipped from 'Merica way cheaper than grown locally. Governments feared farms would go out of business then could only get chicken from the U.S. So they imposed a tariff to make the prices even or higher to save local farmers.

U.S. farmers pissed but LBJ didn't want to start a tradewar over something stupid, so he picked the most illogical thing to tax at the time --Volkswagen transporter-based pickups. Thus all trucks coming in the US now have a 25% tax.

The drivers seat on a soft sided HMMWV has a spring system, they are ALRIGHT. The passenger seat is literally on top.of the battery compartment, a thin seat on top of the battery compartment.

I drove an HMMWV for two hours on rough shit terrain at 10 miles an hour, we needed to bring the E-7 sitting in the passenger seat to the rear lines for treatment die to the severe back pain he suffered from the ride.

A bare bones Ford Ranger, the cheapest one ever sold, would be better than and HMMWV ever sold and cost a fraction the price.
